Spring Outfit with Orange Pants

Just like I did for the blue pants, I wanted to show you a new outfit with my Worthington orange pants. For this one I focused on a work appropriate look. With many people finally returning to their jobs I thought it would be a good time to feature an outfit that would be perfect for the office, especially as air conditioners come back on.

I wish I would have thought to get close up of the details on this thrifted Maurices vest. I snatched it up, because I don’t have any summer weight white vests and I thought the eyelet detail and the texturing on the pockets made this such a unique piece. It has the utility vibe with the patch pockets and drawstring, but is dressier.

You can also see my H&M button down top. I found this one on the clearance rack a few years ago and just loved the botanical print with its flowers, butterflies and birds. I thought tying the front shirt tails made for a more summery look, but one that remains work appropriate. I also like the soft contrast between the stark white of the vest and the more off white of the blouse.

I added a double layered purple necklace and a few purple metal bangles to pull out the purple in the top.

I opted for more neutral shoes and bag. I thought the outfit had enough color with the bright orange pants and the flora print in the top. The neutral accessories give it not only a summer feel, but a polished and professional look. If I ever go back to an office job, I would definitely wear this. My bag you have seen on the blog before and is from Walmart and George brand. My perforated peep toe sandals are Sonoma brand from Kohl’s.

Why You Should have a Pair of Colored Pants - Orange

I thought I would do one more week on colored pants. This denim wearing diva, never imagined in all my years that I would learn to love brightly colored pants, but I have. I do remember when I was young, being a child of the sixties and seventies, I had a pair of bright red, cuffed bell bottom pants that I loved to wear to school. I am not sure what drew me away from the bright colored bottoms, except maybe that feeling of not wanting to be noticed or seen. I still struggle with that bit, but now I don’t worry so much about what other people are thinking or looking at. That is not my problem. I do try to dress modestly, but I love my bright colors and think they help to make me happy. This week I want to focus on my orange pants.

These orange pants were a clearance purchase at JC Penney about four years ago. They are Worthington brand, have a side zipper and an extra seam towards the front, giving the leg a long, lean line and less bulk around the middle, for a more streamlined look. The waist sits near my natural waist, so a little less of the spare tire problem. Here are past posts from the blog where I used these pants.

Outfit 1 - Orange with Sheer Light Blue Top

I love the summery vibe of this outfit. The light blue, sheer top over the white tank combined with the bright orange pants seems very fitting for dinner under the palm trees at a tropical resort.

Outfit 2 - Orange Pants with a Dress

This is one of my favorite outfits with these pants. It just happened that I found this dress at H&M and that the orange in the dress matched perfectly with the pants. I have no problem with women wearing shorter dresses. I know lots of women who will wear them with bike shorts underneath, so nothing is revealed if they blow up or if they bend over. I personally do not have the legs to wear a shorter dress, so wearing pants with a dress has become something I do more often. It is a fun way to display a short piece without any worry of revealing veiny legs or other leg flaws.

Outfit 3 - Orange with Bright Purple and Gray

Who would have thought to pair bright purple with orange? Well, I did and I think it turned out perfectly. I think the light gray jacket over the top helps to pull this whole look together. The pretty leaf necklace ties the orange pants to the purple top. This is a trick you can do to bring cohesiveness to an outfit that might seem a little outside the color box.

Outfit 4 - Orange with Dark Green

Once again, you see a color block pattern, but one that is complimented by the printed accessories in the form of a leaf print scarf and a Vera Bradley tote bag. Since this was a more casual look, I added a hem roll to the bottom of the pants. This would be a great outfit to wear for an early fall shopping trip.

Outfit 5 - Orange with Marled Black Vest

Vests are a great way to transition from cooler seasons to warmer ones and warmer ones to cooler ones. They keep our cores warm, but our arms from being bound under bulky sweaters or coats. The focal point of this outfit, was not the pants, but the scarf, but I drew on the colors in the scarf to create the complete look.

Outfit 6 - Orange with an Asymmetrical Vest

The solid colored orange pants are the grounding point in this outfit that is filled with busy prints. The floral tee, the open weave asymmetrical vest and the patchwork bag would probably be too much, if the pants were also printed. The bright orange once again announces that summer is just around the corner.

Outfit 7 - Orange with Teal, Gray and Yellow

Here we are, back to fall. Orange is a no brainer for fall outfits, but we often reach for rust or darker versions of orange. However, I think I have shown that this bright orange is perfect spring through fall. You probably could even dress it up for winter with a chunky fisherman sweater and some suede ankle boots. This particular pair of pants is lighter weight, so if I wore them in the winter, I might put a pair of tights underneath.

So what do you think of orange pants? For all practical purposes I think more women would choose a bright blue pair rather than the orange, but what I wanted to show you is that there are so many different ways to style a bright colored pair of pants and still have a classy outfit that you can wear for a night out with the hubby, a lunch with friends or to a summer picnic. Pick your favorite color and get a pair of bright colored pants now.

Winter Trends - My Take on Quilting

I have always loved handmade quilts. I think they are beautiful testaments to the women who work on them, tirelessly sewing, piecing together and creating a work of art in the form of a wall hanging or full sized quilt for a bed. When we went to the fair, back when that was allowed, I used to love to visit the hall where all the quilts were displayed. I always thought it would be cool to be part of a group of women who worked together to create these masterful pieces.

The winter trend of quilting is, once again, more present in outerwear, than in every day clothing. However, I wanted to show you something other than my quilted outerwear vests, so I reached for an older piece that for some reason I do not wear very often and a new piece that I just got. The blatant truth is, I have way too many clothes and one of these days I need to really pare things down, but for the time being, I would like to wear more of the things that I don’t wear as often.

This jacket is a new purchase from Christopher & Banks. It was marked down and then had another percent off. I like that it is light weight and on the day I took these photos it was quite cold and it kept me toasty warm. The shiny, olive green color was a nice addition to my outerwear wardrobe and this is a jacket that I will be able to wear fall, winter and spring when the temps are still cold. It appears, that Christopher & Banks, while closing all their brick and mortar stores, is still going to have on online presence. I know they still have these available on their website, so check it out.

The other quilted piece I want to show you is the gray vest I have on underneath the coat. This vest is also a Christopher & Banks purchase, but from a number of years ago. The quilting detail is much more intricate and unique on the front portions of the vest.

My fun printed pants were a recent thrift find from when my girls took me thrift shopping on my birthday. I saw these on the rack and I have always had this thing for plaid pants. I threw them in my cart thinking there was no way they’d fit, but why not try them on. I was so happy that they did. These are a brand called cabi jeans. Once again, a brand I am not familiar with, but they are a current online retailer, so you can check out their website here.

I will be able to use these jeans all year round and I am already thinking of spring outfit styled with a chambray shirt.

The next photo shows, not only my beaded necklace, but the gray, Worthington turtleneck sweater I wore under the vest. There is nothing like a cozy turtleneck to keep you warm in the winter months. This was the same one I styled a few weeks ago in my post, A Dickens’ Christmas - The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

The only other accessories I had besides my beads were my faux suede boots and my gray convertible bag. These navy SO ankle boots have been on repeat this winter since I purchased them online from Kohl’s. My Evan Picone bag was a thrift find. I like that it can be carried as a top handle tote bag and also as a smaller cross body bag.

Do you have any quilted pieces in your closet besides the comforter you throw on the bed? Quilting is hit or miss. Most of us have heard of Vera Bradley and I almost pulled out one of my tote bags, but it didn’t really go with what I was wearing. I do like many of her things, but it has to be the right pattern and style for me and I usually just look for them at thrift stores. I’ve included some of her products in the shopping links.

A Dickens' Christmas - The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come

These photos were taken in a local graveyard. No disrespect was intended to the families of those laid to rest in its borders, nor to the spirits who might walk its paths.

Probably the spookiest of Dickens’ Christmas spirits is the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. This specter is darker and more formidable than either of the previous phantasms. In both of my favorite movie versions of the story, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is personified as a dark, flowing, faceless creature who stands head and shoulders above Ebenezer Scrooge and who never speaks. He simply points his long, skeletal like fingers to what he wants Ebenezer to see.

When I started thinking about an outfit to typify this gruesome ghoul, I knew I wanted to go with gray colors. I thought gray, rather than a stark black spoke more to the shaded veil our futures seem to be. No one can know the future, but God alone, and I personally would rather not have the so called privilege of knowing what is to be, except that blessed assurance of life with Him, after I die.

There was no doubt, I wanted these pictures, done in a graveyard. The most telling scene in the movie version of A Christmas Carol, is when the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come brings Scrooge to a lonely, forsaken graveyard. In his creepy, speechless manner, the Ghost points to a specific, unattended grave, which in overwhelming despair, Ebenezer wipes aside the snow and sees his own name engraved on the stone.

I wanted my look to be work appropriate, so I chose pieces that created a classic monochrome look, but still gave the illusion of movement. I also wanted the layers.

My plaid Style & Co trousers have been around quite a while. I honestly can’t remember if I bought these new or if I got them at a thrift store. Style & Co are still sold at Macy’s.

My gray turtleneck is Worthington brand. Once again, I have had this piece for years and I don’t remember if I got it new at JCPenney’s, or if I thrifted it. Not only is my memory in need of help, so is my waistline. I know the above picture is not the most flattering, but ladies, this is the real me at the current moment. I have a spare tire or maybe two, and I am probably in the worst shape I have been in, in years, due to achey joints, not eating well and not enough exercise. I can’t blame it all on the pandemic, as much as I would like to. Most of it is my very undisciplined nature. Maybe you can relate. I hope so. I really don’t want to feel like I am the only one in this rocky boat. Ha, ha. I am really hoping, that once this busy holiday time is over, I can try to implement a few changes. Never give up!

The light weight shrug that I put over the turtleneck is also Worthington brand. This piece I did buy new at Penney’s. It has an asymmetrical hem, so the longer front pieces can be tied, to create a different look. You can see how I wore it tied with a black maxi dress.

My long, wide scarf was not only a purply gray color, but it had bugs on it, which somehow seemed fitting with the grave theme.

You know me, I had to try keeping in character. Ha, ha. I do look like a fitting specter to haunt this old graveyard, especially in black and white.

Since this was meant to be an outfit, one could actually wear for work, or for a night out, I did have to style it with a few accessories. I chose silver and gray to maintain the monochrome look. A small silver clutch, to give it a bit of bling, a three strand statement necklace and my dark gray Impo ankle boots completed the look.

A monochrome look in any color can be an easy, fun and interesting way to change up your wardrobe and still look like you put thought and effort into your outfit. Monochrome doesn’t have to be an exact match, but just be pieces with the same color hues and tones. Adding texture is also the perfect way to make a single color scheme look go from boring to fabulous.

Thrifted Thursday - Neal's Ugly Sweater - The Santa Claus

I don’t know how many of you have seen Tim Allen’s The Santa Claus, or any of its consecutive sequels, but it is a fun, family friendly movie (it has a little bit of swearing), that I love to watch every year. In the movie, Tim Allen plays Scott Calvin, (note the initials) a divorced dad who, believe it or not, works as an executive for a toy company. His son Charlie, visits on weekends and for the predetermined holidays. This year, Charlie gets to spend Christmas Eve with his dad, much to his chagrin. Scott doesn’t make a huge effort as a single dad to make things enjoyable for his son, from his lame attempt at cooking a turkey dinner, which he ends up having to put out with a fire extinguisher, to a last ditch attempt to feed Charlie at a Denny’s (along with a number of single dads with their kids).

When it is time for bed, Tim reads the classic tale, T’was the Night Before Christmas, and it is not long after that we witness Santa falling from Tim’s roof and the comedic tale of how Scott Calvin, toy executive, becomes Santa Clause, complete with reindeer, weight gain and elves at the North Pole.

The inspiration for today’s outfit comes from Scott’s nemesis, Neal, who is the new husband of his ex-wife. Neal is a psychologist, and throughout the movie we see him trying to explain away the things that Charlie saw on their quick trip to the North Pole and Scott’s changing demeanor and physique. Neal, played by Judge Reinhold, is a typical 90’s professional trying to look classy in his crazy patterned sweaters and khaki pants. Here are two scenes from the movie, just to show you a couple of Neal’s sweaters.

The funny thing was, when I got this idea, and started looking for these types of sweaters, I found one almost exactly like the top one, but it was way to big. As you can see, I ended up with a striped version, that while, not quite as crazy as Neal’s still qualifies, for a 90’s casual professional look.

This men’s Mercer Street Studio sweater, which I found at a local thrift shop a few weeks ago is obviously a large size, but because it is so comfy and cozy, I knew I would be able to use it for just hanging out on a casual day.

You’ve seen this thrifted, Worthington, faux leather skirt on the blog before. You can see how I styled it with a long vest, a yellow sweater, a lace top, a floral top, and a gray tunic sweater. I tried several other pieces with this sweater, but in the end opted for the more streamlined silhouette. I thought, if I were a psychologist and had my own office, this might be something I would wear.

Because the sweater is busy enough, I kept my accessories simple. My silver pendant looks similar to a Celtic knot. This was another thrifted piece.

I found this Scarleton bag at the thrift store as well. I didn’t really have a solid black bag, so when I saw this one, I grabbed it. A black bag is always a classic and easy choice for make an outfit look more dressed up and professional.

My black, buckle, Nine West loafers were also a thrift store find. You just can’t beat a second hand store for all sorts of fashion treasures. Again, I used my heavier weight black tights to keep my legs cozy and produce a sleeker line.

I appreciate every one of you who subscribe and regularly follow my blog. I know I am not always the most consistent blogger, but I do this as a hobby and don’t make a living at it. I want to bring content to you that you will find interesting without lots of adds or pressure to buy things. Christmas is a busy time and if you are like me, you already have a list of presents to buy. The links I offer you are merely possible ideas to get a similar looks to my own, but I am happy if most of you are finding your pieces at thrift stores. It really helps, not only our own pocket books, but our planet as well. Repurpose and reuse.

Pantone Spring/Summer - 2020 - Flame Orange, Blossom and Cuban Sand

Today’s colors are bright and light and make me think of late night bon fires and light pink peonies. The classic color of Cuban Sand makes me want to take my shoes off and walk on the beach. The combination of these three colors together makes for the perfect summer look, complete with my own version of print mixing and boho vibrations.

This very casual look revolves around my bright orange Worthington pants from JCPenney. I have styled these slimming skinny trousers many times on the blog before. You can see them with a dress, a sheer summery top, a dark green cardigan, and a multi print scarf. They are such a different color from what I normally wear and I like that I have been able to use them for so many different outfits. The fact that they are skinnies makes pairing them with a dress a fun option that I never would have thought of before.

My fringe, asymmetrical, open weave vest has been on the blog before too. You can see it styled with a pair of checked ankle pants. Say What brand is sold by a number of stores including Kohl’s, Target and Macy’s. I am not sure that this brand is as popular any more. Here is a fun shot of me twirling. In the second picture you can see the print at the top of the vest and notice the print mixing.

My thrifted, floral Croft and Barrow tee was really the inspiration for the outfit. Seeing as it had the orange and the light pink, I knew I could make this work. I am a sucker for floral anything. It is an easy place to find inspiration for an outfit and you don’t even really have to worry about accessorizing if you don’t want to.

You can see my Blossom colored necklace in the above pic as well. Another way I wear it is to double it so it looks more like a layered piece closer to my neck. I also chose a few light pink beaded bracelets to go with the necklace and bring more of the blossom color out.

I went for my George bag again from Walmart. While it is not exactly Cuban Sand, the patchwork mix goes well with the tan colors in the top and the vest.

My little thong sandals were a thrift find a few years ago. I don’t wear sandals all that much, but I wanted to give you all a feeling of summer. I would wear them a lot more, but I am very self-conscious about my bunions and my varicose veins. I know, I know! Get over yourself. Ha, ha. I’ll keep trying to push myself out of those boxes that confine me, but on the other hand we should choose to wear what makes us feel good about ourselves. Right?

Transitional Spring Outfit

Before I get to my Pantone series I decided to do a few more posts featuring transitional spring outfits. If you are unsure what a transitional outfit is, let me explain by first giving you the definition of the word transition. Webster’s online dictionary gives several definitions for this word:

- passage from one state, stage, subject, or place to another

- a movement, development, or evolution from one form, stage, or style to another

- a musical passage leading from one section of a piece to another

There are a few other definitions which are not as pertinent to our fashion content. The second definition seems to be the one that suits our needs the best, but I really like the third definition. Aren’t we a musical score, written by an Almighty Creator? The seasonal changes in our natural world and in the fashion world are akin to a piece of music changing and modulating from one section to another.

When it pertains to fashion we enjoy moving from one season to another just as much as we enjoy the change of the nakedness of winter to the covering bloom of spring. We enjoy moving our heavy, dark winter clothes to the back of the closet, or the bins in the basement and pulling out our bright, light weight tops and fun colorful maxi dresses. What often becomes a problem is that period of time when winter has not yet loosened its grip and the chill in the spring air is too cool for our light weight layers. The transition is this time period we, in the midwest, now find ourselves in. We still need our sweaters and our booties, but we crave our bright colors and layers that allow the sun to caress our skin.

Today’s outfit is another attempt at styling a look around a scarf. I have so many pretty, colorful scarves, so I thought why not use them as focal points for outfits.

The beauty of styling an outfit around a colorful scarf like this is it is so easy to do. This scarf has several colors including a light and dark pink, a light purple, a light blue and the orange. I wanted to stay away from pink for this outfit so I chose the orange, light blue and purple to focus on.

My Worthington orange pants have made many appearances on the blog. You can see them worn with a green sweater, a floral dress, and a print top. Worthington is a JC Penney brand and I find them to be a good brand if you are looking for durable, decent fitting work/dress pants.

My light blue Sonoma tee was a thrift find. I typically wear these crew neck or v-neck types of tees as layering pieces under sweaters or long sleeve button ups during the winter, but for a transitional outfit like this it was perfect to wear on its own, or in this case with a vest.

The above picture gives you a closer view of the scarf. It is a large square, which I folded into a triangle. The point point of the triangle is at the front. The two other long, narrow points fold towards the back and then around to the front. I tied those into a double knot over the bib part of the triangle.

I chose this open weave black marled vest to go with the black lines in the scarf. This vest is Croft and Barrow brand from the Kohl’s clearance racks a number of years ago. (I am not sure what was going on with my pants, but please don’t judge my crotch ailment — ha, ha! Probably because they are a little tight, bleh!)

This Nicole Miller bag was another Kohl’s clearance find a few years ago. It has appeared on the blog numerous times. I chose it for its purplish color. I also opted for a few purple bangle bracelets to add to the purple vibe of the scarf.

I chose my tasseled Dana Buchman loafers as I thought they went with the vest and as you learned earlier this year, loafers are back in.

Seeing Red - Red with Leopard - Leopard Print Blazer

I have always loved the combination of leopard print with red and burgundy, so for this outfit, I chose a leopard print blazer to go with a pair of red trousers. If you think you just can’t wear red pants, never say never. It really isn’t so much about color, but about fit. As you saw in last Thursday’s post I wore a pair of bright red jeans and while the fit around my middle was a little tight, the fit through the hips and legs was perfect. Don’t say no to a bright color on your bottom, until you at least give it a try. Be bold! Be confident! Color is our friend.

I will be showing you a few rather funny pictures in a bit. The sun was bright, which I absolutely needed, but after so many days of gloomy gray my eyes were having a hard time adjusting to the brilliance. Even in this picture, my forehead is showing its wrinkles as I squint and my eyes all but disappear. Ha, ha.

These Worthington trousers are a bit too long and I probably should hem them up, but who has time to sew? Actually, the other day, I did get out my thread and needle to fix one of my hubby’s shirts. I have a few other things in the mending pile, so maybe I will add these to the list. Worthington is a brand I have bought numerous times over the years, either from JC Penney or thrift stores. They seem to be a great trouser for times when you need something other than jeans. For instance these make great office attire. They are stretchy, but never look wrinkled or faded. They are medium weight so are good for any season and they are easy to take care of. They also drape well. I have several pairs that I have styled on the blog before. You can see this red pair with a long button up tunic and a open weave light brown sweater.

This gold dot blouse seemed to be natural choice to keep this outfit looking classy. I decided to tuck it in, but you could also leave it out. These days to tuck or not to tuck isn’t even a question any more. It really is up to you and is acceptable either way. This is a brand called Monteau and I got it a few years ago at Macy’s on the clearance rack.

I got this leopard print, Libby Edelman blazer, at JC Penney on the clearance rack. You can see how I styled this before on the blog, here and here. It is more of an unstructured piece and the sleeves are a little bit wonky, almost like they are meant to be worn rolled up rather than down, but I make it work. Have you ever bought a piece like that, where it had some sort of weird hem or problem, yet you make it work because you love the piece? I figure, it is a good reminder of who we are in God’s eyes. We all are a little wonky and have our issues, but He loves us anyway.

Gold was my color of choice for the accessories including a clutch, bracelet and layered statement necklace.

For shoes I wore my thrifted Nurture brand mid calf boots. They have a lower heel and the pants would have draped better with a higher heel.

I promise you a few silly images, so here they are.

I think in the first picture my face is trying to adjust to the sun. The second picture I don’t know what to do with my feet and the third picture I look like I am sinking into the ground or am bent over because I hurt my back. Ha, ha. Anyway, I thought you might get a good laugh out of them.

This one is a little better. Ha, ha.

Seeing Red - Red with Tan - Velvet Jacket

As I was preparing for this series, I knew there were certain pieces I wanted to feature. Today’s red velvet jacket is one of those. This thrifted Briggs NY blazer is such a fun and unique piece. I originally got it as a holiday blazer when I was doing my 20 Days of Christmas series back in 2018. You can see the post featuring that Christmas outfit here. I wanted to be able to style this jacket in another way and what better than to wear it for the month of February. Whether you celebrate Valentines Day or are wearing red for Heart Disease awareness month, a red jacket, or blazer is a great way to do it.

Let me share a style secret with you. I typically don’t button or zip my sweaters or blazers. If I am using a piece as outerwear, then I do want to be able to zip or button it. More often though, I add a jacket or sweater as a layering piece for warmth, but leave it open, so the under layer, whether it be a graphic tee, button up or a textured sweater like the one in this outfit, can be seen. That also allows any necklaces or scarves to be an added focal point in the outfit. This blazer is too tight, but it fits well through the shoulders and back so I bought it, knowing this is exactly how I would wear it. The fashion gurus might say I am committing a crime worthy of jail, but I don’t care. After all, part of the reason many of us blog about fashion is to remind people to wear what makes you feel good and is completely you.

Just like the red and black of last week’s post, red and tan also make a wonderful statement. My tan Sonoma sweater is older than the hills. I don’t wear it too often, but it goes with so many things and was the perfect topper for this recently thrifted Worthington skirt. I like that the sweater is an open weave, so I can layer any cardi under it and you’ll be able to see the color. For this outfit I just did white, but it would have worked well with black or red too.

I fell in love with this skirt when I saw it. I have way too many skirts and don’t wear them very often at all, but I like having them, if just for the sake of showing you outfits on the blog. Plus, I like to have choices. My problem is, I have too many choices. Ha, ha. Anyway, the skirt is easy on and easy off with an elastic waist. It is a medium weight swingy knit. I wasn’t sure about the pattern at first, and even when I put it on and looked in the mirror I wasn’t sure if it would make me look too wide on the bottom, but I think the diagonal pattern works well for both narrow and fat bottomed girls. ( Do you hear Freddy Mercury singing, “Fat bottomed girls make the rockin’ world go round”?)

I found this fun necklace on clearance at Meijer. The pretty leaf is what sold me.

I also chose my bracelet with the gray stone and my silver clutch.

The same suede Aerosoles that I wore in last week’s post are making another appearance. I opted for the black hose for two reasons. With the black shoes, they make my legs look longer and thinner. In addition, the fact that it is still winter and they were a heavier weight seemed like a good choice.

Seeing Red - Thrifted Thursday - Burgundy Skirt

Today’s column is the first of a new one I am going to feature the first Thursday of the Month. Since I am such an avid thrifter and because I see so many other thrifters featuring their treasures on a regular basis, I thought it would be fun to come up with an outfit once a month that is entirely thrifted. I thought this outfit fit into my February theme of Seeing Red because it features my burgundy faux leather skirt.

This skirt is Worthington brand. I have styled this on the blog before. You can see it styled with a velvet floral top here; a burgundy lace top here; a floral top here; and a gray sweater tunic here. This just goes to show, a faux leather skirt is a versatile option for your wardrobe. It works great as a work wear piece or dressed up for a classy night out.

I love this cognac yellow, cowl neck sweater. It is Charlotte Russe brand. Since it is a wider, more relaxed fit, I decided to do the front tuck. I have seen numerous vloggers, (video bloggers) who use this method to create a waist line on an outfit, with a more bulky or voluminous piece. Since I added a jacket over the top, leaving the back untucked was no big deal, as you can see below.

This olive green jacket could be a shirt dress, a very short one. Ha, ha. However, my days of mini skirts are long gone, so I am using it like a light weight jacket. This is Fashion Bug brand. With its large square pockets, metals snaps and casing belt, it definitely falls into the utility jacket category.

I kept my accessories simple. The fun brass and bead flower pendant I found thrifting a few years ago. The cognac, leather, Fossil cross body bag is perfect for carrying the essentials when shopping. I could have went with some cognac colored ankle boots, but opted for the black ANA loafer heels instead. I thought it made the outfit look a little more professional and office ready. My dark colored hose are the only thing not thrifted in my outfit.

Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2019 - Cranberry and Chicory Coffee

Hi everyone. The days are flying by and we are almost to Halloween. I haven’t even gotten out my decorations yet! That is how far behind I am. Maybe I should just skip Halloween and start decorating for Christmas. All the stores are doing it. Ha, ha . Well, I don’t think I’ll get that crazy, but this time of year does seem to go awfully fast. Do you get that feeling?

Today’s colors are what the Pantone Color Institute label a “vital red that adds a pungent punch to the palette,” and a “robust and tasteful” brown that, “introduces an element of heartiness.”

I was able to pull these pieces from my closet and decided to add the off white cardi that mimics Rutabaga from the London classic color palette.

This Cranberry cami was a recent thrift purchase. Most of my camis are pretty tight and I wear them as layering pieces under long sleeve tops and sweaters. I do not wear them to be seen, but it occurred to me that it would be nice to have something I could have more visible under an open sweater. It is Maurice’s brand. I am becoming a fan of Maurice’s. I see pieces every so often at thrift stores and recently I bought what has become one of my favorite pairs of jeans on the clearance rack. What really drew me to this cami was the pretty lace detailing.

These trousers are Worthington brand from JCPenney. Do you know how hard it is to find brown slacks? Now maybe that has changed. I have seen rust, and that more yellowy brown called cognac, but real brown is hard to find, especially a dark brown like this one.

The off white open front cardigan is Chaps brand and another clearance rack find from Kohl’s. Chaps has some nice pieces, but they do have a higher price point than I would normally pay, thus my reasoning for waiting for them to go on clearance. If I thought a particular piece is really worth paying full price for, I would buy it, but for the most part there isn’t anything that I absolutely have to have. I could shop my closet for months and come up with all sorts of new combinations, because I have so many clothes. Truth!

I kept the accessories minimal with my gold leopard print medallion necklace, a few gold bracelets, my snakeskin clutch, a brown belt, and brown boots. I thought this was a good outfit for complimenting with animal prints.

These are two colors that I can get behind. I love the combination and think these two work well together. What do you think? Do you have any of these colors in your closet? Do you wear camis a lot? Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2019 - Orange Tiger and Eden

I mentioned in Tuesday’s post on Sugar Almond and Dark Cheddar, that not everyone can or wants to wear orange. I love orange, but it has to be the right shade for me to wear it near my face. Some oranges make me look sallow or washed out. Today’s colors are bold and what caused me to put these two colors together, was the contrast of dark with light, deep with bright. Today’s colors are a “fearless” Tiger Orange, and a rich “stately forest green” called Eden. I think Pantone’s description of these colors is perfect.

These two colors are the first in this series that I felt truly matched with the Pantone colors. I looked for a while in thrift stores for the perfect green and I really think this dark cardi nailed it. the sweater is Jaclyn Smith brand.

These bright orange pants are Worthington brand and I got them at JC Penney a number of years ago. These are more of a skinny leg trouser than a wide leg trouser. I got them for the bright color and do find occasions in the spring, summer and fall to wear them. You can see how I styled these with a floral tunic here.

This cream colored tank top is a thrifted Loft piece. I actually have two of them, found on different occasions, but the exact same style. This one is a large and has a sheen to it, that you can’t really see in the picture. The other one I have is a medium and is more of a true white. Why do I need two of these? Comfort and ease of wear. They work perfectly for something like this, but I will also be able to use them as a light weight under layer when the temps grow cold. The piece is banded on the bottom, making for a great fit without showing off the bulges. Here are a few to look at.

The scarf I added was another thrifted piece. I don’t have many pieces that are cream or ivory, like this. I am also looking for a cream fisherman sweater and/or turtleneck. I don’t need anything, because I am a clothes horse, but every now and then, I do realize I am lacking something I would love to incorporate into my closet. What about you? In addition to the scarf I wanted to add a long charm pendant necklace to break up the plain back drop of the tank. I think this outfit would have been equally good with a printed tank under the sweater.

My other accessories included my Vera Bradley tote bag and my thrifted Mossimo sneakers.

Wearing White - 3/4 Length Sleeve Tiered Blouse

This is my final post in this wearing white series. I feel this outfit really epitomizes the fall feel and it also showcases some of the fall trends that are floating around out there on the internet and in the fashion world. There are so many trends, and depending on who you get your information from, you’ll see some overlap and some very different ideas as to what is currently trending for fall. I’ll be talking more about that for a few posts starting on Thursday.

Today’s outfit features a white 3/4 length sleeve tiered blouse that I found at a thrift store. Just disregard the snarky look on my face. Ha, ha.

Here is a picture without the vest, so you can get a better look at the top. This top is a brand called Spense. You can find this brand at JC Penney, Nordstrom Rack and a few other retailers.

I didn’t notice until looking at this picture that you can see through the blouse a little bit, so it might be good to wear a cami underneath. It don’t think it is a big deal with the sweater vest over the top. I love the detailing on this piece. Each tier and the flounce on the sleeves are edged with a crocheted embellishment, giving the blouse an extra boho vibe.

I paired the blouse with my Worthington leopard print skirt, which I have styled on the blog before. You can see this skirt paired with a pink blouse, a cropped denim jacket, a teal green sweater, and a white denim jacket. You know a piece was worth investing in when it is worn over and over. Leopard print is still showcasing its fierceness this fall along with other animal prints like snakeskin, zebra and more.

To pull the whole outfit together, I chose this crafted fringe vest. I honestly cannot remember where I got this. Ha, ha. No matter, I like it and reach for it often. Fringe is another trend that seems to be making its own cross seasonal stand in the fashion world.

Accessories for an outfit like this can varied and colorful. You could go classic black or brighten up the look with variations of burgundy, red, blue or green. I wanted the focus to be my white blouse so I kept the accessories more sedate going for gold and brown.

Why not wear a leopard pendant with a leopard skirt?

I’ve had this gold bag for a very long time. It was thrifted and is a brand called emilie. Metallics are another trend that are big this fall. Be on the look out for pieces that shimmer and shine. If you are like me, you already have something in your closet that has a fun metallic sheen. I’ll be talking more about that on Thursday.

I just got these boots from DSW. They are Baretraps and I think they will be getting plenty of use this fall and winter.

Pantone Spring/Summer - 2019 - Pink Peacock & Pressed Rose

Today’s Pantone Spring/Summer colors include a hot pink and a pastel pink. Pink Peacock could be a close cousin of fuchsia and reminds me of the bright pink flowers that begin to appear in many people’s gardens at this time of the year. Pressed Rose is a medium pink that appears only on the London color palette as a companion to New York’s Sweet Lilac. To me it is a more adult version of pink, that almost any woman could wear.

For this series, I thought it would be fun to pair colors that had similar roots, so for this pairing it was pink with pink. You will see another post where I pair yellow with yellow. Whereas, in last Thursday’s post with Turmeric and Sweet Lilac, the colors were quite different, almost to the point of being too different to put together. However, as we are beginning to realize with many fashion faux pas, never say never.

This bright pink thrifted, Worthington sweater was a purchase I made, just for this series. I have a number of bright pink things, but nothing seemed quite right, a little too red, or a little too purple, so when I saw this for a dollar I snapped it up without even trying it on. I like the ribbing around the neck line. Little added details like that are part of what make clothes special.

This David & Young kimono was a clearance find from DSW. Who thinks to shop for kimonos at a shoe store? Me, that’s who. Ha, ha. They have all sorts of great accessories there, like bags, wallets, key chains and of course shoes!

It is hard to see in these pictures, but the kimono’s flowers include the Pressed Rose color. I like the fringy details on the sleeves and it is also on the hem line. This will be a great topper for the warmer weather.

For this outfit I decided to try finding a piece that would mimic the Brown Granite color from the classic neutral palette. It is not often we see an actual brown on this palette. More often they choose a gray. I was disappointed there wasn’t a gray, but then I realized it would force me to think outside my box again. I actually like brown and my hubby loves when I wear it as it brings out my brown eyes, however, it is hard to find brown pieces that aren’t just drab and boring.

I got these brown Worthington trousers at JC Penney. You can obviously tell, I have a lot of Worthington pieces. For me it is a brand that fits my figure pretty well and has a lower price point. I think they make great work wear pieces. Here are a few pairs of pants in various colors: gray, various, bright pink, pull on skinny (similar to the orange ones from last Thursday’s post). This pair is more of a wide leg and very comfortable.

These cute ankle boots I found at Kohl’s in the clearance section. Do you shop clearance? It really pays off at Kohl’s as long as you don’t mind getting stuff at the end of the season. I don’t worry about being spot on as far as the trends and timing. I like what I like and I will wear it, whether it is trending or not.

Along with my light pink ankle boots I grabbed my little pink clutch, and added a few simple pieces of jewelry to keep the kimono and sweater center stage.

Pantone Spring/Summer - 2019 - Turmeric & Sweet Lilac

Today’s outfit revolves around two more colors from the Pantone New York and London Spring/Summer 2019 color palettes. As I stated in my introduction to this series, the two palettes concurred on ten of the twelve palette colors, but each also included two of their own colors. This week I’ve paired the spicy orange Turmeric with New York’s pretty pastel, Sweet Lilac.

I’ve styled these Worthington brand pants from JC Penney, several other times on the blog. You can see those three posts here, here, and here. The reason I refer back to other posts where I have worn a piece is to show you the versatility of the individual pieces in your wardrobe. It is not unusual for us to wear the same jeans, our favorites, over and over again, but a piece like this pair of more dressy pants that keeps showing up again and again, shows its versatility and its value in taking up precious space in our closets.

Before I became a fashion blogger, I would have never thought to pair orange and pink. That is why I love doing this color series so much. It makes me think outside my comfort zone. Who says we can’t pair orange and pink? Pairing colors is really no different than print mixing. With a little practice you will be a color mixing pro in no time.

This crew neck, H&M, sweater was a thrift store find. It is lighter weight which makes it perfect for spring or even a chilly summer evening once the sun goes down. I like the speckling through out. When I searched my closet for a piece to use for the Sweet Lilac color, I thought this came the closest to the warmth and femininity the color was trying to display. Once, I added this silver and bead necklace, which can be pink or a light purple, I knew I had made the right choice.

I decided to pair this look with the Eclipse classic color again, along with another classic color labeled Soybean. I do like, that the Pantone Color Institute has included a palette of neutral, classic colors that can be used with any of the other color palettes. These four colors give you options for how to put your outfits together. You could have an entire outfit of Eclipse (navy) with just a few fun pops of other palette colors for your jewelry, bag or shoes. You could even throw on a scarf or a hat. Now, that sounds like a good idea for another series. Ha, ha. I love color, can’t you tell?

This long, Isaac Mizrahi, trench vest is actually a heavy weight stretch denim dress. Right now, at my current weight it is a little snug to use as a dress, but I think it makes a great vest. When I got it a few years back at a thrift store, I knew I could use it either way.

I’m a big fan of Keds. I like the look of Converse sneakers on other people, but I always feel that they make my feet look like skis. I have a rather narrow foot, to begin with, so I don’t want a shoe that is going to make them look even longer and skinnier. Ha, ha. I know that seems silly. This pair of shoes are called Grasshoppers. I also like the way these fit. They are pretty comfy and have a pretty reasonable price point. You can see more of these here.

This thrifted Simply Vera/Vera Wang cross body bag is a great size for shopping. I am a fan of cross body bags, simply because they are easier to carry for hands free shopping. I don’t like to be fumbling with my purse if I want to take items off the rack to look at. I also think it is more secure to keep it attached to my person rather than leaving it in a cart , where I might not be paying attention.

Print Mixing Mash Up - Checked Trousers - Outfit 2

I wanted this second outfit with the checked trousers to be a little more dressy. This could be something worn to work, or out on a special date. This is a more monochrome look, using mainly the black, gray and white, except for the accessories.

I got this 3/4 length sleeve jacket from a clearance rack last fall at dressbarn. It is roz & Ali brand. The southwest pattern was part of what drew me to this piece. When I decided on these trousers i knew this jacket would be a perfect print mixing piece.

There are two things that make this work. One is the print size on each piece. The pants have a smaller print and the jacket has a larger print. The other is the color similarities.

I decided to go with a black short sleeve sweater top. I could have chosen a colored top or even white or gray. Just about any solid would work with this outfit. I opted to have my color pop be with my bag and my jewelry.

A charm necklace with red beads, beaded bracelets and a red clutch, really stand out with this black and white outfit.

I added my thrifted Ralph Lauren heeled ankle boots. You could probably tell from Tuesday’s post, these pants are pretty long and rub on the ground when I have flats on. This heel gave them just the right amount of lift.

I have one more week on this print mixing series. I hope that this has been beneficial, especially for those of you who have been timid about print mixing. Not every fashion trend is for everyone. You can be fashionable and look put together without having to spend money on new pieces for your closet. It is likely, that you already have many fashionable pieces in your closet. A well structured blazer, a cardigan or two, a couple of pairs of jeans and a pair of dress pants, a dress or a skirt, are all pieces that can be used to make great outfits, print mixing or not.

Think of it this way. If you are just getting started, by being more conscious of your clothing and how you look, you have already taken the first step. Print mixing is more like frosting on the cake. What you want to do first is make the best cake you can, whether it be chocolate, vanilla, or lemon. Once you have that done, then you can think about frosting, sprinkles or whatever other embellishments you want to add.

Print Mixing Mash Up - Checked Trousers - Outfit 1

This week the Print Mixing Mash up features a pair of Worthington black and gray checked trousers. The checkered pattern on these is very subtle, but it is definitely a print, rather than a solid. Worthington has been making reliable dress pants and women’s work clothes for JCPenney since 1985. I have several pairs of their pants, and they are long lasting, wrinkle resistant and fit pretty well.

I have had these pants for many years and have worn them to work and for special outings where I need to be more dressed up. I wanted this first look to be a bit more casual, so chose a thrifted, pinkish red, Merona, gingham blouse, along with my City Streets floral bomber jacket, also from JCPenney. So, yes, I am mixing three prints here. Ha, ha. See how easy it becomes after a little practice.

The prints on the blouse and the trousers are almost an exact match for size, which gives the outfit a more uniform look, even though they are a different color. With the floral bomber on top it pulls the two colored prints together.

This black and gold fringe necklace on a berry colored cord was the perfect accompaniment.

Hello, again, my favorite ballerina flats. These SO flats have a memory foam footbed that make them very comfy. Right now Kohl’s is having a sale on these for only $19.99. They also added a few new colors, so if you are looking for a fun, comfy flat check those out here.

It used to be the trend to match our bags with our shoes. Now the trend has gotten away from that, but every once in a while, I like to match. It just makes an outfit looks polished and balanced. This NY & Co tote was a thrift find. Do you like to match your shoes with your bag? Do you carry the same purse all the time, or do you like to change them frequently? My hubby put me on a purse fast, because I have so many. I keep telling myself I need to use more of them, so they aren’t just laying around, but I get lazy and don’t want to take the time to change everything to a different bag. Ha, ha. How about you? Spring Trend - Utility Dressing

Today I am looking at another spring trend, utility dressing. Typically we think of utility dressing as something a mechanic, painter or other utility worker might wear. Often the uniform will have large pockets, snaps and zippers for ease of wear and storage. These same details have translated into women’s fashion with utility jackets, pants, vests and tops. This spring the trend is bigger than ever and includes jumpsuits in sleek, fun styles.

I am not a fan of jumpsuits. I spend way to much time in the bathroom, so i need things to be as quick as possible, especially when I am at work. However, since I decided to do this little series, I thought I would try to come up with an outfit that mimics a jumpsuit, but still has the ease of a two piece outfit.

This outfit is actually made up of three pieces, but you get the idea. The way to mimic the jumpsuit look is to go back to a monochrome color scheme. I chose olive for my outfit, because that is the color I had utility type pieces in. Large pockets, snaps and zippers all make this outfit fit into the utility vibe.

My button up top is Worthington brand and I’ve had it for a while. I love to shop JC Penney’s clearance racks and I’m sure that is where I found this. I am fond of Worthington pieces as they are usually made for average women like me, who need a little stretch, but still want some structure in a blouse or a pair of pants. I’ve gotten a number of dress pants in this brand too. The other thing I like about this blouse is that is doesn’t gape in the front. The buttons are in the right spots. There is nothing worse than gapage (yes, I did use that as a word) if you are trying to look put together for work or other activities.

My cargo skinnies are another JC Penney purchase from a few years ago. These are Gloria Vanderbilt. I like her brand for the same reason I like Worthington, ease of wear and fit. I used to get Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, but my taste in jeans has grown to include brands that have an edgier and perhaps more youthful vibe to them. I think Gloria Vanderbilt is great for dress pants or, like these, something different than jeans.

The utility vest is a more recent purchase from last season at Kohl’s. This olive utility vest is Mudd brand and was another clearance find. There are very few things that I buy, that aren’t from clearance racks or thrift stores. I could have used my olive utility jacket, because yes, I have one of those as well, but it was a completely different shade of olive. Isn’t it funny how colors that are supposed to be the same, can be so different, but that’s a topic for a different post.

Here is a more detailed look at the pockets on both the pants and the vest. As you can see the vest also has toggles so you can adjust the fit to make it tighter or looser. It has both a full zipper and snaps, giving it added metallic details. I like the brassy look of the metals as well.

My accessories are fairly simple. A black velvet choker with a cross, a few faux leather bracelets, a straw bag with black trim and my black heeled Ralph Lauren boots. The bag and boots were thrifted.

I cuffed the pants for another fun element. If you didn’t want to cuff them, you could also tuck them in. Doing that allows the buckles on the boots to shine, adding that metallic utility detail to the entire outfit.

I’m adding this picture, just because I really liked my modelesque hair and smile. And I didn’t even need to have a fan! Ha, ha.

What do you think of utility dressing? Do you own any utility pieces? Do you own a jumpsuit. Remember, you don’t have to jump on the jumpsuit wagon to get the same effect. Following trends is not so much to mimic a look as it is to make it completely our own. I think that is exactly what I did with this outfit.

Pantone Fall 2018 - Russet Orange, Ultra Violet and Quiet Gray

This week’s Pantone Fall 2018 colors are a bright pumpkin orange and a deep purple we met last spring, that won Color of the Year. Russet Orange is an easy color on the eye and reminds us of those beautiful Maple trees that boast red, yellow and orange leaves. Ultra Violet might be part of your Halloween decorating. Since the combination of orange and purple has become a less dark and more party friendly Halloween pairing, I thought it would be fun to put these two colors together.

These pants I’ve worn on the blog before, here, here and here. They are Worthington brand from JC Penney. These have a side zipper and sit higher on the waist, so help to create a more smooth silhouette.

My top is an older tee from Christopher & Banks. I love the color of this top. To keep the bright colors from being too overwhelming, I chose the Pantone color Quiet Gray as a topper to polish off the look. This fun piece is from the Kohl’s clearance rack and is a brand called About A Girl. I really like the double breasted look and the feminine detailed ruffles.

I kept my accessories fairly simple. This lovely leaf necklace I found at a shop in Grayling, MI called The Main Branch Gallery. Boasting art work and crafts from local artisans it is a great place to visit if you are ever up that way.

I then finished off the look with my silver clutch and silver SO flats that I recently added to my SO shoe collection from Kohl’s. Here is a link if you are interested in other colors. They are on sale right now for only $21.99, which is a good deal for a fairly comfortable shoe that makes any outfit look a little more dressed up. I normally wear an 8.5 or a 9 and I get these in a 9.

Fall Trends - Reds and Browns

Besides the Pantone Fall 2017 color palette, there are other colors that appear on the fashion scene each season. This fall there has been an outpouring of red and brown. Reds are popping up everywhere and in every piece and style of clothing. Whether it be a coat, a dress, a plaid shirt or a bright red clutch, red has become a go to color for the fall fashion season. In addition there is also an influx of chocolate brown. This rich, warm color can be worn by almost anyone and goes well with so many other colors, including red. 

Last week when I took pictures for the floral trend, I figured I might as well take a few pictures for the red trend as well. This week I was going to take a few pics for the chocolate brown, but Monday I got a cold and so today was a day of rest. I really didn't feel like doing much of anything. I did a faith post on the blog, looked at a few emails, ate lunch and watched a movie. I still had to pick my grandson up from school, but that is really all I did today. So I will include a few shopping links that show you the browns that are trending right now. 

I have a number of red pieces, but since it isn't sweater weather yet, I thought I would share my two red jacket finds. I have grown to love red, a color my mother has always loved. I never realized how pretty red can be in clothing. Red is stunning in a rose, or sweet in a valentine, but I've always associated red with fast cars and fast women. Ha, ha. Isn't that the way we are? We jump to conclusions without really researching things out for ourselves. Last year I wore a red sweater in a blog post showing you my OTK boots. What started as having one red sweater has turned into a red obsession. 

This is my Christopher and Banks around town red jacket. It is a very simple piece with a full zipper and two roomy pockets. It is fully lined, but I tend to use it more as a work piece rather than a keep me warm outside piece. Fall is the perfect time to wear a jacket like this. They don't have this color at C & B right now, but they do have a pretty red quilted jacket here. 

The jacket is somewhat fitted, as you can see by this picture of the back. 

This next jacket I found at my favorite thrift store, Savers. It is a Worthington brand from J.C.Penney. A little longer, I expect that I will get some outside wear out of this coat. It is not real heavy, and doesn't contain any wool in it, so like the above jacket will be used for fall, but not long into winter. Here is a oxblood red moto jacket and a red pea coat, both from Penneys.

Once again, there is not a lot of fancy detailing on the coat, but sometimes simplicity is better. Both of these jackets will pair well with any number of scarves. 

This coat has large buttons and again is more fitted through the waist with the addition of button detailing on the back.

Here are a few options for the chocolate brown color. I love the boots and the bags. You don't have to wear the color, you can always accessorize with it. That's why I say no matter what the color you can use it somehow to make an awesome outfit. Accessories are just as important as the clothes themselves.
