Fall/Thanksgiving Outfit - Maxi Skirt and Pullover Sweater - Dressy

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope your day will be filled with whatever you need to feel peaceful and well. For some that will mean gathering together with family for a feast. Others will, do to the pandemic, opt for a more low key celebration. My husband and I will be on our own. Our older daughter and her hubby are both sick and since I was exposed to them, my hubby and I are self quarantining, so we won’t be seeing our younger daughter or grandson either. I am sure there are many out there who are in similar situations, so please know, you are not alone and you are being thought of and missed by your family. The holidays are proving to be more precious, yet even more difficult with not being able to see those we love, but the key is to try to remember all you do have to be thankful for.

Today, I am thankful for a working furnace, a warm bed and a hot shower. I am thankful for the food we have to eat, even if it isn’t turkey with all the trimmings and I am thankful that our extended family, especially our aging parents are safe and healthy at this point in time. I am also thankful for the sun, when it is shining, because we are already having too many gray days, and I am thankful for the joy associated with the Christmas season, because of what our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ did for us. Like the Grinch realized when he tried to steal Christmas, it comes anyway, no matter if we have our families, the decor or the food, because Jesus came.

Today, I am showing you the more dressed up version of the outfit from Tuesday’s post. Both the tiered maxi skirt and olive pullover sweater were thrifted. For today, I added a thrifted blazer, heels and bag, to elevate the look.

Out of the three outfit combinations I have done the last few weeks, I feel like the transition from casual to dressy is most evident in this outfit. Each piece that was swapped out or added, to make this outfit more dressy, really seems to add an element of class that is not evident in the more casual outfit. Not that the casual look was bad; it was meant to be casual and looks like the perfect outfit for a day of window shopping or lunch with friends (oh to be able to do that again). This look, while carrying a bit of a boho vibe, is something that could be worn to a show, a nice dinner out or to a Holiday concert.

This thrifted evergreen jacket is a brand called I.S.B.Inc. Not to be confused with IBS, ha, ha, ha! It doesn’t seem to be a brand that exists any longer. There were a few things that popped up on thredup, but that was it. While it is supposed to be a double breasted look when buttoned, I can’t button it. Ha. ha. However, I knew that when I bought it. I like the way the buttons line up down both sides, so it just looks more decorative with the jacket open. Just because a piece doesn’t fit exactly how it was intended, doesn’t mean you can’t use it.

I decided to go with coppery gold for my jewelry as you can see with my charm pendant necklace and my sparkly bracelet. I thought it went well with the whole look and had more of a fall feel.

My bag and shoes are both thrifted pieces. The heeled shoeties are Bandolino and the bag is a brand called Kelly & Katie. You can find Bandolino brand shoes at DSW, Macy’s and other retailers. Kelly & Katie brand is found at DSW and on second hand retailers like Poshmark and thredUp.

The two pieces are different colors. The bag is more of a salmon red and the shoes are more of a burgundy, but when you have them apart, they almost look like they go together.

Fall/Thanksgiving Outfits - Harvest Tee and Distressed Jeans - Dressy

Yesterday was my eldest’s birthday. She ordered us lunch, which I picked up and took to her house, then after we ate, we went shopping. I have to say, I felt almost like life was normal for a few hours. We had fun and I enjoyed my time with her. I have always tried to take my girls shopping on their birthdays since they were fairly young. I used to take both girls and we would get lunch together, but then the gift buying would be for the birthday girl, although I would usually end up buying the other girl a little something too. Life is so busy and with the Covid complications it is hard to find time for those moments.

Today’s look is the dressed up version of my distressed jeans and harvest tee. I only made a few changes to elevate the look. I switched out my cozy sweater for a long burgundy blazer. I also donned a pair of heeled boots and grabbed a snazzier bag.

This burgundy blazer is a thrifted Pendleton piece. I have, on several occasions thought to get rid of it, but it is such a classic, tailored piece that I keep hanging on to it, and this is precisely why. I love the way it looks with jeans. Obviously, it would also look good with a pencil skirt or more dressy trousers. The structured collar, more fitted waist, pocket flaps and detailed buttons really make this a class act.

I kept the same necklace, but added a couple gold bangle bracelets and a gold belt to go with the gold on the tee.

This thrifted, no name bag has such cute details. From the faux alligator print to the fun clasp and more structured shape, I knew I had to snatch it up. Just don’t tell my hubby! Ha, ha. He thinks I have too many sweaters, bags and shoes. Ha, ha. Why would he possibly think that?

These boots were also a thrift store find. They are Life Stride brand and I really like the brownish, burgundy color. It makes them unique from the typical black, brown or gray colors of many of my boots.

Fall/Thanksgiving Outfits - Sweatshirt and Skinny Jeans - Casual

For the next few weeks I thought I would focus on outfits that could be worn for the Thanksgiving Holiday, or just as another fall outfit. Each week I will take one or two main pieces and show how to style them two different ways. This week my pieces are a pair of embellished skinny jeans, and a deep yellow sweatshirt that I grabbed from my daughter’s "to get rid of” pile.

For today’s look I wanted to go with a more casual vibe. The two pieces could be worn by themselves and be perfectly acceptable for a casual, low key Thanksgiving; just add a scarf or necklace and some sneakers or knee high boots and you are all set. I wanted to do something with a little more texture and print, so I decided to top the whole outfit with my plaid ruana that I got last year at Bass Pro Shop. It may sound a little funny, but I love their clothes. They have a little higher price point than I usually pay, but you can read the story of how my hubby surprised me with a mini shopping spree here.

It is always a journey taking my own pictures. Ha, ha. Here is the ruana from more of a back and side view.

This rich yellow sweatshirt is from a local boutique Eden Fashion Boutique. I did a blog post on their Sylvania location which you can see here. Unfortunately that shop closed up during the pandemic. The original shop is still in business in Bowling Green, OH which is about a 25 minute drive. My daughter decided she didn’t wear it enough for it to warrant taking up space in her closet. I absolutely love color. It also has snaps from about the elbow up on both sleeves, which gives it a fun look. I should have taken a picture of it without the ruana. Oh well! I’ll save that for another time.

You can see the blingy embellishment on my jeans. There are sparkles on both legs, the right is closer to the hip. These are Juicy Couture brand and I got them a year or so ago at Kohl’s on the clearance rack.

Since I wanted this to be casual, but it is also meant to be for an occasion like a Thanksgiving dinner, I added a little bit of jewelry and a bag to bring out the blue in the ruana. My long pendant necklace I use regularly. The beaded bracelet has a cute owl charm on it and the blue cross body bag was a gift a few Christmases ago from my younger daughter.

These rusty colored moto boots are a soft faux suede and have zippers on the inside of the leg. They are Steve Madden brand and I ordered them from DSW last year on clearance.

Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2020 - All the Outfits

I wanted to end this fall color series by showing you all of the colors from both the Pantone New York Palette and the Pantone London Palette. To make it a little more interesting I thought I would show outfits that have, either a same color or a similar color side by side.

I hope that you enjoyed this series. If there are any other topics in fashion that you are interested in learning more about, or in seeing me talk about or put together in an outfit, I would love for you to let me know. I don’t follow trends too closely and this fall, I totally missed the boat on that, so I do apologize. I know some of you enjoy hearing what the trends are for each season and seeing how I apply those to the “real” world. Often when we look at websites or see magazines with tall, thin models or celebrities who are seamlessly coifed we think there is no way we would want to try this or that, especially when it comes to runway trends. However, there are a lot of trends that we can participate in and enjoy like leopard print, various colors and different types of accessories.

I will keep doing this Pantone series as long as I am blogging, because I feel strongly that even though we might differ from each other in our style, color is something we all have in common. Approaching new, bold and different colors without fear is a way to expand your wardrobe and spice up your style without completely committing to a whole different way of doing things.

The Color Palettes Side by Side.

Samba

I love the color red and I think there is a red for every complexion. I think both of these outfits worked quite well and love that both of them present a more neutral palette with a bright pop of red. In the New York outfit on the left Samba is paired with Fired Brick and Sleet. In the London outfit on the right Samba is paired with Tawny Birch and Sheepskin.

Ultramarine Green

Ultramarine was on both palettes and I think it is a pretty green that can bring a peaceful, yet vibrant feel to any outfit. This color green would look great in a bag, jewelry or a scarf and to me it really seems to draw your eyes to it. Maybe it is just my love for the greens in nature that make me like this color so much. In the New York outfit on the left Ultramarine Green is paired with Classic Blue and Blue Depths. In the London palette on the right Ultramarine Green is paired with Exuberance and Sleet.

Military Olive

While I love bright and bold colors like the two I mentioned previously, I love using olive as a neutral. It goes with every color, and has a different vibe than gray or beige. It is classy, yet subtle. In the New York outfit on the left, Military Olive is paired with Peach Nougat and Sandstone. In the London outfit on the right Military Olive is paired with Strong Blue and Jet Stream.

Green Sheen/Celery

It is hard to tell in these pictures, but Green Sheen and Celery are pretty similar. I think, because the lighting is different the colors look brighter in the shaded picture. They are different colors, but not enough different that they couldn’t be exchanged from one outfit to another. In the New York outfit on the left, Green Sheen is paired with Amber Glow and Almond Oil. In the London outfit on the right, Celery is paired with Mandarin and Sheepskin.

The Other Colors

These last two are paired only because they were the last two and don’t really have anything in common. The New York outfit on the left is a combination of Rose Tan, Magenta Purple and Sleet. The London outfit on the right is a combination of Burnt Henna, True Blue and Dress Blues.

Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2020 - London Palette - Burnt Henna, True Blue and Dress Blues

This is the last color combo in the Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2020 - London Palette series. On Thursday I will have a recap post of all of the outfits from both palettes. Today’s outfit revolves around a cranberry red, a blue that is much like Classic Blue and navy.

Both of the Pantone palettes for fall were filled with blues and reds, but they also had plenty of other options, so if you are not a blue or red wearer, you still have other fabulous colors to wear. My Christopher and Banks ankle pants are not exactly Burnt Henna, but they will due. I got these and a pair of green ones when they were on clearance. They are stretchy, which allows for ease of movement. The only thing I don’t like about them is they have no belt loops. If a pair of pants fits perfectly you don’t really need a belt, but a belt always makes me feel more secure. Otherwise, I always feel like I am pulling my pants up. These are a size 12, which is usually my normal for Christopher and Banks.

True Blue is very much like Classic Blue. It is not a dark navy, like the Dress Blues, but a nice medium blue that almost everyone can wear. I wanted to wear layers, so I added a Christopher and Banks cardi and the scarf.

My Dress Blues jacket is a thrifted Ruff Hewn piece. It is a moto jacket, but instead of being strictly leather, or faux leather, it is made of a linen/cotton blend and faux leather for the leather like portions.

My plaid button down shirt is also a Christopher and Banks purchase from this year. It is a little bit textured which gives it an added dimension, even though in these pictures you can’t see it very well.

Once again, with all the layers and textures, I kept my accessories very simple. I have a navy flower pendant necklace, but unlike many pendant necklaces, mine is shorter.

You’ve see this Simply Vera Vera Wang bag on the blog before. This was a thrifted piece and provides a nice, roomy area which is especially good for traveling to pack a few extras like a notebook or reading book. I also added a few beaded bracelets with blues.

Finally, these are my newer ankle boots. Once again, these are SO brand, which are my go to faves for ankle boots from Kohl’s. They fit (size up a half size if you want to be able to wear extra thick socks in the colder temps), are easy to get on an off and seem to hold up quite well in our ever changing weather here in the mid west. These are the first pair I’ve gotten that actually have the zipper on the outside of the foot rather than the inside, which is a nice contrast.

Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2020 - London Palette - Samba, Tawny Birch, and Sheepskin

Today’s neutral palette is interrupted by the bold, daring color red. Samba was in our New York palette and if you don’t remember which outfit that was you can see it again here. In the New York outfit I paired Samba with Fired Brick and Sleet for a chic work outfit with a bit of subtle print mixing. Today’s outfit, once again, would be perfect for the office or a date night with your significant other. In this time of Covid restrictions do you get dressed up to go out, or do you go out at all? Thus far my hubby and I usually get take out and either bring it home or take it to a park and eat it, so I’m afraid I haven’t been getting very dressed up, usually just jeans and a nicer shirt. It really depends on the day. I am not sure what we are going to do when the weather gets real cold.

When I was looking for pieces for this whole fall Pantone series, I knew I wanted to incorporate this thrifted, red, Calvin Klein, sleeveless sweater. I originally bought the piece thinking I could use it as a sweater vest, which, seeing as it is a larger size will offer enough room to put a blouse or long sleeve tee underneath. It will probably show up again either on the blog or in my Instagram feed. If you don’t follow me on Instagram make sure you do. I show you more of my day to day outfits there and occasional cute pictures of our cat and pretty scenery.

My Sheepskin colored cardigan was another thrifted piece. I thought it was a good balance between tan and beige and will be wearable with just about any color. This is a thrifted St. John’s Bay piece.

My Tawny Birch houndstooth patterned ankle pants have been on the blog before. These are Sonoma and were thrifted. You can see them styled in the Pantone Fall 2017 series, and in another series I did on vests.

Since I really wanted the red sweater to be the focal point of the outfit, I kept my bag and shoes a similar neutral tan color to the sweater and pants. Both thrifted, the bag is New Directions and the boots are Aerosoles. Then I added pearls. I thought this made for a great work look.

Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2020 - New York Palette - Recap

I was going to jump right into the London Palette, but there have been some unforeseen problems, so I am going to put that off for a little bit. I usually do a recap post to show you all the the outfits at the same time, so that is what I am doing today.

Here is the whole New York Palette, along with the classic colors as well. Some people take the classic colors and build their outfits around them and simply add pops of the other colors for a more subdued approach to the palette. I think I need to try that some time. What keeps me from doing that more often is that I don’t have very many classic colored pieces. What I mean is, I don’t have a whole suit with pants or skirt and a jacket in any of the classic colors. In fact, I don’t have very many dress clothes that aren’t made up of colors and prints. Maybe in the spring I will try to focus more on using the classics as a way to build an outfit and add in the regular palette colors as accessories. We’ll see.

I thought I would give you a few of my thoughts about each outfit and why I think it worked or didn’t after each picture.

Peach Nougat, Sandstone and Military Olive

I like this outfit. I am not a big fan of these colors, but I really think the three colors worked well together and I think people found this, a neutral palette they could relate too. Almost everyone has something olive in their closet, so the fact that this was a classic color was a win, in my opinion. Not everyone can wear dark blue, oxford gray or tan, but I think everyone can wear Military Olive.

Samba, Fired Brick and Sleet

I think this outfit might be my favorite out of this New York Palette. I like the mix of a more true red with the brick red, even thought my outfit in the photos didn’t do it justice. Putting the colors aside, however, I just like how this outfit looks polished and professional, but has a fun blend of bold and pastel colors along with the subtle print mix.

Amber Glow, Green Sheen and Almond Oil

This outfit was a surprise. Both my daughter and I thought these two colors just seemed to grate against each other, and well they might have, if I had worn a solid skirt with the solid top, but the printed skirt makes all the difference in the world. I also think the jacket and boots softened the whole look.


Classic Blue, Ultramarine Green and Blue Depths

We don’t often think of combining green and blue, or blue with blue, for that matter, but I think this worked. The blue shades are quite different, but worked well next to each other and the green really pops against the blues. I think the addition of the snakeskin patterned round bag completed the look perfectly.

Magenta Purple, Rose Tan and Sleet

I really love both of these colors, but I was not thrilled with this outfit. Don’t get me wrong, I love a comfy, boho outfit, but I don’t know if throwing the long pink sweater in with the floral maxi and the gray tee made for a great outfit. I could see this with a long gray sweater, a similar shade to the tee and then a necklace or a scarf in a similar shade to the Magenta Purple. I don’t think it is the worst outfit I have ever done, but not my fave.

Pantone - Fall/Winter 2020 - New York Palette - Magenta Purple, Rose Tan and Sleet

This is the last installment in the Pantone Fall/Winter 2020 New York Palette series. This has been an interesting palette with both rich, bold colors like Classic Blue, Samba and Ultramarine Green and the softer more muted neutrals like Peach Nougat, Sandstone and Almond Oil. Today’s last two colors are a mix of both the bold and muted elements. While Tuesday’s post was full on bold with Classic Blue and Ultramarine paired sided by side, today’s outfit takes the bright Magenta Purple and pairs it with the more subtle Rose Tan. As always, I’ve included a classic color to bring in a more foundational element.

This outfit, once again, has a rather bohemian vibe with the dark florals, fringe bag, and suede booties. I also feel that the more layered, relaxed look is often indicative of the boho style as well.

My long, pleated, floral maxi skirt is Chaps brand from Kohl’s. You can see this skirt styled for an earlier Pantone series back in Spring of 2018. I styled it with a blush top and gray sweater. The beauty of this piece is that it can be worn in any season and it is fully lined. I really like when a skirt is lined and I don’t have to wear a slip with it. This is especially nice in the cooler weather.

My Sleet colored slouchy tee is SO brand and also from Kohl’s. Do you know I have not been in a Kohl's store in months? Of course I haven’t been in any store, other than grocery stores and a few choice thrift shops since COVID happened. I have ordered a few things online from Kohl’s, so I can’t say I haven’t shopped there. Ha, ha. This tee is very light weight and has been retired to the summer clothing box for now. I have styled this on the blog before too. You can see it with another pleated skirt here.

My long pink sweater is also SO brand from Kohl’s. I bought two of these sweaters, as I mentioned a few weeks ago when I styled the maroon colored one. You can see that post here. This one is an XL and the maroon one is a L. This one is definitely bigger, but it is nice for wearing over multiple layers.

This fringe, suede bucket bag has been around for a few years and makes regular appearances on the blog. I actually haven’t used it as my day to day purse, because the top does not close. I like a little more security when I am out in public, as far as my bag goes. But it is cute and a great color for fall, so I keep it around.

I’ve styled these Easy Spirit ankle boots on the blog before too. I have numerous pairs of faux suede ankle boots. They are so easy to get on and off. They go with all manner of outfits and I can wear them with a variety of types and thicknesses of socks and hose. They are a nice alternative to dress shoes for work or an event where you want to look a little more put together, but still be casual.

I went for a layered look with my necklaces. I started with the ribbon choker, but gradually added the layered pearl choker and then the silver sphere pendant necklace. I like the look and I think it added a finishing touch to the outfit as a whole and still kept the boho vibe.

Pantone Fall/Winter 2020 - New York Palette - Classic Blue, Ultramarine Green and Blue Depths

The Pantone Color of the Year is Classic Blue , so once again we are featuring this medium blue color in the Pantone series. Back in January I showed you this color paired with a furry bomber jacket and plaid skirt. You can also see this color with a multi-print midi dress and with a bright pink top. Classic Blue is a blue that just about anyone can wear. If you prefer not to have this pretty blue to close to your face you could carry it in a lovely bag, or wear it as a brooch pinned on your lapel. I’ll provide a few shopping links at the end with various options.

I didn’t really have anything that seemed to perfectly match the Ultramarine Green, at least not until after the fact. My button up is actually a thrifted men’s shirt; a brand called Zylos. It has very small greenish blue print with white and almost has more of an aqua feel to it. Oh well, I have long ago given up on the idea of trying to be perfect. Ha, ha. You can see a closer look at the pattern, and see my thrifted, fringe, pendant necklace. Actually, the necklace is probably a closer match to the Pantone green.

My Classic Blue pants were a thrifted piece from shopping a friend’s closet. They are Ruby Road brand and I have styled them over and over on the blog. You can see them with a light blue sweater and scarf, Beetroot purple top from last spring’s series, an olive velvet jacket, a plaid bomber jacket, and a multi-print kimono.

I also threw on a few beaded bracelets, just for fun. Sometimes wearing a scarf or jewelry isn’t so much to help with the outfit as a whole, but just to enjoy something I have. Since I rarely go any where other than the grocery store, I occasionally throw on some bracelets, just because I have them and they are pretty.

I thought this outfit would be perfect for my round Nine West snakeskin print bag. It think it adds an element of fall color to this more classic looking outfit.

My shoes are my old stand by thrifted Relativity loafer heels. If I had an office job, I would probably wear these a lot. They are a nice height for a stacked heel and fairly comfortable.

As it is in the graphic, it seems to be more of a forest green color, which I do like. I like how these three colors worked together into an outfit that would be perfect for a day at the office or a date night with your significant other.

Pantone Fall/Winter 2020 - New York Palette - Amber Glow, Green Sheen and Almond Oil

The colors in today’s post are more pastel, but still encompass colors we think of when fall comes to mind. Oranges and yellows are obvious as we look at the trees around us. The Almond Oil color is an off white. When I was growing up, we never wore white after labor day. Our white shoes, bags, dresses, skirts and pants were all put away until the next year. I can still remember going out shoe shopping with my mom before Easter, because that was always when we would get out our white shoes to wear to church. Obviously, those days are gone, but many people still like the idea of wearing white in the summer and darker colors during the cooler, darker months of the year. Almond Oil might be a good alternative for those of you who would rather stay away from a pure white for the Fall/Winter seasons.

You’ve see this Roz & Ali maxi skirt numerous times on the blog. I got this one at dressbarn. All the dressbarn stores in the area have closed, but I know they still have a pretty major online shop, so be sure to check them out. I used this skirt last fall in the Pantone London series styled with a purple sweater. You can also see it styled with an orange tank top and a brown moto jacket.

My yellowish green short sleeve sweater is a thrifted Gap piece. It is a tad big, but I like the slouchy look of it and tucking it in works great with this skirt.

The cream colored jacket is a thrifted NY&Co. It is made of a stiff fabric with a good amount of stretch to it. It almost has a bit of a linen feel to it and it tends to be more wrinkly.

I opted for the orange for my jewelry. I love this tiered statement necklace and hardly ever get to wear it. I have two more in different colors. It just makes a lovely statement, especially in this outfit. It really makes the whole outfit look cohesive. Many people don’t want their outfits to have that kind of matching game, but personally I love it. There is a symmetry and completion about an outfit when it has this sort of cohesion.

My top handle bag is another Stone Mountain thrift find. It seems to match the Almond Oil color even better than the jacket.

Once again, I pulled out my Sonoma suede ankle boots. The small heel gives me less of a chance for tripping over the skirt. Ha, ha.

What do you think of these two colors? When my daughter was editing these photos, she said it seemed these two colors would grate on each other, but she really liked the outfit. Pairing a print with a solid in these colors definitely makes the outfit softer and easier on the eye. This is something I would definitely wear…if I had some place to go. Ha, ha.

Actual Amy - Layering Up

As most of you know, I love layers. Layering in these transitional times, from summer to fall, and fall to winter, gives us the ability to create outfits with even more interest and texture. Easy layering pieces include cardigans, blazers, jackets and scarves. These can all add a fun change to your wardrobe and give you layers to put on or take off as needed with the changing temperatures. We are expecting a warm spell these next few days, followed by falling temps for the beginning of October.

In today’s outfit, the focal point is a recent clearance find from Target. This A New Day striped blazer was uniquely different from my other blazers and jackets being that it is striped, so I knew I had to have it.

It was a chillier day when I took these pictures, so I already had the fall colored knit top and rust colored cardigan on in the house. We are hoping to make it until October before we turn on the heat. Ha, ha.

My knit, short sleeve multi-print top is a thrifted Loft piece. The rust colored cardigan is Croft & Barrow brand. There is some subtle print mixing going on here with the multi-print tee and the stripes on the blazer. This is one way to print mix without it being overwhelming. The solid color cardigan provides a border between the two prints, but you still see the mix.

These are my favorite thrifted jeans. This is an older brand called Kikit, which are only available from thrift retailers like Poshmark and Thredup. You can see how I styled these on the blog before with a leopard print blazer.

Less is more, when it comes to accessories for an outfit like this. This hand made pendent necklace is a simple piece, but makes just the right statement.

You’ve seen this pretty bag just recently on the blog when I used it with a fall colored fringe kimono.

I chose my black faux suede ankle boots. These are Natural Reflections which are a brand Cabela’s carries. My hubby and I go there every so often and usually pass through the shoe department to see what’s on sale. i really love the buckle detailing on these and I use them a lot throughout the cooler seasons.

Pantone Fall/Winter 2020 - New York Palette - Peach Nougat, Sandstone & Military Olive

Welcome to another round of Pantone colors. If you are new to my blog, the Pantone Color Institute is an entity that comes up with color palettes for two seasons a year - Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. These color palettes are referred to by members of the interior design and fashion community for designing spaces and clothing full of color and vibrancy. Many of their palette colors are meant to create a feeling of peace, unity and confidence whether at the office or on the runway.

Since becoming a Fashion Blogger in 2016 I have been drawn to the Pantone color palettes as a way to find inspiration for putting together outfits from the clothes in my closet. I enjoy all colors, so for me the two palettes put out by the Institute are a way to challenge myself to look at colors I might not normally wear in a different light. I hope you enjoy this series.

I am going to start with the New York Palette. You can see the entire palette at the end of this post. Instead of doing an intro the color palettes for both New York and London, I am just going to jump right in to the New York colors. As per usual, I am going to combine two palette colors with a classic color, which is also shown on the palette.

There are a number of these lighter more pastel tans on both palettes this season. This is not a color I would normally reach for, however, if you are more into pastels and lighter shades both Peach Nougat and Sandstone might be good for you.

When I originally put this outfit together I thought the sweater was more like Sandstone, but now seeing the pictures, it is much too yellow. However, the thrifted, tie-front tee has both colors in it, so I am making that my Pantone piece for both colors in this post. Even so, I do like the way this outfit came together with a rather neutral vibe.

My camel colored, waffle knit, thrifted cardigan is Old Navy brand. I love this piece and it is the perfect weight for these changing temps. I like that it is a little longer, has pockets and will go with just about anything in my closet. It is showing a little bit of pilling, but these days, if we can wear distressed jeans, why not wear pilly sweaters. Ha, ha.

My Gloria Vanderbilt utility pants have been a staple in my wardrobe and you have seen these appear on the blog over and over. I am so thankful they are stretchy, because my weight has fluctuated over the last few years about eight pounds, up and down, many of you know the feeling. At least with pants that have some flex you can still wear them, even when your weight is up a bit. This year Military Olive is on the New York palette as a Classic Color and on the London palette as a main color. Not sure why that is, but you’ll see I use the color both ways, once you see the London palette colors.

This cross necklace was the perfect accompaniment for this outfit. It goes so well with the shirt, it looks like they are made to go together.

Keeping the look ultra casual allowed me to carry this fabulous hobo bag from Fossil. Also a thrift find. Shhhh! Don’t tell my hubby. He claims I have too many purses. Is that even a thing? Ha, ha.

Lastly, I chose these well worn, thrifted combat boots from Falls Creek. I have had these for quite a while and they are definitely showing their wear, but again, if you like a grunge look, like I occasionally do, then well worn is just right.

Outfit Inspiration - Pinterest Fall Fashion

Right now is a great time to look to Pinterest for inspiration for fall outfits. There are so many outfit combinations complete with fall colors, textures and accessories. I don’t know why I haven’t used Pinterest before this to find inspiration for an outfit. This pin is from my Pinterest board titled Fall Fashion. I wanted to find something that would be a subtle shift from summer to fall, to provide both the colors and layers we often associate with this wonderful season.

I decided to give you a three for one deal today too. Instead of just showing you the original Pinterest inspired outfit, I thought it would be fun to show you two additional outfits I came up with as I was getting out my camera to take pictures. The only changes I made were the outer layer, bag and shoes. You’ll see how easy it is to come up with multiple combinations using the same two pieces.

Outfit 1 - The Pinterest Copy

Yes, there is a huge, red stop sign behind me and yes, my tee is wrinkled. I am going to blame it on the pretty bird bling. Of course I didn’t realize it until after I had taken the pictures. The joy of taking my own shots.

I am a huge fan of striped shirts and have many in my closet in just about every color. I have short sleeve tees, long sleeve tees and sweaters. For this outfit, I decided to choose a thrifted, short sleeve, J.Crew tee since it is still fairly warm during the day. I also love the embellished bird on this piece that I found thrifting. When I find a unique piece like this I grab it. It is just a step above ordinary. Of course with the sweater on, you can’t see it as well, but in the warmer part of the day, I will probably have the sweater off.

For an outfit like this any pair of skinny jeans will do. In fact, you don’t even have to wear skinnies. A pair of boyfriend or bootcut jeans would work just as well and give the outfit a totally different vibe. These jeans are a.n.a brand. I wear these all summer long. They are stretchy and the cropped length is perfect for warm weather. In fact, I usually wear them turned up, but as fall approaches, the ankle length is just right.

My cognac colored sweater is an old thrift find and is a brand called Maison Jules. It is a soft waffle weave and while I can button it, I usually just leave it open, for more of a fly away look. It has a bit of a high-lo hemline and side slits.

I’ve had this bronzy cross body bag for a while. I think it is a nice color for fall.

For shoes, I chose my white Keds, since the Pinterest outfit was styled with white sneakers.

Outfit 2 - Utility Jacket and Booties

For this next look, I simply swapped out the sweater for an olive, utility jacket. This one is St. John’s Bay from JCPenney. You could use any color utility jacket. I have a number of these, ahem…just like my striped shirts…ha, ha.

You can see I also swapped out my white sneakers for my olive, SO ankle boots. In addition I changed the small bronze cross body bag for this large mint green tote. I added the checked scarf as a pop of color and if it was extra cool, I could put the scarf around my neck.

I took these photos all at the same time of day, with pretty much the same settings, so I am not sure what happened to these. I was sort of misting out, so I don’t know if the weather conditions had anything to do with it.

Outfit 3 - Plaid Jacket and Combat Boots

My final ensemble was chosen for the cooler temps that will soon be upon us. I love this plaid jacket with sherpa trim I got at Maurices at the end of last season. You can see how I first styled it on the blog in a similar look here.

My black bag was a recent thrift store find. I had been looking for a black one and this Scarlton tote was perfect.

Once again, my Seven Dials combat boots are featured. I have used these frequently on the blog, since I got them. You can see them styled with a dress, a plaid skirt, distressed jeans, a denim skirt, and black faux lace pants. I like to give you the links to these previous posts, so you can see how one piece, like a jacket or a pair of boots can be used over and over again.

Here are the three outfits side by side.

Do you have a favorite? It is fun to see what combinations you can come up with for different pieces in your wardrobe. These are all looks I would return to again and again. I would call this a formula that works for me. A pair of jeans, a striped tee and then some sort of top layer in the form of a sweater, jacket or other topper. You could do the same thing with a graphic tee.

Flat Lays in the Flesh - Dark Florals

For those of you just joining me on the blog, I am doing a short series based on the Fall Trends 2019 flat lays that I did back in September. You can see those original posts by clicking on the links: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4. I’ve been discussing how a flat lay can present how an outfit might look, but only from a more two dimensional view. Actually putting a person into the outfit is three dimensional and helps you see how the pieces go together and fit on the human body. In this case it is my human body, with all of its lovely flaws. Ha, ha

This week’s outfit was based on the dark floral trend which was prominent this fall. Dark florals are moody, mysterious and melodramatic and that is why I like them. Dark florals want to be noticed, but are just as happy being partially hidden under a jacket, sweater or blazer. So what does this flat lay look like in the flesh?

This teal floral bomber jacket was a late summer purchase from National an online women’s clothing retailer, that I did a sponsored post for back in May. You can see that original post here. After working with National, I regularly received their catalogues and had my eye on this fun jacket. I was able to purchase it at a good discount, so ordered it straight away. The jacket is fully lined, has soft banding around the neck, sleeves and bottom and a durable metal zipper that is easy to zip.

This thrifted Jeans by Buffalo floral tee goes perfectly with the color of the bomber jacket. You can see the same teal color in the top and they look like they were meant to be together. Here is a picture of the top without the jacket, just so you get an idea of the shape. I like the longer tunic length hi-low hem and the a-line cut of this top.

The pattern on the top is only on the front. The back and sleeves are a simple, basic black. I’ve been thinking of pairing this with a black button up or a turtleneck so I can have the warmer layers without covering up the pretty print. I think I’d also like to try this with white jeans and a red jacket. What do you think? The colors in the shirt make me think of Christmas, so this might be a good top to wear throughout the holiday season.

These Rock and Republic jeans from Kohl’s have a good deal of stretch, otherwise I would never fit into them. Ha, ha. I like the bling and the distressing and I figure as long as my bum is covered I can still wear these because they are very comfy, even though they are tight.

My tall black boots were a clearance find at DSW. Don’t you love the clearance racks? They are definitely worth checking out from time to time at any store you may shop at. i love the detailing on these and the bright red zipper casement along the back. Sorry about the cheeky bum!

I went with red for my other accessories, and even though the necklace doesn’t make a bold statement, I like the way the gold chain and charms give added texture to the top.

Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2019 - London Palette Recap

It’s time for a recap of the all the Pantone - Autumn/Winter -2019 - London Palette colors. There were things about these colors that I liked better than the New York Palette, but each of them had colors that I felt comfortable wearing. I’ll explain my favorite from this series after a review of the outfits.

I am having a hard time picking just one outfit from this series that I liked the best. I really liked Cranberry and Chicory Coffee. I have always been a fan of browns, but I just love the result when it is combined with the medium pinky red of Cranberry. I also like the long line of this outfit and I think the long Rutabaga open front cardi helped with the illusion.

My next fave would be the boho vibe of Butterscotch and Grapeade. If you would have asked me a few years ago if I would wear an outfit with these two colors together, I would have said no way. Yellow and purple? You have to be kidding, but there is something whimsical about this outfit and the color combination is only part of it. The colors are happy and fun, but the print of the skirt, the fringe bag and the fun textured boots really give this outfit its bohemian style.

Finally, I really like the last outfit. Even though, I wouldn’t necessarily wear a color like Hazel all on it’s own, I do like the way this color pairs so well with the grays and the blues in outfit. I also like the subtle plaid print mixing. It is obvious, but it doesn’t overwhelm the eye like some print mixing is capable of doing.

Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2019 - London Palette - Intro

Past Pantone seasons, I have tried to combine both the New York and the London color palettes into one series. Most of the time there were plenty of overlapping colors, so I was able to take colors from both palettes to make my outfits. This fall there were only two overlapping colors, Galaxy Blue and Bluestone. It was for this reason, that I decided to break the series into two parts. We just finished the New York palette last week. You can see a recap of those outfits here.

Today’s post will introduce you to the London palette and give you a few sneak peeks at the upcoming outfits.

Both the New York and the London palettes included numerous fall yellows, reds and browns. They both included a green, some blues and hues with pink undertones, but the London palette is the only one to include purple, which I thought was interesting since purple is trending right now. Purple has always been one of my favorite colors, so I was excited to see it included on this palette.

In all honesty, I like this palette better than the New York one. I always veer towards richer more saturated colors, rather than pastels and I felt that I had an easier time finding pieces in my wardrobe that better personified the color palette. In this palette we find words like vital, fortifying, robust, delicious, rich, baked, arresting, mellow and distinctive to describe the colors.

Pantone - Autumn/Winter - 2019 - Orange Tiger and Eden

I mentioned in Tuesday’s post on Sugar Almond and Dark Cheddar, that not everyone can or wants to wear orange. I love orange, but it has to be the right shade for me to wear it near my face. Some oranges make me look sallow or washed out. Today’s colors are bold and what caused me to put these two colors together, was the contrast of dark with light, deep with bright. Today’s colors are a “fearless” Tiger Orange, and a rich “stately forest green” called Eden. I think Pantone’s description of these colors is perfect.

These two colors are the first in this series that I felt truly matched with the Pantone colors. I looked for a while in thrift stores for the perfect green and I really think this dark cardi nailed it. the sweater is Jaclyn Smith brand.

These bright orange pants are Worthington brand and I got them at JC Penney a number of years ago. These are more of a skinny leg trouser than a wide leg trouser. I got them for the bright color and do find occasions in the spring, summer and fall to wear them. You can see how I styled these with a floral tunic here.

This cream colored tank top is a thrifted Loft piece. I actually have two of them, found on different occasions, but the exact same style. This one is a large and has a sheen to it, that you can’t really see in the picture. The other one I have is a medium and is more of a true white. Why do I need two of these? Comfort and ease of wear. They work perfectly for something like this, but I will also be able to use them as a light weight under layer when the temps grow cold. The piece is banded on the bottom, making for a great fit without showing off the bulges. Here are a few to look at.

The scarf I added was another thrifted piece. I don’t have many pieces that are cream or ivory, like this. I am also looking for a cream fisherman sweater and/or turtleneck. I don’t need anything, because I am a clothes horse, but every now and then, I do realize I am lacking something I would love to incorporate into my closet. What about you? In addition to the scarf I wanted to add a long charm pendant necklace to break up the plain back drop of the tank. I think this outfit would have been equally good with a printed tank under the sweater.

My other accessories included my Vera Bradley tote bag and my thrifted Mossimo sneakers.

Pantone Autumn/Winter - New York Palette - Intro

For those of you who like my Pantone color series, you’ll will be glad to know, it is finally here. Due to scheduling issues my photographer and I finally got together to take the pictures and let me tell you, it was another scorcher! Ha, ha. I don’t know why, but it seems whenever we are scheduled to do pictures the weather is unreasonable. When we did the Pantone 2019 Spring/Summer shoot it was snowing. Now for the Pantone 2019 Autumn/Winter shoot it was sunny and hot. Oh well, there is no planning for the weather around here.

This year the color palettes between New York and London are quite varied, so I decided to do this in two separate series, rather than combining the palettes. Starting on Thursday i’ll be covering just the New York palette. When that palette is finished then I will cover the London palette.

This year’s New York palette is made up of colors described with terms like spicy, adventurous, extroverted and appetizing. Hopefully these descriptors will whet your appetites to follow along with this fall’s color series.

I really like this season’s colors. I feel like there is a good mix of tones that will give all skin colors lots of choices. The palette has a wide array of colors from classic blues, reds and green, to earthy browns and oranges to lighter pastels. Some of my favorites are Bluestone, Eden and Sugar Almond.

In addition, Pantone also includes a palette of classic colors which work well to use as the foundation of your outfit or as add on colors to tone down the brighter more jazzy color combinations. I can’t wait for you to see the outfits I came up with right out of my very own closet.

Fall Trends - 2019 - Part 2

If you missed last Thursday’s post, I’ve started a short series on Fall 2019 Trends. Every season the runways are filled with with new colors and trends. This fall the trends include things we are familiar with like animal prints and metallic sheens to rebooted trends like patchwork, tiny bags and shoulder pads. I encourage you to pick and choose the ones that you feel most comfortable with and maybe go for one that pushes you a little outside your comfort zone.

The next trend I am featuring would, perhaps, be the one that would be a little outside my comfort zone, but one that I felt I could easily adapt to with pieces I already had in my closet.

Trend 3 - Romance Gone Goth

If you want to see the original looks from the runway click on this article by Who What Where titled These are the 9 Biggest Fall 2019 Trends, Period. Of course that is a matter of opinion. Ha, ha. I changed the name to Goth rather than Grunge, because if you do your research, Goth is head to toe black with lace, leather and more form fitting wear. Grunge is more about torn jeans, flannel shirts, Doc Martens, and while black is a common grunge color, other dark colors like maroon, forest green and indigo are also common.

My version is a lot less revealing and personifies me. My outfit is, also, not true Goth, because it has color. It is also not really Grunge either. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. Do your research.

For this look I chose three pieces that I would term romantic. This short sleeve ruffled top was thrifted and is Loft brand. The sheer blouse that I put underneath was my way to add another fall trend, that of dark florals, as well as add, just a touch of color. This is a brand called Kensie. I also thought the wide belt and the cross choker added a touch of metal that is often associate with Goth outfits.

These Apt. 9, faux lace pants I’ve worn before on the blog, You can see them styled with a multi-print tunic, and with a shimmery taupe top. Lace is another fabric or pattern that we often associate with romance, so it seemed appropriate to use them for this Romance Gone Goth outfit.

My black, Seven Dials, combat boots seemed the perfect choice for this faux Goth look. True Goth would not have any brightly colored patches.

The bag is totally not Goth, but I thought it went nicely with the green in the floral under-top.

Trend 4 - Layering Knits

I think this is a fun one, although not for everyone. Most women our age are in the throes of menopause and the last thing you want to do is start wearing layers of heavy knits, but for those of you who are typically cold most of the time in the winter months, this trend is for you.

I love the way this outfit turned out in the flat lay and I may actually put this on when it gets colder and see how it looks. I am not a big leggings fan, but this just looks so fun, I may have to do it…yes, getting outside my comfort zone again.

The sweater was a clearance find at Christopher and Banks. I love the lace up detail on the lower sides. This sweater has an open front with no closures and falls right about mid to lower thigh. It is a medium weight, so good for pairing over this thrifted over-sized Merona sweat shirt.

Isn’t Mr. Bear, just the cutest guy ever? He’s styling that cable knit sweater and I’m sure he’s heading right into his cozy hole to sleep for a good long while. He looks so happy. Believe me, I’d be happy too, if I knew when winter was on its way, I could go into a cozy hole and just sleep until spring arrived. Ha, ha.

These leggings are Lu La Roe and my daughter gave them to me. I have been waiting on the perfect outfit to pair these with and I think this just may be it. Because I opted for these leggings I decided to wear a recently thrifted pair of boots, high lighting the lighter yellows and tans in the leggings and sweatshirt. These boots are a brand called Rock & Candy by Zigi. While this is a brand I had never heard of before, it appears that they are available at places like Nordstrom Rack, Famous Footwear and Shoe Carnival.

Since the outfit already has a lot going on I went for a simple green clutch.

I added the scarf as an after thought as a way to tie the whole outfit together.

Summer Maxi Dress for Fall

I’m sure many of you have heard about transitional dressing. This has to do with taking a clothing piece from one season and changing it up to make it wearable in the next season. With our seasons here in the mid west being so varied, it is essential to have pieces that can be worn for more than one season. Perhaps that is one of the reasons I love jeans. You can wear them any time of year. Ha, ha. However, this is not going to be a post about jeans. You already know how much I love those! This post focuses on a summer maxi dress that was a new purchase from late last spring.

Some of you who regularly follow me might remember this dress from my summer series on maxi dresses. You can see the whole dress and the original post here. This bohemian style maxi boldly stated it wanted to come home with me when I saw it on the rack at Nordstrom Rack this past May. I knew as soon as I tried it on that it would be a versatile piece and would easily take me from summer into fall.

In order to make the light weight dress fall ready I decided I needed layers. I knew I wanted to style it with knee high boots to add warmth on the lower level. While I didn’t wear tights for this photo shoot, I would add them if I was going to have the dress on for a longer period of time.

I do love wearing boots. They are a great way to change up an outfit and add warmth. With so many styles from ankle booties to over the knee types what is not to love. And now there are so many more colors!

Here are a few brown pairs, that I like at decent price points.

To add layers at the top I chose this thrifted sunflower yellow sweater cardigan. The brand name is Callaway. A simple cardigan adds a warm layer without a lot of bulk and they come in so many pretty prints and colors. Here are a few to look at. With Christmas coming, I am sure you need ideas for all those girls on your list. Ha, ha.

In addition to the sweater I also grabbed my thrifted brown moto jacket. I have styled this many times on the blog. It is one of my favorite thrift finds and most often I wear it as an extra layer in the winter time, rather than as an outerwear jacket. For this particular fall day this and the sweater were just the right amount of layers.

Here are a few shopping options.

My accessories are pretty simple. This layered necklace I found somewhere or other on the clearance rack. The nice thing about these types of necklaces is there is no work involved. Some days that is just exactly what I need.

My bag is a navy Vera Wang bag that is also thrifted.

One of the things that I like about fashion blogging is learning new ways to use my clothes. It used to be that we had our summer clothes and our winter clothes. I still go through the process of putting things away and pulling out different things each season, simply because I am a clothes horse and there is no way I could have all my clothes out at the same time. Also, I tend to reach for what is in my comfort zone. In the winter I like to be warm, so I like my heavy sweaters and added layers. In the summer I like less layers and lighter material. However, since I have started blogging I have learned that there are ways to extend the seasonal pieces and get more wear out of them. This outfit is the perfect example.
