Shopping our Closets - Colorful Skirt and Pantone Spring 2023 NY: Beetroot, Crystal Rose, Gray Lilac

This week we are shopping our closets looking for a colorful printed skirt to build an outfit around. I chose this floral maxi skirt that I have styled on the blog before as the place to start. Once again, I am incorporating three of the colors from the New York color palette just to give you a sampling of what the Color Institute came up with for this spring and summer.

These colors definitely fall into our radar for spring and summer. For some people pastels are a year round affair. For me, I tend to reach for these lighter, pale colors in the summer months as a way to stay and look cool. In my opinion Beetroot is very similar to Viva Magenta, although a bit more pink. Unlike years past, this year, the Color of the Year is not on the New York or London palettes. I guess they decided they could add one more color on each if they left the Color of the Year as its own entity.

My pleated maxi skirt was a clearance find from Kohl’s a few years ago. Chaps brand, it has a full lining and is very fun to style with its swishy, pleated loveliness. You can see this skirt styled with a gray tee and pink cardigan another Pantone season a few years ago.

Style Tip: As with our unique cardigan from last month’s Shopping our Closets post, start with your printed skirt and build your outfit around it, either focusing on one color in the skirt or a few different colors.

My Crystal Rose pullover sweater is a brand called Colorado Clothing and was thrifted. One of the reasons I give you the brand names on my thrifted pieces is so that if you like the brand you can take the name and plug it in on second hand clothing apps like Ebay or Poshmark and maybe find something you like.

My utility jacket from Maurices is the closest thing I have to the color called Gray Lilac. I had a bag, but in my messiness of clutter, I couldn’t find, it and might have gotten rid of it, but don’t remember. Oh dear, my brain! Ha, ha. It is a darker shade, but if you look it up on the Pantone Spring/Summer 2023 New York Palette page on their website you can see that it is similar.

I kept the accessories fairly simple as I wanted the skirt to be the focal point. I also made it my own by adding combat boots with a blingy clutch.

Style Tip: Make outfits about you and your personality. Just because a particular outfit typically is worn with a certain type of shoe or blazer, doesn’t mean you can’t mix it up a bit and choose pieces that are more to your liking and make your personality shine. The necklace and clutch were both clearance finds; the clutch at Kohl’s and the necklace at Meijer. My boots are a brand called ID Required and are thrifted.

Dreamy Dresses from Closet52 - The Doily Print Dress

This dress is all about the print. I love the fun doily pattern. If you are older, like me, then you probably had doilies around your home growing up or perhaps they were in your grandmother’s house. I always love the lacy look of a doily under a lamp on a side table or dresser. These are much more colorful than the creamy white ones I grew up with, but they definitely give the dress a lacy look.

I am very impressed with Closet52’s fabrics and details. The dress is a medium weight (polyester/spandex blend) which gives it movement and swing. This one lays very well and I did not have to worry about wearing a slip. The other detail that impressed me about all of the sleeveless dresses I picked out was that the armholes were the perfect size for me. Often the sleeveless arm holes on a piece will be too big, revealing my bra, or so small they feel constricting.

Another fabulous detail on this dress is the tie at the back of the neck. Easy on and easy off make this piece perfect for a summer party, event or dinner out after a day at the beach. The material will pack well and the fun pattern will translate into all seasons. I am already thinking about how I could add tights and ankle boots in the fall, or a blazer and skinny jeans in the winter. I love when clothing pieces have that much versatility.

For this look I simply added a few of my own elements, including a necklace, bag, combat boots, and a jacket.

There are so many ways you could style this dress from amazingly simple to wonderfully elegant. Add a pair of flip flops or sneakers for ultra casual. Fairy Tales and Print Mixing

I promise, I will be starting my Pantone Spring/Summer 2022 series next week. I can’t thank you enough for being patient with me as I maneuver this new normal in this season of life. As I type this my grand baby is sitting next to me on the floor. He is six months old going on a year. Ha, ha. He can sit up, is starting to eat solid food, looks like he might be getting his first tooth and when he is on his tummy he does planks and rocks back and forth on his hands and knees. What a joy to be able to enjoy the first year of his life with all the changes and all the fun.

I thought I would show you what I am wearing today, which is a mix of fairytale meets military. I never used to do much print mixing. In fact, I never would have thought to put multiple prints together, but now I do it with ease and even look for ways to combine numerous prints as the same time. One of the key elements in classic print mixing is to pick similar color schemes in all of your prints.

I got this Forever 21 sweater at a thrift store. I rarely ever shop retailers like Forever 21, or H & M any more, though they used to be frequent stops when my girls were younger. The clothes were cute and cheap, but I am trying to get away from “fast fashion” and move towards more sustainable choices in my purchasing. That is why thrifting is so high on my list when it comes to finding things, not only for myself, and other members of my family, but also for my home. I have found kitchen items, wall decor, picture frames, candles and even movies and books at second hand shops. This past Christmas I gave everyone in the family a thrift box filled with all thrifted items from clothing to books and movies to cute decor. It was fun to shop for people that way.

Unicorns are the stuff of fairy tales. I am less about the one horned wonder and more about regular horses with insight into their master’s whims and thoughts…think Gandalf’s horse Shadowfax from Lord of the Rings. Still, I could not resist this sweater, since I am a sucker for fairy tales and all things fantastical. Because the top is short, I added a long sleeve pink tee underneath.

It is another cold day, so I knew I wanted a scarf since the top has a wide neck. I remembered, I had recently thrifted this pretty cherry blossom scarf and thought it not only went with the top due to the pink flowers, but the delicate, lacy branches have a fairy tale look to them.

I was searching for a different pair of jeans when I came upon these and I was so thrilled that not only did the embroidery match my color scheme, and add another print, but these fit better than when I last tried them on. Yay! These are Levi’s brand and I got them a while back from Kohl’s clearance.

When I think of fairy tales, I think of princesses, knights, villains, and sometimes monsters. There is usually some sort of magic and always a quest or adventure to go on. I also imagine, flowy fabrics, with the fair maidens dressed in pastels and tulle. The villains are garbed in black or red. Ha, ha. Yes, my fairy tale memories are full of stereotypes. These are not the politically correct fairy tales of today. My favorite Disney fairy tale retelling is Beauty and the Beast. I love both the cartoon and live action versions.

I always wanted to be a different sort of princess. I wanted to be the warrior, so when I started thinking about this outfit, I knew I had to throw in my own touch by adding combat boots. Of course, if you are going to kick some villain butt, you can’t be in dresses and heels, as least I couldn’t. I would end up tangled up in my gown and spraining an ankle from trying to walk in heels. Ha, ha. These are also thrifted, and are a regular part of my fall through spring wardrobe.

Style Tip: An easy way to add an edgy element to any outfit is to wear combat or motorcycle boots. They are fun with jeans, skirts, dresses and even shorts, for those of you who have pretty legs. These days combat boots come in a variety of colors and styles. Check out the shopping links below for options.

I am a child of the King, therefore, I am a princess. I fight battles every day on my knees and on my walkabouts with God, therefore, I am a warrior. I am full of flaws, lack confidence and have a list of idiosyncrasies, but I stand in His strength. Fairy tales all have elements of truth. Magic or miracles? Monsters or murderers? Fairy godmothers, or just grandmothers, I am living an adventure.

What is Going on with the Blog?

Hello everyone! It has been a very long few months and I feel that I owe all of you an explanation. From the middle of spring I started experiencing cold like symptoms that at the time I attributed to allergies. I went along, taking my antihistamines every day and using the ones with decongestants when I needed as I began to have congestion and a cough. I muddled through May and June, but by mid July I began to think I had a sinus infection as I was not showing any signs of improvement.

Over the course of the next four and a half months I would have numerous conversations via my online medical app with my primary care doctor. I would also end up in the urgent care on two different occasions, and have two ER visits. I would end up sleeping (and I use that word lightly, because I hardly slept) on the couch since my cough was so incessant I could not lay down. I had three rounds of different antibiotics, two orally and one delivered via my neti pot. I had three rounds of oral steroids, the last which titrated down over the course of a month. I also ended up on two different inhalers and two psych meds to trick my brain into thinking I didn’t have to cough.

The turning point came when I woke up one morning mid October, and took my blood oxygen level (which I had been doing since my daughter gave me a pulse ox meter). A good reading will be in the mid to upper 90’s. Mine was 85. I had been losing my appetite over the last month or so, and that morning I started vomiting. I called my husband on the home phone from my spot on the couch and said, “I think it is time. I need to go to the hospital.” Over the course of those months, I had gotten tested for Covid two different times. I had no fever, ever, but the cough was so bad, I would have been negligent if I didn’t get checked. The test came back negative both times.

We got to the ER at about 7AM and the place was almost deserted; a God thing, since hospital ER’s have been full and overflowing with 7 to 10 hour waits to be seen. As soon as I told them I couldn’t breath, they got me right into a room and did an EKG to make sure I wasn’t having a heart attack. I was attached to oxygen and they started organizing testing and plans for care.

I ended up being admitted to a program with that hospital, called Acute Care at Home. Basically, you go home but the hospital provides all the equipment to monitor your care via on line applications and Blue Tooth connections. I also came home on oxygen, so I had to take an ambulance ride to get home. I never realized how bumpy they are. I stayed admitted to that program for five days. Over the course of that time I was in regular contact with nurses and two different doctors, one who was the hospitalist with the program, and another who was a general practitioner who helped with the in home acute care program. Both of them were completely attentive and proactive about restoring my health. In fact, the hospitalist pulled some strings to get me in with a pulmonologist right away.

The end result of this intensive care was that I started to improve. A week later I was able to sleep in my own bed. My cough was minor and I only needed oxygen for about four days. The combination of care and medication brought me back to a level of health where I could sleep, eat and interact with my family. It was a long four months. I am still struggling with sinus issues, including the loss of smell and taste. I have better days and worse days depending on the weather and the allergens around. I am using a neti pot, a sinus steroid nose spray and an inhaler for the asthma like symptoms. But, I am much improved and feel like life is back to being more normal.

I have been struggling to get back to the blog, but it seems my creative mind has suffered as well. I am sure there are connections to long term illness, depression and seasonal affective disorder that are coming into play. I have been regularly posting on Instagram, so for those of you who have an account you can follow me there. I do hope to get this blog up and running again and plan on working back to at least two posts a week about mid January.

For those of you who are new to my blog, I apologize for not showing up sooner. For those who have been regular subscribers, I want to thank you for continuing to support me. I hope to start giving all of you content on fashion and faith that will not only inspire you, but encourage you. Encouragement is my main goal. We all need to be encouraged!

Meet Maureen and Mavis

I want to introduce you to two gals who are going to help me out on the blog every once in a while. They used to work retail, but lost their jobs last fall and now they live with us. They were kind of happy their retail positions got canned. Both of them really wanted to become detectives and solve murder mysteries. For the time being they said they would model for me, since they have nothing better to do and there haven’t been any murders in our neighborhood. Although, with a lot more husbands and wives having to spend loads more time together, would it really be a surprise if someone ended up dead? Ha, ha.

Mavis is the taller one. She has a more conservative, classic stye, and is the planner on the team. Maureen likes to mix it up, gets a little edgy with her clothes and loves to play with technology.

Today, our models are showing off a trendy style that is perfect for spring, leopard print and denim. Join me as we get to know the girls and their style a little better.

Mavis

Mavis is wearing a thrifted dark wash denim pencil skirt. This is a brand called No Faze Jeans. I’ve worn this skirt before on the blog and you can see it styled for a casual look and for a date night look. Mavis is dressed for a stop at the coffee shop to do some computer work on a case (or she would be if she had a client and their wasn’t a lockdown). She likes this skirt because it is comfortable to sit in, with a good amount of stretch.

This awesome leopard print bomber jacket was another thrift find. Another Christopher and Banks piece, I like the cognac colored background and the sturdy zippers on the front and pockets. Mavis likes that it looks cool, but still classy.

The brown top is a Faded Glory tee that I have had for a while.

This leopard and gold pendant necklace goes perfectly with the outfit.

Mixing snakeskin print with leopard? Why not! Mavis isn’t afraid to print mix. A private eye needs to have a cute bag to keep their necessities in: lip gloss, tissues, credit cards and a gun, of course. A girl needs to have some protection.

Mavis always goes for a more conservative shoe. She likes shoes that look cute, but also offer support and stay on the foot. You never know when you might need to run after a criminal. These thrifted Natural Soul by Naturalizer heels are perfect.

Maureen

Maureen loves to stand out and be noticed. She loves clothes that are more flirty and feminine, but also has no problem wearing motorcycle boots and leather jackets. Today’s look revolves around a light weight, silky leopard print dress, a brand called Forever (possibly from Forever 21) and also a thrift store find. the dress is perfect for warmer weather as it is light weight and sleeveless.

You’ve see this thrifted Rue 21 distressed denim jacket on the blog before. It is one of my favorite denim jackets and offers a shorter cut, than most. The fact that this jacket has 3/4 length sleeves and subtle distressing means it is versatile for casual and dressed up occasions. You can see how I styled it with a LuLaRoe dress, a midi dress and a maxi dress, a leopard print skirt, a sweater tunic and a high waisted skirt. Maureen loves her denim, especially with a dress.

Maureen and Mavis are both modest girls by choice, so Maureen wanted a tank top under the lower cut v-neck of the dress. This one is thrifted and St John’s Bay. I like the little sparkle detail along the scoop.

Maureen, like Mavis loves jewelry, but hers will typically carry an air of hippy vibes and boho. I found this beaded choker while thrifting.

Maureen loves a bag that she can throw her lunch in if she wants and just like Mavis, she usually carries a piece, although her’s is a bit bigger than her friend’s. This thrifted, slouchy, hobo bag is American Eagle brand and has two handles, so you can either use it as a cross body bag, or a shoulder bag.

These thrifted Falls Creek combat boots are definitely showing their wear, but I thought they would look cute with this dress. Maureen thought so too. You can see how I styled these boots with pink jeggings, skinny jeans, and a printed a-line skirt.

Seeing Red - Actual Amy - Plaid Jacket

Today is the last post for the month of February and for my Seeing Red series. If you are new to the blog, I do a lot of series, as it gives me a theme around which to style my outfits, so seeing as February is Valentine’s month and Heart Disease awareness month, red was my color of choice.

Today’s focal piece is a recent purchase from Maurice’s clothing store. This plaid jacket with its sherpa collar called to me as soon as I saw it. “Amy! Hey, Amy! You know you want me. I would look amazing on you, and you would look amazing with me wrapped around you. I’d also keep you cozy, as well as ramp up your casual, biker-chic vibe.” I do believe the jacket was right. Take a look at today’s outfit and see if you agree?

There are so many things I love about this jacket. The color, the pattern and the sherpa along the collar, cuffs and zipper inside, are the main characteristics that drew me to it. The deciding factor was the price. Since it was a winter/seasonal item, the price was only $19.99. I was doing a return to Maurice’s so I considered it an exchange and got it. The other nice thing about this piece is the fit. I could actually wear a bulkier item underneath and still zip it up without looking like the Pillsbury Dough Boy. Ha, ha. It was a cold dat when we took these pictures and I clearly felt warm with this jacket on.

I was obviously going for a very casual look, so I chose my thrifted, distressed, Vera Wang cropped jeans. I wear these a lot in the summer, but thought they would give a fun, edgy vibe to this look.

It also seemed appropriate to have a thrifted band sweatshirt. I like the Beatles, but I was more of an Alice Cooper and Aerosmith chick as I was growing up. My younger daughter and I went to a Cooper concert a few years ago and it was such a blast. I guess I should have gotten a tee shirt!

To go along with this tough girl vibe, I chose accessories that included metal and black. Please don’t judge me for adding flowers to my olive hobo bag. Ha ha. It may have been a wish for spring, my inner flower child feelings or the fact that I really just love flowers.

Finally, my Seven Dials combat boots finished the look. What do you think?

Why is this outfit actually me? I was the one that beat up boys when I was in elementary school. I was the one that chased after my brothers on their motorcycles on my bicycle. I was the one that swam in the creek behind our house. I’m the one who would really like to have a motorcycle of my own. I’m the one who would like to be a warrior princess, if I could. This outfit just seems to sum me up. I told you that jacket was speaking to me. Ha, ha.

Outside the Box - Floral Dress with Combat Boots

I have never been especially adventurous with fashion. My style is somewhat classic with a tomboy edge and a dash of boho meets warrior princess, or at least that is what I would like to think. I am not overtly feminine, though I do like pink and especially love lace. As I revealed in last week’s Ordinary Amy post, I like motorcycle jackets, blue jeans and boots or tennis shoes. The premise for having a column called Outside the Box, is exactly that, to get me thinking outside my own fashion box.

This week’s outfit is what I would call motorcycle mayhem meets feminine flirt. Let me know if you agree.

I often see bloggers who put together outfits that I would have never dreamed of doing. Not because they are so bold or daring, but because my mind would just never think to combine combat boots, fishnet stockings and a floral dress.

I began this outfit journey with the floral dress. I picked this up at Gabes this past spring with the thought in mind that it would be a great fall piece. Bright florals on a dark background make me think more of cooler weather and sipping hot cocoa. It’s not that you couldn’t wear these colors in the spring and summer, but there is something seasonal about certain color combinations.

I know fashion is not contained neatly in one box and many in the fashion world are strongly pushing against the stereotypes of weight and age, which is awesome, and I fully support. However, there is also a push against traditional fashion ideas, such as not wearing white before or after the summer months, or allowing seasonal color changes to affect what we wear. I’m fine with many of these ideas, but fashion is also about wearing what we want to wear. I like darker colors in the fall and winter and brighter colors in the spring and summer. That is just me!

What really drew me to this little floral number besides the print were the bell sleeves. You can’t see them really well in these photos, but they add a fun element to the piece.

During the summer, when my hubby and I were on vacation in Wisconsin, I went with my mother-in-law to a department store that was going out of business. They were just getting started with their sales and we spent our time looking at shoes. It was then, I came across these boots.

Just like motorcycle jackets, I love combat boots. This is now my third pair and I love the embellishments on these. I’ve included a few shopping links at the end of similar pairs. These zip on the inner ankle so are easy to get on and off. I thought the contrast of the floral dress with the combat boots was a look that was outside my norm.

To give the outfit another more feminine edge I added the fishnet tights. These are a heavier weight than true fishnet stockings. I didn’t even remember I had these until I started looking through my hose bin! I saw these and said, “Yes, this is it!” The outfit would be just as fun with a pair of sweater tights in a dark or a bright color like red or cream. I do like darker on the bottom for the thinning factor.

Because the dress is so busy, I kept my accessories minimal. I put on my yellow pendant necklace and added a faux leather cross body bag for a last touch of tough girl.

This bag makes me think of a motorcycle saddle bag. I’m a little preoccupied! My hubby had a Harley before we ever met, and I keep trying to convince him we need to get one in our old age. Ha, ha.

Ordinary Amy - Tomboy Memories

I am using the word ordinary as a term to mean usual, not plain. I don't want any of you thinking I only think of myself as ordinary...okay, so once in a while I do struggle with the old self image, but that is not what I am intending to address with this new monthly column on the blog. 

Ordinary Amy is going to be a monthly column emphasizing outfits that are my go to's. These will be pieces that I frequently reach for, because I find them, comfortable, easy to wear and pair other pieces with, yet still stylish. 

A v-neck sweater, red in honor of Valentine's Day, a pair of skinny jeans and a pair of combat boots. Casual, comfy, warm and a masculine edge. 

I grew up in a home with two older brothers. Being the only girl and the baby, it was my goal to try to keep up with the boys, as annoying as that was to them. Ha ha. From playing in the creek behind the house, to making trails in the field down the road for their dirt bikes, I tried to follow them everywhere. As far as I was concerned I was a boy, just like them. I had a short hair cut and wore pants as often as I could. I can still remember my mother and I fighting about the fact that she thought I should wear dresses to school. She gave that fight up before too long. When we went swimming in our pool, I would wear a pair of shorts and that was it...no top. I was a boy. why should I have to wear a top? (This was before I began to blossom and hit puberty, so flat chested, was flat chested.)

I can still remember when I got my first period. I explained to my mother what was happening and when she told me what it was, I ran from the house angry and crying. I didn't want to be a girl. Gradually, hormones did their job. I started to change in shape and I also began to notice boys! I became extremely private and modest, even around my brothers, and I became interested in clothing, hair styles and eventually make up. 

However, I still prefer pants over dresses and I like looks that have an edgy, military or masculine vibe. 

This type of look is something I turn to again and again. I love boots. I also like skinny jeans. I used to never wear them, so when I finally tried them, I fell in love. The thing I like about skinnies is that I can wear them all year round. In fall and winter I tuck them into boots and in spring and summer, I roll them up and pair them with ankle boots, sneakers, flats or flip flops. 

A chunky, cable knit sweater is stylish, but forgiving enough that I don't have to worry about my bulges. This particular sweater is Chaps brand from the Kohl's clearance rack. I am wearing a short sleeve lace tee underneath which provided an extra layer of warmth and a touch of ivory around the neck line. 

When I started putting this outfit together, I chose the sweater and jeans first, but then I thought of adding this fun bomber jacket which I introduced on the blog earlier in my travel post from last March. This little number is actually quite warm. It was a JC Penney clearance rack find and is Arizona brand. I think I paid about $5.00 for it. 

With the bomber jacket I knew I had to wear my thrifted combat boots, giving the whole look a WWII feel. With that in mind, it made me think of my dad. 

My dad, who grew up in a pacifist Mennonite family, was a hard working farm boy with a fascination with airplanes. When he was old enough he left home and went to work for the Curtiss-Wright airplane factory in Buffalo, NY. making wings for the P-47 for WWII. My dad, however was not content to make wings, he wanted to enlist. When he went to sign up, they asked if he was employed. When he told them where he worked they rejected him, saying his work was more important to the war effort than being in the service. Being the man he was, he waited a little longer, quit his job and went back to enlist. They let him right in. His enlistment came late in the war and he ended up serving in Air Sea Rescue on a B-17. 

I found this little pendant necklace somewhere along the way, possibly at Charming Charlie. What originally drew me to it was the bling, but it suddenly occurred to me that it would be a good piece to remind me of my dad. My dad passed away eleven years ago, but obviously I still think of him often.

Pantone Fall 2017 - The New York Palette - Tawny Port and Golden Lime

This week's color combination is a blend of a dark maroon and a more subtle green. Tawny Port is described on the Pantone site as "Taking the red family to new depths..." I think of it as more of purple than a red, but then purple is made up of red and blue. Golden Lime takes on a more tropical hue, so I though pairing these two colors would make for an interesting outfit. 

These pictures were taken at Wildwood Metropark here in Toledo. This is an amazing park and so close to home. It used to be the estate of Champion Spark Plug magnate Robert Stranahan. The park boasts the original Manor house and outbuildings, as well as acres of trails, a covered bridge and boardwalk. It is used for everything from family picnics to all manner of photo opportunities. In December the Manor house will be decorated for Christmas and thousands of people will come to take a tour. 

For today's pics we just found a piece of trail to take pictures on.

I've had this skirt, which is Jones Wear Brand, for a while. Honestly, I don't even remember where I got it. Ha, ha. However, it is a fun skirt with it's whimsical pattern and colors. It is fully lined and would be considered either midi or tea length, depending on what chart you look at. 

This open waterfall cardi is ANA brand. It probably leans more towards purple than what Tawny Port actually is, but I think It works well. The Tawny Port splotches in the skirt actually are more red. It is amazing how you can pair something with a color that has both red and blue in it's undertones and it will lean toward the color of the piece you have on.

This faux lace top from Croft and Barrow appears more green in person, but you get the idea. I like these types of tops as they give the appearance of lace, but you don't have to wear a cami underneath. This one is a silky, stretchy material, so very easy to wear and wash. 

You can also see I added a gold belt to bring out that color in the skirt as well, plus it adds a point of interest and texture as well as defining my shape. I chose this bluish purple agate necklace as the skirt has just a little bit of this color in it too. 

My bag is thrifted and you can see I've used it before in this post. This dark olive bag from Talbots has two handles. One allows you to use it as a top handle hobo bag and the other as a cross body bag. It is nice to have options. 

I was really stumped when it came to what shoes to wear. My casual side won out in the end and I went for the combat boots. These are thrifted and are Falls Creek brand. Falls Creek is a brand sold at Meijer. 

I thought this was a fun outfit for fall. It is comfy, cozy and for cooler weather could be made wearable by swapping out the short sleeve stretchy tee for a long sleeve top and adding heavier tights under the skirt.
