Celebrating My 3 Year Bloggiversary with a Giveaway

It is hard for me to believe that I am celebrating three years as a Faith and Fashion blogger. It has been an interesting hobby and I have definitely created new pathways in my brain. There was so much I had to learn about downloading pictures, pasting in links, collaborations and more. There were times that I was ready to throw in the towel, and others, where I was very excited about continuing this journey as a blogger. I have connected with friends, people I may never personally meet, but friends still the same and I have stretched myself by learning new things both technologically and in the realm of fashion blogging.

I wanted to make this a celebration by giving something away. You, my faithful subscribers, are the ones who really keep me motivated to keep doing this. Let’s face it, there are thousands of fashion bloggers out there and thousands of faith bloggers. You could easily find a blog that is more up on the trends, and geared towards featuring great clothes from retailers for you to see and buy. You could also find a blog that is more geared towards the younger set, moms who are raising kids, who need just the right advice or encouragement about how to keep their sanity in these busy years of their lives. These are all good and so many of them are extremely well done. So why do I keep doing this?

Every time, I get discouraged, and start asking myself, why am I doing this, God seems to send just the right person along, to comment on my blog. When someone tells me I inspired them with a certain outfit, to try to do a similar thing from their own closet, or when a subscriber tells me, the faith post I wrote, was just what they needed to hear, that is why I keep doing this.

You see, when I started blogging, it wasn’t about making money, getting free stuff, or becoming famous, it revolved around my desire to write and my desire to encourage. I know in my heart of hearts that there are hundreds of women out there who are having bad days. It might be hard to get out of bed, let alone, figure out what to wear. I also know there are women, like me, who can’t always talk about what is going on inside, because there are other factors and people involved. However, we can still be encouraging by just being there for one another. Think of me, as that friend that shows up at your door at just the right time, to give you a hug and remind you that you are beautiful and you are valuable. We all need that.

I thought it would be fun to show you a few pictures from when I first started blogging and compare them to more recent photos. Let me know if you see any changes, for good or bad. Ha, ha.

I think it is fun to watch the progression, not only in my daughter Rebecca’s photography, my other daughter Rachel’s make up, but also in the changes in my hair. Ha, ha. Having a blog is a great way to document changes in your life.

Spring Trend - Utility Dressing

Today I am looking at another spring trend, utility dressing. Typically we think of utility dressing as something a mechanic, painter or other utility worker might wear. Often the uniform will have large pockets, snaps and zippers for ease of wear and storage. These same details have translated into women’s fashion with utility jackets, pants, vests and tops. This spring the trend is bigger than ever and includes jumpsuits in sleek, fun styles.

I am not a fan of jumpsuits. I spend way to much time in the bathroom, so i need things to be as quick as possible, especially when I am at work. However, since I decided to do this little series, I thought I would try to come up with an outfit that mimics a jumpsuit, but still has the ease of a two piece outfit.

This outfit is actually made up of three pieces, but you get the idea. The way to mimic the jumpsuit look is to go back to a monochrome color scheme. I chose olive for my outfit, because that is the color I had utility type pieces in. Large pockets, snaps and zippers all make this outfit fit into the utility vibe.

My button up top is Worthington brand and I’ve had it for a while. I love to shop JC Penney’s clearance racks and I’m sure that is where I found this. I am fond of Worthington pieces as they are usually made for average women like me, who need a little stretch, but still want some structure in a blouse or a pair of pants. I’ve gotten a number of dress pants in this brand too. The other thing I like about this blouse is that is doesn’t gape in the front. The buttons are in the right spots. There is nothing worse than gapage (yes, I did use that as a word) if you are trying to look put together for work or other activities.

My cargo skinnies are another JC Penney purchase from a few years ago. These are Gloria Vanderbilt. I like her brand for the same reason I like Worthington, ease of wear and fit. I used to get Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, but my taste in jeans has grown to include brands that have an edgier and perhaps more youthful vibe to them. I think Gloria Vanderbilt is great for dress pants or, like these, something different than jeans.

The utility vest is a more recent purchase from last season at Kohl’s. This olive utility vest is Mudd brand and was another clearance find. There are very few things that I buy, that aren’t from clearance racks or thrift stores. I could have used my olive utility jacket, because yes, I have one of those as well, but it was a completely different shade of olive. Isn’t it funny how colors that are supposed to be the same, can be so different, but that’s a topic for a different post.

Here is a more detailed look at the pockets on both the pants and the vest. As you can see the vest also has toggles so you can adjust the fit to make it tighter or looser. It has both a full zipper and snaps, giving it added metallic details. I like the brassy look of the metals as well.

My accessories are fairly simple. A black velvet choker with a cross, a few faux leather bracelets, a straw bag with black trim and my black heeled Ralph Lauren boots. The bag and boots were thrifted.

I cuffed the pants for another fun element. If you didn’t want to cuff them, you could also tuck them in. Doing that allows the buckles on the boots to shine, adding that metallic utility detail to the entire outfit.

I’m adding this picture, just because I really liked my modelesque hair and smile. And I didn’t even need to have a fan! Ha, ha.

Following trends is not so much to mimic a look as it is to make it completely our own. I think that is exactly what I did with this outfit.

Spring Trend - Neons and Pastels

In contrast to last week’s post, Spring Trend - Head to Toe Neutral, this week I am focusing on the Spring Trend of neons and pastels. Rather than divide this into two posts, I decided to combine the trends and the colors into one outfit. If we can wear neutral on the top and bottom, why not create an outfit with neon and pastel together?

This bright neon yellow top is sleeveless and there was no way I was going out in the snow in a sleeveless top, so I added a recent purchase from Forever 21’s clearance racks, this citron yellow chenille sweater. The top is H&M and is a hand-me-over from my daughter. The sweater is as cozy and soft as it looks, so I was glad to add it to my outfit on this very cold day.

These blush jeans are H&M and you’ve seen them before on the blog in my 20 Days of Christmas series. They have a little bit of distressing on them, but because they are so light you can hardly notice. Since I was going with light pink for my pastel, I added my blush SO flats and my blush clutch.

My necklace was a thrift store find. I thought it added another splash of neon in a different color. If you don’t like neon, this is a simple way to add just a splash of color without being overwhelmed by it. Accessories are always a good way to add color that you wouldn’t necessarily wear near you face.

Spring Trends (Already?)

I know, I know, why am I already talking about spring trends, when we are about to be blasted by arctic air and winter doesn’t officially end for another two months? Some of it has to do with the fashion industry and the fact that they are simply very pushy. Ha, ha. They want us to already be thinking about, blogging about and buying for the next season. I don’t really buy into that so much, but I do think it is nice to think about warmer weather and being able to go outside without freezing our patooties off.

When I begin to research the upcoming trends for each season, I simply Google Spring 2019 and all sorts of links pop up. The fashion news industry is on top of its game and you can find dozens of articles on this year’s trends. As always, I pick and choose which trends I want to participate in and I try not to “buy” into a trend, unless it is one I know I will be wearing for a very long time. I will invest in a piece or pieces for something I feel comfortable in and that I feel will work well for many seasons to come. For example, leopard print. This animal print has been around for a long time and even though animal print in general made a come back last fall and into this spring, leopard is just one of those that I feel every woman can wear and pairs well with just about any color.

The following is a partial list of the 2019 spring trends, with a few examples. This list is not exhaustive, rather are the ones that I liked from the websites I looked at.

1- Beige or Neutral Head to Toe

Since I am a woman who really likes color, I am not thinking this trend will be my favorite, but I wanted to have an open mind. Shopping my closet, I found a few pieces that might work, so you will see an outfit, designed by me, that mimics this trend, coming soon.

2 - Neons and Pastels

Almost to the opposite extreme of head to toe beige we have neons and pastels abundant on the color scene. You’ll see more on color when I do my Pantone Spring 2019 series in a few weeks, but for now, neon yellow, green, pink and more will add a pop of color to any outfit. In addition, if neon is not in your comfort zone, then pastels are back in full force. Look for soft greens, light purples and calming blues. Tie Dye is also back, so if you still have that tie dye shirt from the sixties or seventies pull it out. It’s back in style! If you don’t have anything tie dye, it’s a great project to do with your kids or grandkids.

3 - Utility Dressing

Jumpsuits are coming back in force and especially those that look like worker outfits. Zippers, pockets and similar embellishments have turned the ordinary into the extraordinary. If you don’t like the inconvenience of a jumpsuit, try pairing a utility jacket with a similarly colored pair of jeans or cargo pants. It’s like wearing a jumpsuit without the struggle when you have to use the restroom.

4 - Crafted Pieces

Crafted pieces are coming back around. Think about the sweaters and shawls many of our mothers and grandmothers used to knit and crochet. These are becoming popular again and include things like macrame, weaving, and fish net. If you go out in your garage, you might be able to find something that could serve as trendy attire. Ha, ha. Honestly, though, I like crafted pieces, especially light weight knits that can serve as over pieces in the spring, summer, and fall.

5 - Black & White Polka Dots

Polka dots are back and in the classic color combination of black and white. I like polka dots in any color, but pairing black and white makes for a print that can be work friendly and easily transitioned to a casual or dressy date night look. I compare polka dots to animal print or camouflage. It is a print that can be worn in many ways and with many other colors. Adding one piece like this to your wardrobe will give you new options for creating fun classy outfits.

7 - Scarf Prints

Print mixing is bigger and bolder than ever. An easy way to do this is buy a piece that already has the print mixing done for you. Scarf print pieces are the perfect way to mix prints and take the guess work out of it. Scarf prints are also a classy way to jazz up an outfit, whether pairing with a pair of jeans for a casual date night look, or a skirt for the office.

These are just a few of the Spring 2019 Trends that you will see online and in stores. You don’t have to buy into the trends at all. You can do exactly what I did and shop your closet. I found a number of pieces that are similar and I will be showing you my spring trend outfits over the next few weeks.

Burgundy Lace Top

As most of you who follow me regularly know, I love color. One of my faves during the colder months is burgundy and maroon. In writing this article I, again, looked up what the difference between these two colors is. Maroon is said to have more of a reddish brown tinge, whereas burgundy leans more towards purple. That being the case, I would say that today’s outfit is burgundy.

I received this pretty lace top from my hubby for Christmas. This is another top from Marshall.s. The lace body is fully lined and the sleeves end in a bell.

This faux leather skirt actually seems to be able to be both burgundy and maroon. Some clothing pieces are like that. The color takes on the hue of whatever it is being paired with.

The rest of the outfit was pretty easy. I went for gold in my accessories. The necklace was also a Christmas gift from my daughter. The woven clutch was thrifted.

I don’t know if the gray tights work. what do you think? I like the combination of gray with burgundy, but I don't know if it takes the outfit level down a notch. I’d love to hear your opinion on that. Along with the gray hose, I went with my heeled suede burgundy shooties.

Mixing Metals

There was a time, back in the stone age, when women were not allowed to mix metals in their outfits. Why, there was a time when women were not allowed to mix patterns, or wear white after Labor Day, or wear pants. How things have changed. Many of these changes have been good, especially when it comes to fashion and the average woman. Now women can wear their floral blouse under a striped sweater and get all manner of compliments. A woman can wear white all winter long if she so desires, and us gals have been wearing pants for a very long time.

Many of the changes that have come about in the last few years, I have had to get used to. I was brought up to only wear white between Memorial Day and Labor Day. I keep my white pants out now and even though I don’t reach for them as often as some women might, it is not because of a rule that no longer exists. It took me a while to get the print mixing thing figured out, but now I print mix with the best of them.

One of the more subtle changes in the fashion world that I have been adjusting to is to mix metals. In other words it is now acceptable to wear gold with silver with copper with bronze with brass and pewter. Anything goes. My daughter suggested I take the challenge and make it my own, so this outfit is my first intentional attempt at metal mixing.

I started the outfit with the gold metallic top that I got for Christmas. It is a cute piece that my hubby got for me from a retailer named Marshall’s, with a little help from our daughter. It is a top that I will wear more when the weather warms up.

The fun snakeskin print vest I found in my daughter’s get rid of pile. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure, right? The front of the vest comes together with a metallic piece that holds the fabric in place. I couldn’t resist taking this fun topper home and even though it has a little wear, it doesn’t show due to the animal print. I am already thinking about how I can style this more casually for a great date night look.

I decided to go with a pencil skirt for a work wear or date night appropriate outfit. I like the streamlined look of a pencil skirt, especially under a more voluminous topper.

For my next metal, I put on a necklace that I also thrifted from my daughter. I thought the mix of copper, silver and brassy colors made this the perfect statement piece for this outfit. Using a necklace like this makes it easy to mix metals.

I got these leather boots at a local thrift store. Real leather, heels and fun details made me take these home with me.

My finishing touch on the metal mixing was to grab my little gray clutch with the brassy chain and edging and a mixed metals charm bracelet. The silver rings are my daily choice for hand wear, so I almost always have those on and the wedding band is white gold.

I like how this outfit turned out. The browns and grays are similar to the silver and coppers of the metals. This outfit is earthy with a touch of shimmer and shine.

Yellow Hooded Vest and a Shout Out to Tommy John

It finally feels like real winter here in the midwest. We had a few inches of snow over the weekend, and I was very excited. Being from Buffalo, NY, I miss the snow that we typically get back home. There is just something fun and cozy about watching the snow fall from inside a warm, comfortable place. However, a substantial snowfall is rare in my area and in just a few days we will be getting a dose of bitter cold. All the more reason to layer up.

I was contacted a few months ago by the Tommy John company, who asked if I would like to pick out a set monetary amount of product in exchange for a mention on my blog. No money was exchanged and all opinions are my own. I selected three pieces: a cami, a pair of underwear and a pair of socks.

Let me start by saying no underwear will be shown in this post, ha, ha. Although, you will see the socks. Tommy John was not looking for a model, but for a real person to try their product and give an honest review. I did wear the pieces under my outfit that I will be showing you and I am pleased to say, I love their products. The cami and panties are made of a soft, light weight cotton blend that does not bind or pinch. The cami is extra long, so it can be worn tucked in without fear of it untucking. The panties are smooth and won’t leave panty lines under your tighter fitting pants or skirts. The socks are thick and soft. I chose to use them as a pair of boot socks since I was wearing boots.

I got this yellow vest from my daughter for Christmas. It is a great piece with a faux fur lining and a zip off hood. It is very warm for those days when you want to do some shopping and don’t want to wear a full coat for running into the store.

In keeping with my love of layers I started with my Tommy John cami, followed by a Chico’s turtleneck, and a thrifted long sleeve button up. I wanted a completely casual look, so left the button up untucked and wore my distressed jeans.

My yellow bag was a recent thrift find. I like a light weight cross body bag and this one fits the bill. It is made a a nylon material and has serval pockets. It also has a wider strap which helps keep the neck and shoulders from getting kinks in them.

You can see the vest has pockets and toggles to make it tighter or looser. The hood is nice too and also lined with the same faux fur as the rest of the vest.

The button up top is busy enough on its own, but I did add this fringe pendant necklace just for fun.

The boots I chose to wear are my brown Sonoma biker boots. These are a mid-calf boot with a wider shaft so are great for tucking in, but also work perfectly under a boot cut jean.

Eva Trends - Half Collar Sweater Top

When I first was contacted by Eva Trends to do a collaboration, I immediately went to their site to check out their merchandise. What I found was a large collection of pieces from roomy artistic tops, to lovely lace dresses, to baggy grunge type pants. There really is something for everyone at this retailer. With reasonable price points and rapid turn over of styles there is always something new to look at on their website.

This is the second collaboration I have done with Eva Trends and enjoyed selecting the pieces that I have been sharing with you. Today is my final piece and is called the Half Collar Sweater Top with Dough Twist Stripes.

There are so many pieces that I like, but when I saw this sweater, I thought it would be perfect for the winter. Not only is it a rich, dark red, but I like the looser fit and the half collar. It is not truly a turtle neck, but not a crew next either.

This sweater features drop shoulders, dough stripe or cable knit texturing and flared or bell sleeves. This is a thick sweater and quite warm. This particular sweater is no longer available, but if you click on the link you will see several pages of fun sweaters, many of which would be great for spring.

I decided to style the sweater for this shoot with my plaid ankle pants, however, I wore this to work the other day and wore a pair of boot cut jeans and my dark red, ankle boots. The plaid pants are fun, but with where this sweater ends, adds a great deal of bulk to my widening bottom. Yes, I am one of those people who gained weight over Christmas!

What a face, right?

For accessories I chose my brown, lace up ankle boots, some beaded jewelry and my blue, textured clutch.

Cable knit sweaters are a warm cozy way to dress up an outfit. Layer collared blouses underneath or throw one over a dress. Do you own a cable knit sweater or two? Eva Trends - Verdant Cardigan

The word verdant means green with grass or other vegetation or of a bright green color. Today’s featured piece from Eva Trends is just that, a piece reminiscent of the first greens of spring. Who doesn’t look forward to those first green buds of spring after a long, cold winter. While this winter, so far, has been an exception to the usual winters we have, I still look forward to when the cold, drab days, loosen their grip and spring once again claims the land. In the mean time, this sweater is the perfect piece for a cold winter day.

The Verdant Cardigan is a heavy weight sweater made of a cellulose based fiber knows as Viscose. Viscose is not a completely natural fabric such as cotton or silk, but is also not completely man made. The mateiral is plant based and results in a silky, soft fabric used in the manufacture of various clothing pieces as well as upholstery. The resulting fabric hangs well and provides a heavy weight perfect for sweaters or coats.

There are many fun features about this open front cardi besides the material itself. It has pockets that are woven right in, meaning no fear of things coming unattached. The pockets are square and roomy.

Another fun detail is the stitching on the front and sleeves. The back is plain. The length is perfect for office wear or just for a cozy night at home.

For this outfit I decided to put the pretty green sweater over my plaid top from Christopher and Banks. I added my Chico’s slimming pants, my SO olive booties and my Charming Charlie tote bag. The silver and coppery bead necklace finished the look.

This is a very pretty cardigan and I really like it. It will be great for cold, winter days at the office and at home. My only caution is that the sizing runs small. This is a one size item and if you are bigger than a size 12, I would not recommend this particular piece. However, Eva Trends has many other good options, so be sure to head over to their site and do some looking.

20 Days of Christmas - All the Outfits

I know Christmas is officially over, but many of us still have ongoing celebrations into the New Year with family, so it seemed okay to share with you a post that reviewed all the outfits from my 20 Days of Christmas challenge. Did you have a good Christmas day? Ours was fun. It is always a joyous time when both of my girls are at my home with my son-in-law and my grandson. We even got to have a little grandkitty love on Christmas eve and grandpuppy love on Christmas day.

Today I feel pretty whipped. It is a lot of work to do everything that needs to be done as far as gift buying, wrapping and giving, as well as cooking up a storm. Even that part of it isn’t the hardest thing. I think it is after everything is over and you have a mountain of dishes and bags of wrapping paper to take care of. How about you? Are you feeling tired today? Did you have to go right back to work or do you have some time off? If you are a stay at home mom are you finding things to do with your kids that are keeping them occupied? I would think that the day after Christmas, kids would be content to play with their new toys, but I know that is not always the case. Some of you are even packing to go see family, or maybe you are already on the road. We will be heading out on Friday for the weekend with my in-laws.

Here is a review of all the outfits from my 20 Days of Christmas. It was a fun challenge to encourage myself to think outside the box when it came to the clothes I was wearing for the holidays. I tried to keep each outfit in keeping with the season, but still change them up enough that it wasn’t the same thin over and over.

I know many stores are having some great after Christmas sales. Are you braving the stores today, or are you staying at home to relax? Whatever you do, have fun!

20 Days of Christmas - Velvet Floral Top

If you saw my post on Tuesday you already heard me talk about velvet. It seems, for a while, velvet only hung around on fancy drapes and a few relatively expensive clothing items. Now, velvet is every where. I have even seen men’s suit coats made out of velvet.

I mentioned in Tuesday’s post that many of the pieces we now have in our closets are made of a velvet that is manufactured from fabrics like polyester, nylon or viscose. These fabrics give the velvet the characteristics of ease of wear and stretchability. My jacket on Tuesday was more of a traditional velvet without much stretch. This type of velvet is perfect for a more structured piece like a jacket, but for a top we want something that moves with us. Today’s outfit features a piece that is just that.

I have featured this top on the blog before. You can see those posts here and here. This Notations brand top was a thrift store find. I fell in love with the soft, silky fabric, the floral print and the bell sleeves.

For this particular outfit, I thought it would be fun to veer away from the traditional Christmas colors and throw on my blush colored distressed jeans from H & M. These were a clearance find at the end of the summer. I had to make a gradual move into the distressed trend and personally like less rather than more. These jeans are perfect.

I thought gold would be a good choice for contrast with the dark back drop of the floral top.

I grabbed my gold clutch and added a few bracelets in complimentary colors.

These LifeStride ankle boots have a bit of a reddish tinge to them, so I thought they were the perfect accompaniment for the outfit.

I think what makes this outfit work, is the combination of a dark floral print on a velvet fabric, embellished with a classic gold pendant necklace and a gold clutch. You could have chosen black pants or even a burgundy or maroon for a more elegant look. I was going more for biker babe meets princess. Ha, ha.

20 Days of Christmas - Red Velvet Jacket

When you think of Christmas style, what piece in your wardrobe do you think of? Is it a bright green dress, an ugly Christmas sweater or maybe a classic holiday vest with jingle bells and bits of bling? One fabric that always says Christmas and holiday gatherings to me is velvet, or the faux version that we see everywhere these days. The original manufacture of velvet was a complicated and costly process and traditionally was made from silk. Today’s velvet is manufactured at much lower cost, on large machines and is made of various types of fabrics including polyester, nylon, viscose and even spandex. Many of the pieces that make it into our wardrobe in the form of tops are these types and are known as “stretch velvet.”

I found this gorgeous red, velvet jacket at a thrift store and fell in love. The color, the fit and the fact that it is made of velvet compelled me to try it on and once I did, I knew I would be styling it for Christmas and other days throughout the winter. This blazer is a brand called Briggs New York.

I wanted a festive, but casual look with an edge, so I chose my Sonoma camo jeans. I also added a recently purchased long sleeve Croft and Barrow striped tee from Kohl’s. Thanksgiving weekend and the week following are great times to find essentials for yourself while you are shopping for everyone else. Long sleeve tees are sold at great prices, so you can pick up a few. Ha, ha.

I couldn’t make up my mind for jewelry so I went with two necklaces for a layered look. Even though the greens on the necklaces don’t match and the metals are different I think it works.

Since I went with dual necklaces, I went for dual bracelets as well and once again mixed silver and gold. If Burl Ives as Sam the Snowman can do it, why can’t I? I also used my daughter’s minty green clutch. Thank you, Rebecca!

My olive green SO ankle boots are making another appearance. I rolled the hem on my jeans so that the whole boot shows. I like the cut out on these. It makes the boot more interesting and also makes them easier to walk in and easier to get on an off. These have an inside zipper as well. You can see these similar ones at Kohl’s. Right now they are marked down from $49.99 to $34.99. Unfortunately they no longer have olive colored ones. But here are a few olive pairs from Francesca’s, Old Navy and these Sonoma ones at Kohl’s.

One thing I have learned from doing this 20 Days of Christmas Challenge is that many clothing pieces have greater potential than we realize. Who would have ever thought to use camouflage jeans in a Christmas outfit? I’m sure someone thought of it before me, but to me it was new. It has also made me rethink pattern mixing. I love this combination of red stripes with the camo. I also really liked the festive look of last week’s, Eva Trends dress with my plaid shawl/vest. You can see that post here.

20 Days of Christmas - Eva Trends Dress

Many of you know that I worked with Eva Trends earlier this year on a collaboration where I featured three of their clothing pieces over the course of three posts. I was recently contacted by Eva Trends again and they gifted me three more items to feature on my blog.

Today’s post revolves around the Tori A-Line dress, a light weight piece that really would be perfect for spring and summer. Made of a light weight cotton, this piece will see additional wear in the warmer months. However, since I like to expand my thinking and my wardrobe, I thought it would be fun to layer this dress up for a festive, warm Christmas outfit.

I love the fun pattern on this dress. In keeping with many of Eva Trends silhouettes the dress is an a-line with plenty of room. As the material has no stretch, it is helpful that it has a more voluminous outline. I usually don’t like things this long that don’t have a zipper or buttons, but I had no problem pulling this on and off.

Here are a few pictures without the plaid shawl/vest.

For this particular outfit, I layered a long sleeve lace tee under the top and leggings at the bottom. Layering is the perfect way to make those summer weight pieces usable in the colder months.

Accessories included a navy blue fringe necklace, a burgundy cross body bag and my burgundy ankle boots.

You can see in the above picture the dress has a bit of a high-low hem line. I will say, that when you go to the Eva Trends website the proportions on their models compared to our own bodies might be a little skewed. This is a Chinese company and many of their models are smaller than many of us. This dress in the picture I looked at on line, goes down to the model’s ankles. Ha, ha. As you can see that is not the case with me. However, I love it and can’t wait to do more things with it with belts and vests, jackets and jeans.

To complete my look I added a plaid shawl/vest for extra warmth and some fun pattern mixing. I think this dress is a perfect, festive piece for the Holiday season even if it is light weight. That just means more layers, which I love. I love to get creative in my layering, so I think this worked.

20 Days of Christmas - Joy Sweater

I have styled this sweater on the blog before (see that post here) and I think that it is the perfect piece to add to my 20 Days of Christmas challenge. For many who believe that Christmas is celebrated because of Jesus birth, it is a time for joy. However, I think joy is a good word to think about at all different times of year. Webster’s online dictionary defines joy as: the emotion evoked by well-being, success or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.

When I think of joy, I think of something much more permanent and deep than merely obtaining what I desire. I desire all sorts of things, but it is rarely the acquisition of those things that brings true joy. In the same way good fortune or success do not necessarily bring real joy. They may provide momentary happiness, but joy seems to be much more stable than the fleeting happiness that success or things may bring.

I would have worn tights that matched my skirt and shoes if I had them, but when I tried these on, I thought, why not? Both the skirt and shoes are more maroon, while the hose are more burgundy. To me it just seems festive all the way around.

This sweater is thrifted and Old Navy brand. It is fairly light weight, so I felt the need to add a blouse underneath. I chose my thrifted Jaclyn Smith piece that I have featured on the blog before, for another holiday season. You can see that post here. The thing I like about these silkier types of blouses, is that they add a layer without adding bulk. Plus they have that shimmery look to them, which is perfect for the holidays.

I found this unique necklace on one of my thrift runs. I really like the colors and the design.

I’ve had this maroon pleated skirt for a while now. It was originally from Kohl’s and is AB Studio brand. To keep the outfit more upscale I grabbed my pewter sparkly clutch and added my thrifted Bandolino heels.

Figuring out a festive look does not always mean green and red or silver and gold. Sometimes it is easier to find one festive piece, like a sweater and then build the rest of your outfit around that. A pleated skirt will always kick an outfit up a notch and then adding heels and a sparkly bag or jewelry is all you need to be ready for a Christmas get together.

20 Days of Christmas - Plaid Pants

Every now and then I have to get outside my comfort box. I have never really liked wearing things that draw attention to my lower half. Especially tight fitting, brightly colored pieces. I prefer a-line dresses to body con styles. If you don’t know, body con is more of a form fitting dress. I prefer dark wash jeans to lighter washes and feel most comfortable in jeans rather than leggings. I don’t wear leggings as pants, or if I do, I have my bum covered. Anyway, when I saw these crazy, red, plaid pants at Target on the clearance rack, I immediately thought of my Christmas challenge.

Those of you who regularly follow me, know I have been doing a monthly column called Outside the Box. These have been posts that I have done to try to challenge myself to get out of my typical fashion mentality. Let’s face it, we all like to be comfortable. Some women are comfortable in heels and dresses. While I can do that, it is not what I turn to when I want to feel secure. My go to, as you know are jeans and cozy sweaters or flannel shirts. But I also know that part of getting older is the urge to get stuck in a rut and not be willing to learn or try new things, thus the idea of getting outside the box.

These plaid pants do not have any green in them, so they will be easily styled with other colors, but I thought they were perfect when paired with a newer Croft & Barrow v-neck cable knit sweater and a thrifted blazer.

This blazer is actually meant to have a double breasted look, but I am too big to button it in that manner. However, when I saw it, it was the buttons on each side that made me want to buy it, that and the color. I think wearing it open, using the buttons for a decoration, works just as well. Since it is more of a forest green, I felt that it keeps the outfit from being too over the top with color.

I decided on silver for my accessories and was excited to remember this large silver pendant necklace that closely resembles a snowflake. That and my SO silver flats and a small silver clutch complete the ensemble.

I think this outfit is festive and fun and would work well for a Christmas office party, or a lunch date with your girlfriends. Would you wear a pair of pants like this? How do you like to dress up for a Christmas party?

20 Days of Christmas - Fairisle Sweater

Nothing says winter better than a Fair Isle Sweater. Fair Isle is one of the Shetland islands and it is from this area that the familiar pattern of knitting, using multiple colors came into play in the fashion world. The patterns became popular in 1921 when the Prince of Wales wore Fair Isle sweaters in public. You can see examples of true Fair Isle pieces by visiting this website, Mati Ventrillon. Her story is interesting and the pieces she creates unique and beautiful. It is is worth taking time to peruse her site. If you have the resources and are able to wear wool, one of these sweaters would be a once in a life time investment.

Obviously, my sweater was made on a machine at a factory and is strictly man made materials, but finding this Chap’s brand sweater at Kohl’s on the clearance rack last year was a win for me. I cannot wear wool, as it makes me itch and the price for one of Mati’s beautiful hand made pieces tops off at about $250. Since I don’t live on a chilly island north of Scotland, I think I’ll stick with my cheap fake. Ha, ha.

I was a bit at a loss this morning with taking pictures. My weekend was so busy and then I didn’t feel the greatest yesterday, so I didn’t get my pictures taken after work as I had planned. Frankly, I forgot. My brain has turned to its usual SAD slush! Ugg. Weeks of clouds takes it’s toll and while we had one sunny day on Sunday, one day is not enough to bring me completely out of the seasonal funk.

Anyway, it was so overcast this morning, I knew it was going to take more time than I had to get my camera to a setting that would take a decent picture outside, so I opted for my phone. Lots of these turned out fuzzy, so I apologize for the not so great photos.

Here is a close up of the pretty red, white and blue pattern. While typically that color combination is patriotic, on this sweater it seems more festive and Christmas ready rather than Fourth of July. I love the dark navy with the lighter more silvery blue and the red almost borders on pink.

This fun silver fringe necklace is one of my favorites and I like the way it pulls out the silvery threads in the sweater pattern. The other reason I like this necklace is if you get nervous or bored it is fun to fiddle with the fringe! Ha, ha.

Since I wanted to keep the outfit casual I chose to pair it with my silver sneakers which are a new addition to my shoe pile. I found these at a local department store on clearance. Today was the first time I wore them for a long period of time. They weren’t too uncomfortable, although by the time I was done shopping with my daughter at the mall, I was starting to feel a few spots that were rubbing. Oh well, I am sure they will still get plenty of use at my part time job and other occasions where I don’t have to do a ton of walking.

I think this works for a very casual Christmas outfit and the sweater could easily be dressed up with a cute pencil skirt or even a pleated skirt with heels. You could also go for gold, instead of silver for your accessories to change it up a bit.

One last picture just for laughs and of course this one turned out perfect! Ha, ha. Isn’t that the way of things?

I was looking out the window and saw a huge flat bed truck with a full load of wooden palettes doing a U-turn in the middle of our street. It was one of those, “All righty then,” moments. Ha, ha.

20 Days of Christmas - Red and Green

It is the fourth day of my 20 Days of Christmas challenge and it has been fun to pull out some of my Christmas themed pieces and think about how to put them together in a way that is fun and stylish. I also wanted to revisit some of the traditional holiday color combinations and see how I could combine them in a fresh, trendy way.

Today’s outfit uses the two age old Christmas colors, red and green. Greenery has been used in decorating for centuries to brighten up the long, drab, winter months and is a reminder of the return of spring. Red, while associated with holly berries, is also in the Christian tradition, a reminder of the blood of Christ.

I started with this LuLaRoe maxi skirt which I have styled before on the blog, here. When I initially got this skirt, I thought it had a bit of a tropical vibe, but they celebrate Christmas in tropical places too, right? I decided to add this 3/4 length sweater to brighten up the outfit, though I think a green top with red accessories would have worked as well. The sweater is Croft and Barrow.

To make the look a little bit more youthful and updated I decided to top the whole outfit with my Mudd olive utility vest. I also thought carrying the green velvet cross body bag added a bit of trendy textural interest. I’ve gotten a number of compliments on this bag that I found on the clearance rack at Meijer, last spring.

As you can see we had some snow, so I felt my Croft and Barrow knee high black boots were in order for the day. I also had on black leggings under the skirt for added warmth. I was pretty cozy all day at work and even when my daughter and I took her dogs for a walk. I also had a 3/4 length tee under my sweater. Layers, upon layers. It’s winter time.

The finishing touch was this green and gold two layer necklace. The green went perfectly with the green in the skirt.

I really like these LuLaRoe maxi’s, although I think I had heard they were phasing them out of their product line. It looks like they now have a long, pleated maxi skirt. Whatever the case, it is easy to make your summer maxi skirts winter wearable by adding heavy tights, or leggings and boots.

20 Days of Christmas - Slip Dress

I have seen many fashion bloggers do series that cover a period of days. Spring and fall fashion are popular themes for many of these series. I thought it would be fun to do a series revolving around Christmas. Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love the decorations, the music and movies, the food and gatherings, and the gift giving, but even more important is the meaning that this holiday has for those of us who call ourselves Christians. This is the time we celebrate our Savior’s birth.

That being said, I love to dress for the occasion. I don’t own a boat load of ugly Christmas sweaters, but I do have a few kitschy tees that are fun to get out each Christmas. In addition, I love to pair the colors that we typically think of at Christmas time, like red and green, in different ways that look classy, but still festive. This year, for this particular challenge, I also wanted to bring in some color combinations like silver and gold (I hear Burl Ives singing) and white with blue (which makes me think of Frozen), as well as classic black with gold or cream. It is that last color combination that made it to the blog today. Today’s outfit revolves around a black and cream slip dress. I found this little number while thrifting. I have seen numerous bloggers style slip dresses and have always thought it was not for me. However, it was always simmering at the back of my mind that if I found the right deal, I would get outside my box and give it a try, thus today’s thrifted dress. A slip dress, simply put, is a slip that can be worn as a dress. For the most part slip dresses are made of a heavier weight fabric than a typical slip that you would wear under a dress, so that they can be worn out in public without fear of being see through.

What makes this a slip dress? The spaghetti straps, the light weight, silky fabric and the fit and flair style. A slip dress will typically not be big and flowing. This one was a bit tight on me and I would have felt more comfortable in a larger size, but when you thrift shop, you have to go with what you get. I just have to remind myself to stand up straight so my bulges aren’t as obvious. Ha, ha.

I added a black turtleneck under my slip dress, because, dang it, it is cold out there! I also threw on this fringed cape that I got from Chico’s. A little gold and pearl jewelry helped to up the class factor.

I chose the burgundy suede fringe bag to bring in a pop of color, as well as to tie in with the boho feel of the whole outfit.

Black textured tights over a gray pair of tights adds warmth and interest and I finished off the look with my black suede boots.

Hanging Out with the Happiness Boutique

I was contacted by a German company called Happiness Boutique wanting to do a collaboration with me. I pulled this outfit together just before I flew out the door to go to take pictures at my daughter’s house. I wanted to put together a look that was both warm and fun and that could be worn for a Thanksgiving day get together. I also wanted to think outside the box, since I wanted the jewelry to take center stage.

The two pieces I chose were a necklace and a bracelet. The necklace has more of a traditional gold finish and the bracelet is more of a rose gold.

I chose this double leaf pendant because I like that it acts like both a pendant and a fringe necklace. The leaves are very cute and add a unique textural element to the outfit. There is also a small dark colored jewel at the point from which the two leaf chains hang. This vintage feather necklace is a wonderfully delicate piece that makes a statement all on its own.

I chose to wear my new sweater from Eden Fashion Boutique as a solid backdrop for the necklace. Wanting the necklace to make a statement, I was afraid it would get lost in a print blouse, but any solid back ground really makes this pop.

The wavy bracelet in rose gold, is another statement piece. I love the wavy design, but also the added texture on the one loop. This shimmery, shiny piece is going to be making regular appearances throughout the holidays.
