Quickie Clean Up: the Bedroom
I am finding this last Quickie Clean Up in our series on Spring Cleaning to be the hardest. As much as we would all like to have a Better Homes and Gardens bedroom, the ugly truth is, most of us have bedrooms that are filled with dust, clutter and unmade beds! For me the bedroom becomes a catch-all room, for laundry that hasn't been put away, books that I intend to read, shoes that were kicked off at the last moment for a different pair and I won't even get started on my husbands piles. However, in my heart of hearts I would love to have a bedroom free of dust and clutter. So for the sake of keeping the theme I will give it a try.
1. Make the bed. Either make it or strip it, if it is in need of changing. Depending on your anatomy some of you (or your spouses) may sweat more than others. If that is the case I would try to change the bedding once a week, but every two weeks is doable if you are "cleaner". Once again, I must be honest. I only get to it about once a month!
2. Dust the ceiling. Grab up those cobwebs that have been hanging around and shake them outside or vacuum them up.
3. Deal with clutter on your dressers, night stands, book cases and any other furniture that tends to become a drop off spot for who knows what.
4. Dust the dressers, night stands and so on, and don't forget to dust the things you are going to put back onto the furniture. For instance if you have jewelry organizers on your dresser, dust those. If you have a stack of books you are putting back onto your night stand dust those and the lamp as well that stands on the stand.
5. Begin dealing with the laundry. Clean laundry needs to be put away.
6. Put all dirty clothes and bedding into the hamper or in the dirty laundry basket to be taken to your laundry room.
7. Figure out your clutter "demons". For me it is shoes. I have no idea why I have 20 pairs of shoes on the floor by my dresser. For my hubby is is clothes. He wears many of his clothes more than one day. He is a professor so he doesn't work up much of a sweat. But instead of hanging his clothes back up, he throws them on the floor or drapes them on his dresser, since he figures he will wear them again. Believe me ladies, it took a long time for me to let this go, but for the sake of our marriage and my sanity, I had to. So in dealing with the clutter demons put things where they belong. Shoes in the closet, clothing hung up, folded and put away, or thrown in the laundry.
8. Pick up anything else that is cluttering up the floor and put it away or throw it away.
9. Vacuum or dust (if you have hardwood floors).
10. Shake out any throw rugs or extra pillows. Replace these after they have been shaken outside. Now you are done.
i know, it sounds so easy, but it is very hard to keep things clean and organized. Life seems to be on a hectic pace for most of us and it isn't slowing down. Some of you work 60 or more hours a week. Some of you have adult children still under your roof. There are things we have to let go. I really wish I was Wonder Woman, but I know I can't fit into her uniform, as much as my husband would like me to try.
So if you can only get your bed made and put the laundry away, at least do that much. If your have a few days to do some needed deep cleaning, do that, but don't stress over the thin (or thick) film of dust that is covering things. Your state of mind, and your family are more important than having a perfectly clean home.
