Casual and Dressy: Outfit Recap

This week I wanted to show you a recap of the last few weeks' outfits by showing the pictures side by side. This gives you a better idea of how I styled a piece casually and how I styled it more dressy.

The first two were styled around a pair of jeans. I swapped out the casual sneakers, tee and sweater for a dress and sparkly sandals.

These weeks revolved around a black maxi dress. Week 1 was a casual tee, espadrilles and yellow beads. Week 2 a sparkly vest, silver belt and black sandals.

The key piece in these posts was the white crop pants. Casual with the sparkly tee, dark wash denim button up and Keds was turned dressy by changing into a silky blouse, light weight sweater, neutral sandals and a sparkly pewter bag.

Here I styled a pair of light pink jeggings. Again you can see the change of shoes, top and jacket or sweater can take the look from casual to dressy.

In these final two posts there were only a few simple changes made. My black espadrilles were changed out for nude peep-toe heels, the pewter hobo bag became a sparkly pewter clutch, the jewelry switched from casual beads to shiny gold and the lace tee was tucked in a belt added.

I am, by nature a more casual dresser. I don't get dressed up for very many occasions, so this was a fun way to think about how I would make an outfit that started out casual, more dressy. I decided to take this adventure up a notch so starting in August I'll be doing another series on casual versus dressy styles, but this time using denim.

I hope you all enjoyed this series. Let me know your ideas for taking a casual style and turing it dressy. Have a great week.

Piece Perfect

I am playing with some new ideas on my blog. I feel the need to do a little more intentional posting about fashion related subjects. After all, there is so much more to fashion than just showing a picture of an outfit. Since I am truly a writer first and fashion blogger second, I thought why not put a little more emphasis on writing about fashion. I have no idea who will be interested, but the point is to use the ability I have been given, and if I can use that on an area other people are interested in, win, win!

My intention, then, is to begin a series of monthly columns, if you will, on different fashion related topics. The first Thursday of the month I will focus on clothing pieces.

Clothing is like a puzzle. Each outfit is a finished picture made up of a few, or many complementary pieces. An outfit is not as locked in as a puzzle, where the pieces have to go together in an exact way to make the intended picture. We have more freedom with our outfits to throw pieces together that, a few years ago, might have been considered taboo. Pairing a pair of jeans with a dress for instance (see my post of that here). We also can pair colors in an array as varied as the wildflowers along the highway (see my take here). The point is up to us. What am I trying to say with the outfit I put on this morning? If it is a jeans and sweatshirt sort of day, I am probably feeling a need for comfort. If I am wearing something I usually don't wear, I may be feeling bold or daring. This, of course, can transcend our closets and seep into our make up and accessories. I never wear red lipstick. The day I do, I will be saying, "Look at me! I have made a change and I am proud of it!" Ha, ha.

Clothing is part of our language. It enables us to speak without using words. Perhaps that is why I like bright colors and fun textures. It speaks volumes about the person I am on the inside, not just the woman on the outside. Colors speak to the deep inner joy I have found in my relationship with Christ. I expect that heaven will be filled with colors I can't even imagine. Color is such a powerful form of expression. On a drab, gray, winter day I often reach for bright pink or blue to chase the blahs away. Think of your favorite place to vacation or your favorite local coffee shop or restaurant. I bet one of the reasons they appeal to you has to do with color: the blues of the ocean on a sunny day, the oranges of a log fire on a cool fall evening, the calming greens of the coffee shop walls or the dark wood of that Irish pub. Color can speak volumes. Textures can also add a dimension to our clothing language. When I am feeling girly, I reach for ruffles or lace. When I am feeling cold and want comfort I reach for a heavy cable knit or a soft cashmere sweater.

Piece Perfect will focus on different pieces in our wardrobes that can be foundational for building a great outfit. I will try to have an outfit post to go with the piece I have selected. Occasionally,  I might show pictures of the piece along with possible complementary items and accessories. I hope that you will enjoy reading this new portion of my blog and that you will come back each month as I feature a different clothing piece. The first piece I will be styling next month will be a pleated skirt. Be sure to check back the first Thursday of next month.

Leave me a comment below about the colorful places you like to visit! Until next time.

Styling a Maxi Skirt with a Denim Vest - Post 2

This week my post doesn't have a dramatic change from last week (see the casual look here). I am still wearing the same skirt, lace tee and denim vest. The only changes made had to do with my accessories.

Last week I styled this look more casually with black espadrilles. This week they were swapped out for my nude peep toe heels. I tucked the lace tee in rather than leaving it out and I added a belt for a more polished look.

In addition, I changed out the casual beaded necklace for a long gold chain with gold fringe and dangles with a matching bracelet. The gold also matched the gold of the belt.

Lastly I added my sparkly pewter clutch. It is amazing how easy it is to change an outfit from casual to dressy. All you need is a few different accessories and a little creativity. The great thing about this sort of styling is that you can just throw a few things in a bag and go from the office to a night out with just a few simple changes.

Styling a Maxi Skirt with a Denim Vest - Post 1

I've had some people suggest that I post both pictures from these last few weeks to see the casual and the dressy photos side by side. I will be doing a post recap in a couple weeks where I will show all the outfits styled both ways, so keep that in mind.

This week's post centers around a boho type maxi skirt styled with a denim vest. I am wearing a white tee that has a lacy layer in the front. I told my daughter that our next shoot needs to feature photo's with more details. We were in a hurry when we did this shoot, just trying to get some pictures for posts, then go to a movie. Next time we won't have something scheduled after our shoot, so we can take our time.

You can see the bling on this denim vest that I got from Christopher and Banks. I have decided, bling is one of my style staples. You can just make out the lacy overlay of the tee shirt. The necklace was a longer bead and metal mixed type that I doubled to make a casual chic choker. I like the way it brings the colors in the skirt up around my face.

Here you can see the colors of the skirt, which included red, black, off white and a touch of pink. I wore my black espadrilles and carried a small pewter hobo bag. We bloggers are trying to encourage you to think outside the "fashion" box and realize, you don't always have to match your bag with your shoes. I still tend to lean to the conservative side when it comes to matching. I chose the pewter bag as it creates a cohesiveness in the outfit with the silver on my necklace and the metal buttons on my vest. I also wore my tee hanging out creating that casual, comfortable feel and look.

This one was just for fun! I look as though I am seeing a spider, but I think my daughter was telling me to look at my feet. The problem was, with the maxi skirt on I couldn't see my feet. When I saw this picture it made me laugh and I hope it makes you smile as well. That is me, a real, actual woman! Ha. ha.

Between the Lines: Final Week and Styling a Light Pink Pair of Jeggings - Post 2

It is hard to believe that our Between the LInes series, started by Katherine at http://katherinescorner.com/ is drawing to a close. This series featured all sorts of bloggers over the age of 50. Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link for the final installment.

This week I took my light pink jeggings and styled them in a fun, casual way. I used to find it hard to pair things with pink, but my fashion eyes have been opened and I think color matching or mismatching is all about what you love and what you want to say with your clothes. I still have a disposition towards matching, but I am trying to get away from that more and more. A real statement can be made by putting "clashing" colors together.

Photo credit Rebecca Trumbull. Make up Rachel Christensen.

I never used to think that orange and pink went together. Or that it was just too much, but pairing a bright, true orange with these pale pink jeggings is a perfect blend of bright and subtle.

This cute little jacket that I found at a thrift store is a colorful statement piece. It is full of varying shades and psychedelic patterns that pair perfectly with the solid top and pants. I can't wait to try this jacket with some other pieces. The gold belt is a great way to pull in my waist and the color matches perfectly with the embellishment on the tank top.

I ended up wearing my leopard print flats with the outfit, just as another way to mix things up. I think adding a leopard print or a gold clutch would have pulled the whole outfit together. I also would have added a bracelet or some bright colored bangles. Rolling up the legs on the jeggings adds to the casual look.

I enjoyed putting this outfit together and felt it expressed a little of my bohemian, gypsy inner vibe. Trying to stretch ourselves as fashion bloggers and as women, I am finding that there are things I like and things I don't. I am trying to be more open minded to different color combinations and find my own sense of fashion. I am a work in progress and so are you. Embracing that fact is the first step in becoming your own person with your own style.

Between the Lines: Week 8 and Styling a Light Pink Pair of Jeggings - Week 1

Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page for Week 8 of the Between the Lines series featuring more great bloggers over 50.

This week my key featured piece is a pair of light pink jeggings from Chicos. I found this pair at a thrift store and they are a little big around the waist, but fit perfectly through the hips and legs. The color is very light, so could be worn just like a white pair of pants.

This week's look is a little more dressy. The top was a Penney's find. I should have taken a picture of it without the short sleeve sweater, so you could see the floral print. The flowers are large and include the colors red, pink, purple and a little splash of yellow. I added a long red beaded necklace and red peep toe wedges. I put the black fly away sweater over top as an added layer for air conditioned restaurants and buildings.

I added my yellow bag to go with the splashes of yellow on the top. This was a fun look for me and I would feel comfortable wearing this to a variety of events.

Next week I'll show you how I took this same pair of jeggings to a more casual look.

Between the Lines: Week 7 and Styling A Pair of White Crop Pants - Part 2

Several weeks ago I styled a pair of white crop pants for a casual look. You can see that post here. This week you can see how I dressed up the look by changing the top, shoes and adding a sparkly bag.

Photo Credit Rebecca Trumbull. Make up Rachel Christensen.

The sandals are a taupe color and the clutch is what I would call pewter. I think it worked well together and you can't really tell they aren't the same color. The bag is covered in sparkles. I love my bling!

The blouse is a sleeveless button up made out of a light weight polyester that I bought at Kohl's by Vera Wang. I am not a big fan of polyester being the sole content of a clothing item, particularly in the summer. It can be hot, but this was not too heavy and for an evening out, or in  the air conditioning I have no worries of getting too sweaty. The coloration is hard to see, but it has almost a greenish, gray tint in splotches along with the black and white.

Photo Credit Rebecca Trumbull. Make Up Rachel Christensen.

I also topped this outfit with a barely tan 3/4 length sleeve sweater. I love the feel of this piece and use it often in the summer. It is so soft, light weight and comfy and can be dressed up or down. I added some simple metal jewelry. The necklace is a pair of gold an silver rings linked together on a silver chain, and I am wearing a gold cuff. Sorry we didn't have more detailed pictures from this shoot. But hopefully you get the idea.

Between the Lines Week 6 and What to Wear to a Graduation Party

Since I was out of town last week, I am including the link for both Weeks 6 and 7 in the Between the Lines series on Women Bloggers over 50. Be sure to read to the bottom of the page and click on the link to see other great women bloggers over 50. The link will take you to Katherine's Corners. Katherine is the blogger who came up with the idea for this series to introduce us and you to the other many bloggers over 50. These bloggers write about everything from fashion and cooking to home redo's and gardening. Just scroll to the bottom of Katherine's page and click on the links that you find interesting. Maybe you'll find a few new friends to follow. I have.

I apologize that these pics are so horrible, but it was what I had to work with using my flip phone. Yes, I am still part of the dark ages. Ha, ha.

I found this cute sleeveless dress at Kohl's for only a few dollars on the mark down rack. It has a gathered waist, and came with a dark blue ribbon to bring in the dark blue of the fabric. The hem is asymmetrical and the dress is lined with a soft stretchy fabric, just like the outer shell, so it moves easily.

As it was a cooler day, I put my dark wash button up on as a jacket and wore leggings and my navy Ked sneakers. I accessorized with a navy flower necklace from Christopher and Banks and two navy bracelets. Sometimes, I just love everything to match. I am trying to get away from that, but nothing makes me feel quite as put together as an outfit that has single color theme. I carried a small pewter colored hobo bag which was perfect for the few things I wanted to take to the party.

I loved the blue of this outfit, but it could easily be less "matchy" by throwing on a different colored pair of wedge sandals and a bag, maybe in a tan or beige color. Or you could add bright colored yellow accessories, or a pastel colored sweater or light weight jacket.

I'd love to hear your ideas on how to change up this outfit. Let me know in the comments section below!

Next week, I'll be back to my two parter series on single pieces. If you remember I left off with a casual take on white crop pants. Next week, we'll look at a more dressed up version. Thanks for following!

Between the Lines: Week 5 and Styling a Pair of White Crop Pants - Part 1

It's Fashion Tuesday again and that means a new outfit and another segment in the Between the Lines series, which features bloggers over 50. Be sure to read to the bottom of this post where you'll find the link to Katherine's Corners and the next ten bloggers featured in this series.

This week the clothing item I feature is the white crop pant. This pair, I found at Christopher and Banks on clearance. I tried on a bazillion (well, maybe not that many) white pants looking for a pair that had several features. First, they couldn't be see through. Second, they had to be made of fabric that wouldn't wrinkle the first time I sat down in them and third they had to fit my body!

Photo Credit Rebecca Trumbull. Make up Rachel Christensen.

You can't see in these pics, but the pants have little rhinestones on the front of the lower leg adding a bit of bling. Wanting to keep the bling throughout, I paired the pants with a gray tee with rhinestones scattered over the front and my gray sneakers with sparkly dots. I added the denim button up as a light weight jacket, and for that pop of color added a few yellow bracelets and a yellow bag.

Photo Credit Rebecca Trumbull. Make up Rachel Christensen.

The pants have a stretchy feel to them and there are no zippers or buttons to have to deal with. They basically pull on and sit nicely around the waist and through the hips. I am a big fan of Christopher and Banks clothing, but especially their jeans and pants.

Next week my hubby and I will be on vacation. So the second part of this series will be the following week. I hope to post a few things from our travels, so check in sometime next week. My internet service will be spotty as we will be camping part of that time.

Between the Lines: Week 4 and Styling a Simple Black Maxi Dress - Part 2

Last week I styled a simple black maxi dress with a more casual look by adding a striped tee over top, Buttercup colored jewelry and black espadrille shoes. This week I wanted to dress the same maxi up a little bit more for an outfit that could be worn for an evening out with the hubby.

Photo Credit Rebecca Trumbull. Make up Rachel Christensen

As you can see I took off the striped tee and put on a long vest. This vest is covered in clear sequins, so it has a glittery affect. The vest is a fly away style, so to give me a leaner, more polished look I added a metal belt. The belt is silver, although in this picture it almost looks pink (not sure why). I added a simple silver necklace and changed my shoes for a pair of block heel sandals.

Yes, I do have my Fitbit  on, and luckily the color wasn't too bad with this outfit. I really should have taken it off and put on some sort of silver bracelet. As I said before, I wasn't exactly prepared for this shoot. When I was at home putting things together, I had bags and jewelry all figured out and then when I got to my daughter's apartment to do the shoot, we were limited by time and I kept forgetting what I was going to put with what. Ha, ha. Guess I need to start writing things down. Yes, I am an over 50 blogger! Be sure you read all the way to end of this post so you can follow our In Between the Lines series, featuring 10 more great bloggers over 50.

There are plenty of other ways to style this simple black maxi dress. Give me some of your suggestions in the comments section below. I'd love to get your feedback.

Between the Lines: Week 3 and Styling a Simple Black Maxi Dress - Part 1

The next few weeks I want to show two ways for styling a certain piece. This week I am focusing on a simple, knit black maxi dress. The dress itself is very plain. It has a sleeveless tank type top and a straight skirt with no form to it. Some people might use a maxi like this a swimsuit cover up or for lounging around the house when they don't have to go to work. The beauty of this dress is that it is reasonably priced, light weight, doesn't require a slip underneath and very comfortable..

Photo Credit Rebecca Trumbull, Make Up Rachel Christensen

For this particular outfit I simply threw a gray and black striped tee over the top. The shirt is very light weight as the black stripes are made of a sheer see through material and the grey stripes are lighter weight knit. I added a pop of color with the Buttercup yellow beaded necklace and bracelets and lastly stepped into a very comfortable pair of black espadrilles.

All Photos by Rebecca Trumbull, Make Up Rachel Christensen

This was a very comfy outfit and would be great for an evening stroll along the beach or boardwalk. Or for a casual day of shopping. Next week I'll show you how to dress this simple maxi up for a night out!

Between the Lines - Stylin' Granny Mama

Please read to the end of this post for a new series started by Katie at Katherine's Corners.com called Between the Lines.

Today's post is a typical day in the life of me. I work at a university bookstore as an assistant manager. The way we are able to dress for this job is anything from fancy to casual. I usually go for dressy casual as my job not only involves computer work and scheduling, but book slamming as well. Book slamming is the term I made up for unboxing and shelving textbooks. If you have any experience with textbooks you know they are often heavy and come in boxes sometimes covered in dirt and grease.

On this particular day I opted for a chambray shirt as a jacket worn open over a monochrome peach echo top and pants. The top is a shade lighter than the pants, but it still works. The scarf I purchased from The Jacket Society. All of their items are made right here in the USA. Be sure to check out their site. I bought two of their scarves and they are just beautiful.

My pictures on my cheapy flip phone do not do justice to the intricate beauty of this simple scarf. The open weave and the subtle silver threads give it a shimmery appearance. I can't wait to wear it with other summer outfits.

I finished off my work outfit with my comfy gray Keds with silver bling. A perfect match with my shimmery scarf. Below you can shop some similar styles.

This week in addition to my regular fashion post I wanted to introduce you to a ten week series started by Katie at Katherine's Corner.com. The series titled, Between the Lines will be featured every Tuesday and centers on bloggers over 50. Being over 50 and starting a blog has been challenging. Technology has never been easy for me. I much more enjoy the written word on a paper page than a digital image on a computer screen. However, I think learning and adapting are very important characteristics to have, especially as we age. How many times have we heard the phrase, "They are so set in their ways!" Well, I don't want to be accused of that, so I thought that blogging would not only be a way to learn and grow, but to force me to write more and dabble with the world of fashion. In addition to that I wanted to be a source of encouragement and inspiration to women of all ages. I hope you will join us and visit the bloggers that are featured each week. You might find a few you want to follow on a regular basis. If you do, just hit their subscribe button and you'll get emails every time they feature a new post. I'm very thankful to Katie for all her hard work putting this together! Just click on the image below to see this week's featured bloggers.

Spring Colors: Lilac Gray and Peach Echo

This is the final installment in my Spring Color series using the Pantone 2016 Spring color palette. I decided to get brave and do a bit of pattern mixing with this outfit. The open front cardigan is black with a lilac gray pattern. Seeing as I got this at a thrift store, I was excited that it had that color and matched the Pantone Lilac Gray perfectly.

Photo Credit: Rebecca Trumbull, Makeup by Rachel Christensen

The sleeveless blouse I got two years ago at J.C. Penney. The peach echo elephants are outlined with a lilac gray, bringing the two pieces together. The lilac gray bag, also from Penney's shines with gold chain on the handles, which also matches the gold buttons on the blouse.

I added a pair of black leggings, an orange/peach long necklace which I looped twice to make it shorter, and a pair of gray swede booties from the clearance rack at DSW.

The outfit is comfy, casual but dressy and the layers are light, making it a great combination for a spring day or a summer evening. It also might look great with a belt around the cardi and the blouse accentuating the waist for a different look.

Shop the Look (similar pieces):

Printed Open Front Cardi - Kohl's -$49.00; Macy's - $44.99

 Blouse - Kohl's - $24.99; Chico's - $65.00

Black Leggings - Kohl's - $38.00

Gray Booties - DSW - $119.95; $49.95

Bag - J.C.Penney - $59.40; Kohl's - $39.99

Necklace - Impressions Online Boutique - $24.00; Chico's - $49.00

Seeing as I am still new to this blogging game, I want to apologize if my selections do not do justice to the original outfit. Many of my clothes are bought from thrift stores and I try to find pieces that will give you the same look even though they are different. Also, I encourage you to find inspiration in my outfits, rather than copying a specific look. If you have certain stores you like to shop at, peruse their racks and online sights for similar items. Instead of a printed open front cardi, maybe you find a solid steel gray button up cardi that you love. The point is to find your fashion "real" look. That look that makes you feel confident and special. I am here to give you ideas, to inspire you to be beautiful and unique, not make you a carbon copy of me. Please don't do that, one of me is enough! Ha, ha.

Next week will be little different as my photographer/daughter is not always available to take my pics, so you might be getting a little lower quality photos, but my goal is the same, to encourage you to feel and dress like the actual woman you are. Until next time!

Today I am linking up with Jess at Elegantly Dressed and Stylish for Turning Heads Tuesday.

Spring Colors: Fiesta Red, Limpet Shell and Iced Coffee

Today's outfit combines the sass of Fiesta along with the beachy vibe of Limpet Shell. Add to the mix a cup of Iced Coffee and we are ready for a lunch date with girlfriends or and evening out with the hubby. Again, my outfit choices may not exactly match the Pantone colors, but colors are meant to give you ideas on how to mix and match outfits, so perfect matches are not necessary.

I don't wear a significant amount of red, but I really liked this top. It could be worn long or, as I did, it can be tied at the waist for a casual shorter look. Here is a possible substitute at Kohl's.

You can see below that I styled the outfit with ankle boots, a bag that could be used as a cross body or a clutch and a statement necklace that layered Limpet Shell, cream and Rose Quartz beads for an eye catching look.

Closet Clean Out - Tip 6: Shoes and Bags

The final installment in our closet clean out series has to do with corralling our shoes and bags. I know some of you out there have a strong psychological draw to purses and shoes. Would you call it an addiction? I have a shopping problem, but not as much for shoes and purses. That doesn't mean I don't have my share of shoes and bags. It is rather silly. I mean how many bags do we need to carry at one time, or are you really going to spend the time switching out purses every time you want a different look? I know women do. As far as shoes, well, how many feet do you have? Last time I looked I had two! Still, we are women and we have lots of shoes and bags, so the following are a few suggestions for organizing those items.

This is a nifty little bin and it holds plenty of pairs of shoes. This one has a number of my summer sandals, flip flops and sneakers. No, it doesn't look pretty, but it keeps them off the floor. These from Walmart are similar. The picture below shows what the bins look like stacked in my closet. Sorry for the poor phone photography!

There are also shoe boxes that can be bought at the store. I'm cheap so I use this:

These aren't as pretty and you can't see what's inside, but I really only use these for the shoes that are not part of the current season. I just stack them on top of each other in my closet. Often, I can get more than one pair of shoes in a box. Now boots are a different issue and right now I don't have a plan....maybe more on that next fall!

As for my bags and purses, most of them lay flat in my closet, but I don't have anything real expensive. If you are a Coach purse kind of girl, you'll need a better way of storing your bags to keep them in pristine condition. Here is an idea I thought of today.

A simple over the door hook can solve some of those bag storage problems. This would be good for bags you are currently using. Here are several possibilities from Walmart: multiple hooks and individual hooks.

There are so many ways to organize and store things. I hope that you enjoyed my Closet Clean Out tips and I would love to hear how you might have been inspired to organize and clean your closet. Let me know your stories and ideas in the comments section below.

Have a great day and keep stylin'!

Spring Colors: Snorkel Blue, Flash Green and Iced Coffee

This week's color palate includes my attempts at Pantone's Snorkel Blue, Green Flash and Iced Coffee. I've noticed that Iced Coffee keeps showing up and I am thinking that color is like a good cup of coffee, great to have anytime and anywhere! You will see in these photos some of my pieces have been reused like the black chunky heel flats and the Lilac Gray bag.

My version of Green Flash really does not do the color justice. The color is much more vibrant than the top that I have on. That being said, I think the outfit would be better with a brighter version of that green.

I styled the outfit two different ways, so you could see a variation on a similar theme. The first outfit is styled with black crop pants that have a bit of a lacy texture to them. I like this look and would wear something like this to work. The lightweight leopard print scarf has an Ice Coffee background with black spots pulling in the black of the pants. For added depth and fun, I added a few green beaded necklaces over the scarf.

In the second look I removed the scarf and green necklaces and put on a silver and blue necklace as well as swapping the crop pants for a pair of floral Palazzo pants. I am not as fond of this particular look as it makes my hips and legs look wider. I love Palazzo pants as they are so comfy and fun, but you really do need to find a look that works for you. After viewing these photos I decided I am going to do a post or a series of posts, just on Palazzo pants, so we can figure out what works and what doesn't.

Hope you enjoyed this week's fashion post and that you are inspired to see what you have in your closet that might make an outfit using some of Pantone's Spring colors. Next week, I'll continue my Spring color line up.

Closet Clean Out - Tip 5: Accessories

I love accesories! Necklaces, bracelets, scarves....you name it, I love it and enjoy wearing it. What I don't enjoy is trying to figure out what to do with it all. As with all my Closet Clean Out Tips, it is important to go through your accessories and purge. Are you ever really going to wear that black scarf? What about that necklace you got at Disney World back in 1983? Or what about that charm bracelet you have had since high school? If a piece has sentimental value, then by all means hang onto it, but unless is has some sort of value, or it is something you love and actually wear, you can probably let it go!

I am going to show you a few of my own organizing "tricks". These are simple and cheap!

This is a simple, adhesive hook. There are tons of these available at Walmart and other stores. Here is one example. These hooks are easy to apply and remove and they hold quite a bit of weight as you can see from the following picture. These hooks can be applied anywhere. These three are on a book case right next to my dresser, but I have three more in my closet on the wall.

Yes! I have too much jewelry and I am due for a purge! Ha, ha.

This is a simple plastic hanger, but with a little tying ingenuity it becomes....

A scarf hanger! I use this for my infinity scarves, but you could take any other type of scarf and hang it by tying it onto the hanger. Some of my scarves I fold an put in a storage cubicle like this one and then set it on a shelf in my closet.

There are plenty of other options for storage of jewelry such as tiered trays, hanging organizers, and organizers you can slip into drawers.

I hope that gives you inspiration for organizing some of your accessories. Next week we'll focus on shoes and bags! Have a lovely Tuesday!

Spring Colors: Rose Quartz, Serenity and Iced Coffee

Today I am stylin' rose quartzserenity and iced coffee. My color palate is usually darker or brighter colors, but for the sake of showing off the Pantone color line, I paired this rose quartz blouse with a leopard print skirt. You might say the skirt whispers the iced coffee in its spots. I then added gold jewelry with just a hint of serenity in the form of bracelets and a necklace. The simple clutch is charcoal gray with gold trim.

I like the clean look of black hose and black pumps with this outfit. It makes the outfit perfect for a night out with my hubby, a spring wedding or Easter morning church service.

I hope you enjoyed viewing this outfit. If you follow me on a regular basis, I would love for you to show me your Spring outfit ideas. Find a light pink top in your closet and pair it with those crop pants you just picked up at the store. Now for our next Closet Clean Out Tip.

Closet Clean Out - Tip 4 - Pants:

You might feel that I am being repetitive, but that is because I am. A huge part of cleaning is organizing. If you already have a system in place then you may not need much incentive to get your closet in ship shape. But many of us, just need a plan. I have found, for me, the best plan involves organizing as I clean.

I have my pants separated by style. I keep my pants folded in a bureau of sorts, but you may hang yours. I put my skinny leg jeans together in one cubicle; my boot cut or straight leg jeans in another cubicle, and dress pants in a third cubicle. Several years ago, I went through all of my pants. I tried on every single pair and got rid of many that didn't fit, or that I had a, "What was I thinking," response when I looked in the mirror.

Jeans and slacks should compliment, not draw attention to. Now, the world of pop and movie stars may disagree, but an actual woman wants to look nice, put together and once in a while sexy. A good fit will either lift and define or skim, depending on the look you are going for. If you have pants in your closet that make your thighs look like bumpy sausages, then put them in the donation box. Work pants should be appropriate for your job. I can wear many things because I work at a university bookstore, but we do have a dress code. If I wear leggings I have to wear a top or tunic that covers my behind (which is the only way I will wear leggings). I am sorry ladies, but leggings that look like skin may be comfortable, but they are not appropriate out in public. Do you really want everyone to know every curve of your bootie, where nothing is left to the imagination? If you want to be comfy that's great, but at least consider wearing something that covers.

As you go through your pants think about, where will I wear these? How many pairs of boot cut, straight leg and skinny jeans do I need to have? How many pairs of dress pants do I  need to own? Think about colors as well. Will you really wear all seven pairs of pink crop pants or would one or two be enough?

Believe me, ladies, I am preaching to the choir. I love to shop and I am continuously paring down my closet. My method to the madness is if I go shopping and buy four things, I try to get rid of four items in my closet. It doesn't have to be match for match, skirt for skirt, but no less than four items.

I hope these tips are helpful and that you are getting a great feeling of satisfaction as you clean and organize.

Next week, Spring Outfit Number 4 and more Closet Clean Out tips. Enjoy your Easter!

Spring Colors: Serenity, Buttercup and Iced Coffee

Here we are! Ready for Spring! I just can't wait for warmer weather. While I am waiting I thought I would try on some of Pantone's Spring color choices.

My outfit this week emphasizes Serenity. It is the perfect name for this light blue that reminds us of warm, sunny days and gentle breezes.

The light denim button up (similar here) is very close to the Serenity hue. Once again, I am layering and put the top over a summer dress (see Lord and Taylor version) that feels like a tee shirt. Underneath I have a pair of leggings that hit just about mid calf. The leggings are close to Pantone's Snorkel Blue. The outfit would be great without the leggings too. I opted for leggings as I currently have bad varicose veins. The boots (similar from DSW) and clutch (similar here), as well as the belt (seen below) are as close as I could get to Iced Coffee with what was in my closet. My choices really have more of a carmel edge than the Pantone color, but you get the point.

For my accessories I chose the color Buttercup. The vibrant yellow pulls in the yellow on the dress and adds a pop of sunshine to the outfit (Etsy option). Below you can see it all put together!

My hubby liked this outfit! Which says a lot! It would be great with sandals or flip flops for a causal beach vibe as well.

I hope you enjoyed this week's post. Be sure to check in next week for another Pantone inspired Spring outfit! And keep reading for this week's Closet Clean Out tip!

Closet Clean Out - Tip 2 - Trim the Socks and Underwear

Have you ever noticed how full your sock and underwear drawer are? I have a drawer for socks and a drawer for underwear? Why? I mean I only wear one pair of socks per day and one pair of underwear. If I do laundry once a week that would mean I should potentially have seven pairs of socks and seven pairs of underwear. Heck, I could fit them all in the same drawer. But I don't! I have a whole drawer dedicated to socks and a whole drawer dedicated to underwear.

Okay, I get the need or let's say want, to have a variety of underwear. Casual, comfy, pretty, sexy, cotton, polyester blends, various colors, bikinis, boy cut, on and on the list goes, but a whole drawer? So let's trim down.

Dump out the underwear drawer and immediately discard anything with holes, fraying rubber, torn lace and so on. Next get rid of anything you cannot fit into, or that you do not deem comfortable enough to wear for more than a few hours. Of course it is okay to keep a few sexy items that might only stay on for a few minutes, but get your spouse/partner's input for what they like. The majority of us are wearing those items for them, not for ourselves. I know there are exceptions and many of you may like a lacy thong as your go to underwear. You decide what you want to keep....same rule as last week...try to get rid of ten items.

This goes for bras as well. Some of you girls collect bras like others collect purses or shoes. Do your self a favor, get rid of those ones you cannot wait to take off! If you have a little (or a lot) of excess weight like I do, buy a few new bras that have larger back straps that help smooth out and conceal bulges. Don't buy bras off the clearance racks unless you try them on. And don't be too proud to step up a size. For years I was a 36 B, now I get a 38 C, not because I am so much bigger in the cup, but because they fit better all the way around.

Once you have gotten rid of those items you no longer want, spend a few minutes deciding on a way to organize and keep your items looking neat and easily accessible. Bras really should be kept so the cups are out, not squashed together, which leads to wrinkles and pock marks in the cup area. A bra is supposed to make you look smooth, not like your boobs have indentations and bulges. Underwear is a little more versatile, so feel free to roll, fold, or toss, if that is your preferred method of organization.

Use the same method for your socks. Dump out your drawer and get rid of any socks with holes. If you have two pairs of sock that are exactly the same and only one pair has a hole, keep the one sock without holes for a replacement for the other pair when one of them gets worn. Sort through your styles and colors. Obviously in the winter you will want a few pairs of thicker boot socks. In the summer you may only use a few no-show socks and the rest of the time be in sandals. Also, think about the colors of socks you have. I usually pair my sock color with my pant color, so most of the socks I wear are blue, because I am a jeans kind of girl. I seriously do not know why I have so many other colored socks. Maybe I am saving them to make sock puppets with my Grandson! Seriously, get rid of what you don't use.

Here you will see a few links for organizers that look cool. Personally, I do not have anything in place yet, but I am hopeful that someday utopia will be reached in my home and I will be organized.

Next time we will talk about dresses and skirts! Stay tuned!

Layers of Fun: The Outer Limits - Week 2

Here is the conclusion of my first photo shoot. Remember, I am not normally a photogenic person, so it took some gentle direction from my photographer daughter to help me know when to smile, when to walk, how to tilt my head and so on. I am a work in progress, a living, breathing testament to Philippians 1:6 - "...He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus."

This is one of my favorite outfits. It was classy, but comfortable. A perfect outfit for my job as an assistant manager at local university bookstore. I paired the tunic and narrow leg trousers, both from Christopher and Banks (see similar pants here). The tunic is no longer available. The vest and shoes were thrift store finds. The vest gives the outfit an edgy vibe and the shoes shout menswear oxfords. The necklace was probably clearance at Kohl's (bought a few years ago).

I like this outfit too. I am most comfortable in jeans and these skinnies are easy to slip into my taller boots. As I said from last week's post, I am not real fond of the vest worn by itself as the pattern tends to widen my already wide middle. But putting it under the fitted jacket works. The raspberry shirt adds a pop of color. Now if I could just find my horse!

Thanks for checking out this week's fashion post. Next week (and month) we'll be looking at Pantone's Spring colors and I'll be searching my closet for outfits that work the color scheme. We will also be doing a "closet clean out" with tips for slimming down our bulging closets. I hope you will join me.

Layers of Fun: the Outer Limits - Week 1

We finally got to the outer layers. Outer layers can include jackets, sweaters, vests, and coats. Follow those with other accessories such as jewelry, scarves, bags and shoes. The pictures below show you some of my final outfits. I did not focus on coats, other outer wear, or bags as we will focus on those in a different post at a later time.

You can see with the above outfit I added a sweater, skinny belt to give me a waist and a scarf. Even though it is print on print the scarf pulls together the black in the shirt and pants as well as the raspberry color of the sweater. The ensemble is completed with a pair of heels.

All the pieces in this outfit except the necklace were thrift store finds. The fun necklace was from H & M a few years ago. As my blog evolves, I hope to be more tech savvy and give you links to possible similar outfit pieces. Right now I am still learning. Thanks for being patient.

Tomorrow I will post Outer Limits: Week 2, as we will be starting a Spring theme next week. Be sure to check out my last two outfits from our first photo shoot tomorrow, then put next Tuesday on your calendar for Spring colors and tips for weeding out your closet. Until next time, keep stylin'!

Layers of Fun: Middle Earth

We talked about our foundational layers in last week's post which you can see by scrolling down to the bottom of the page. This week we'll look at a few images of clothing that can be worn over the bedrock or under layers. A lighter weight option is a simple button up shirt. The gingham choice is a looser fit, whereas the other is fitted.

Another option is a lighter weight turtleneck sweater. This black, thrift store find is made of silk. Wearing this with black leggings makes me look sleek, but I would not be caught dead in a pair of leggings without a tunic or dress that covers my behind, so I top the turtleneck and leggings with another thrift store find, the leopard print dress.

Other middle earth layers can include tunics and vests as seen below. I do not like the way the vest makes me look heavier, but when you see it under the jacket I chose for next week's post you'll see why it works.

Finally, we need to have a few bottoms. Slacks, leggings (as seen above) or narrow leg trousers are just a few of the options available to cover our lower selves when the weather is cold. I love to dress in skirts as well, and we'll talk more about those in a future post.

Thanks for peeking in as I learn more about how to dress myself for a stylin' granny mama look.

Next week, the Outer Limits!
