Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2021 - New York Palette: Adobe, Rhodonite and Olive Branch

Due to my illness, I have neglected this little blog for a few weeks. While we are still trying to get all symptoms under control and actually find diagnoses for said symptoms, I hope to be able to get back to some semblance of regular posting, so please bear with me. To all of you who have been so supportive and loving on Facebook and Instagram, thank you. Your kind words, thoughts and prayers have been so appreciated.

The last two colors on the New York Palette for the Pantone Autumn/Winter series are my favorites. Adobe is certainly what I expect on a fall color palette and Rhodonite is a completely different blue, that I think works fabulously for the fall season. Once again, I am using Olive Branch as my classic color. As I have mentioned before, olive works well with so many other colors, and makes the transition from one season to another, smooth and seamless.

These thrifted Michael Kors jeans might be just a smidge lighter than Adobe, but I think they work quite well. I know the world is saying skinny jeans are not in right now, but I like my skinnies and I will continue to wear them. Sure I will wear other silhouettes as well, but I especially favor skinnies in the cool weather to wear with boots.

The dark blue tunic top, is an older Christopher and Banks piece. After I put the outfit together, I realized the tunic is less like the Rhodonite color, while the bluish purple in the print of the jacket is a closer fit.

My jacket is a thrifted Christopher and Banks piece. It fits similarly to a jean jacket and the print is perfect for bringing on all the fall feels.

My thrifted olive bag is Fossil brand. This is a great piece if you want something you can throw all sorts of things into. Ha, ha. A hobo bag is a good choice for travel, as it easily fits into many different spaces and yet has plenty of room for all the goodies.

You can see in the previous two pictures, I kept my jewelry simple by adding a few olive bracelets and a string of olive beads.

You’ve seen numerous pairs of SO ankle boots on the blog, because I have them in SO many different colors. Ha, ha. See what I did there? These are great little ankle boots for fall and work with jeans, trousers, skirts and even dresses. Apparently, the affiliate program I work with is no longer using Kohl’s as one of their retailers, so here are links to the Kohl’s website for a few different styles of ankle boots. Here is the Averyy, the Chantilly, and the Barb 2. These are not an expensive boot, and that is one of the reasons I like them. They also still look pretty good after a number of seasons, but then, I don’t wear the same pair every day. I am not getting any sort of compensation to recommend these boots, I just really like them.

Spring Outfit with Orange Pants

Just like I did for the blue pants, I wanted to show you a new outfit with my Worthington orange pants. For this one I focused on a work appropriate look. With many people finally returning to their jobs I thought it would be a good time to feature an outfit that would be perfect for the office, especially as air conditioners come back on.

I wish I would have thought to get close up of the details on this thrifted Maurices vest. I snatched it up, because I don’t have any summer weight white vests and I thought the eyelet detail and the texturing on the pockets made this such a unique piece. It has the utility vibe with the patch pockets and drawstring, but is dressier.

You can also see my H&M button down top. I found this one on the clearance rack a few years ago and just loved the botanical print with its flowers, butterflies and birds. I thought tying the front shirt tails made for a more summery look, but one that remains work appropriate. I also like the soft contrast between the stark white of the vest and the more off white of the blouse.

I added a double layered purple necklace and a few purple metal bangles to pull out the purple in the top.

I opted for more neutral shoes and bag. I thought the outfit had enough color with the bright orange pants and the flora print in the top. The neutral accessories give it not only a summer feel, but a polished and professional look. If I ever go back to an office job, I would definitely wear this. My bag you have seen on the blog before and is from Walmart and George brand. My perforated peep toe sandals are Sonoma brand from Kohl’s.

Fall/Thanksgiving Outfits - Sweatshirt and Skinny jeans - Dressy

Taking a sweatshirt and skinny jeans from casual to glam is no easy task. Accessories have a lot to do with making an outfit feel and look more dressed up. Adding a little bling, a shoe with a heel and a more fitted silhouette are just a few things to think about when taking an outfit from casual to dressed up style. For this outfit, I searched my closet for a blazer, sweater or jacket that would give the sweatshirt a more dressed up feel. The jeans themselves have bling, so can stand alone as a dressier piece.

As I mentioned in Tuesday’s post, the sweatshirt was a hand me over from my daughter and it was originally from a local retailer Eden Fashion Boutique. My skinny jeans are from Kohl’s clearance rack and are Juicy Couture.

I found this fun tweed jacket last year while thrifting. I really like this piece. The multicolored plaid print and the textured fringe around all the hems is totally my vibe. This pretty jacket is a brand called Focus 2000. The brand is no longer being manufactured but you can find it on Poshmark and thredUp. Here is the exact jacket in a 12P from Poshmark. I am wearing a regular 12.

I know not everyone likes tweed. For many years it was associated with old women. I am an older woman, but I think we just need to get over the whole, “Older women shouldn’t wear that,” or “Younger women shouldn’t wear that.” What really matters is finding your own style. I happen to like tweed and I have seen numerous “youngsters” wearing it on Pinterest. Check out this, this and this. I think tweed would look pretty with a flowy maxi skirt, a pencil skirt or even over a dress. Never say never when it comes to trying something different.

I decided to pull the little bits of green out of the jacket by wearing this layered pendant necklace. I honestly do not remember where I got this. Ha, ha. A layered necklace like this is nice, when you are not sure what jewelry to wear, but you want it to make a statement.

Since I was thinking of green I grabbed my light green tote bag from Charming Charlie. You’ve seen this before on the blog. I styled it with a maxi skirt, and a utility jacket.

The last thing I added was this new pair of Nine West western suede ankle boots. Adding a little bit of a heel and a pointier toe, elevates the look. These were a Kohl’s online purchase. I have definitely been doing more of that during this pandemic. I have been doing more of my Christmas shopping that way and have just recently placed a few orders. The thing we need to remember about online ordering is the time factor, so make sure you are ordering early. Early is also better for getting the items you are looking for.

Color Play - Bathroom Tiles

You might think by the title of my post, that I am going to talk about the tiles in my bathroom. That would not be very entertaining, as my downstairs bath has white tiles and the upstairs bath is in dire need of repair. I took a picture of these bathroom tiles at the public library nearby, as a source of inspiration for putting an outfit together. I have been trying to think of more creative ways to look at color, not only in the world around me, but for the purpose of using those colors as inspiration for outfits.

There is a lot going on with these tiles. I see several shades of blue, gray, brown and a sort of mustardy yellow tan. Ha, ha. I’m sure there is a correct color name, but who knows what it is. I was originally going to post this outfit back in July, so I had chosen to go with the white tiles rather than the darker grays.

This outfit is perfect for the transition from summer to cooler fall temps and frankly, while there is still a whole month of summer left, I am looking forward to the temps cooling off, the leaves changing and all the other tantalizing fall aromas and tastes.

Everything in this outfit was thrifted. My white skirt, a brand called VLD was styled last year in my Wearing White series. You can see the skirt worn with a blue top and fall colored scarf, here.

The thrifted 3/4 length sleeve, mustard tee is Sonoma brand. This is another piece that gets regular wear in the cooler temps. You can see it styled with a snakeskin print skirt, purple maxi skirt, and a brown cardigan,

I added the blue pendant necklace as an additional pot of color against the yellow background.

When I was putting this outfit together and wondering what bag to use, it came to me that this little thrifted piece of bling would be the perfect accompaniment. The browns also mimic some of the brown tiles in my inspirational picture. I love the little southwestern scene done in sequins and beads on this fun piece.

The black casing of the bag and the little black cord strap caused me to reach for my thrifted, black, Baretraps sandals.

Texture Talk - Part 2 - Embellishments and Fabrics

Last week I took a look at how adding texture to our outfits can change and elevate our same old, same old looks, to a new level. Texture is all around us in nature and in the homes we live in. Take a look at your living room or bedroom. There is texture on the couch in the form of upholstery, pillows, and throw blankets. Your bed probably has a thick cushy comforter or mattress pad that adds comfort for a better night's sleep. We fill our homes with pictures, decorations and nick nacks to add depth and interest to the environment we live in. Why would we not do the same thing to our outfits?

Last week I looked specifically at adding texture in the form of our accessories, such as bags, shoes, jewelry and scarves. You can see that post here. This week I want to look at fabrics and embellishments and what choices there are to add texture in this regard. 

Embellishments:

This would include anything added to a clothing piece that gives it texture that is not specifically fabric related. Fabrics like lace could be an embellishment, but I am going to leave that for the fabrics section. 

Things like beads, jewels, sequins, fringe and special buttons, are all embellishments. Certain types of stitching, like the embroidery above, as well as things like gathering or ruching also add texture to an outfit. 

Fabrics:

Lace

I love lace and I think it can add an element of elegance to any outfit. It obviously adds beautiful texture when it is worn. Combining lace with leather or lace with some other embellishment makes for an even more interesting outfit. 

Knits

My pictures all revolve around open weave knits. Things like crochet or knitted pieces are great for boosting the texture factor. However, even regular knits made in a factory add dimension to a look, especially if they are ribbed or manufactured in a way that builds texture. You'll see an example of ribbed knits a little further below.

Texture is a wonderful thing to add to our outfits. As you begin thinking about fall in particular you will be naturally reaching for things like cozy knit sweaters and fun boots. Coats and jackets will also add an element of texture to your outfit.
