KIckin' It with Kimonos - Gray and White Plaid

Today, I am beginning a series on wearing kimonos. My kimono collection has grown in size and I really love how they can dress up an outfit and give it a whole different feel and look. The kimono has been around for hundreds of years and were, at one point in time, the traditional garb in Japanese cultures. Today most instances of kimono wear in Japan are for more formal occasions and typically worn by older people as a way to honor others at funerals and weddings. They are also used for cultural festivals and plays.

In the fashion world the pieces we refer to as kimono are only similar to their predecessors in the cut of the fabric. While traditionally the kimono was made of specific types of fabric such as hemp or for more formal occasions, silk, today the kimono is found in all fabrics and sizes. The word itself has come to embrace a much broader meaning and type of piece than what it was traditionally. Now anything we thrown on over a top that is long, flowy and has sleeves we refer to as a kimono, even though some of these pieces are actually more specifically called ponchos, capes, and ruanas.

Today’s look revolves around a kimono I found at Kohl’s online in the clearance section. I didn’t have anything that was plaid, as far as a kimono goes, so I thought it would be a fun addition to my collection.

This piece is shaped more like a traditional kimono, coming down to my knees and sewn in a t-shape with the side seems and attached sleeves. This Apt. 9 kimono is light weight and a bit see through, which is no problem since I am wearing it over other things.

I wanted to keep the look more monochrome, yet when searching for a top to wear, I knew this Wonder Woman tee would be perfect. I found this tee a few years ago when the movie came out and I just love the message. I love words, as you no doubt know since I am a writer, but I like when the words that are being displayed, either on our walls at home, or on our clothing, mean something significant.

You can see the small, red, Wonder Woman insignia at the bottom of the list of words. I pulled out that color by choosing a few red accessories. My necklace and bracelet are both just simple chains of beads. My structured bag was a recent thrift store find. I like the color and the texture and thought it will be a great bag for fall, but why not use it in the summer too?

You’ve seen these Christopher and Banks, pull on, white ankle pants numerous times on the blog. They are a staple in my closet for summer outfits where I want white pants.

I wore my Saucony, gray and white sneakers to complete this casual look.

So what do you think of this outfit? Frankly, right now, with as hot as it has been I have been wearing as few layers as possible. Ha, ha. However, a kimono is a great way to add a layer for those air conditioned places, that we all are not supposed to go to right now! Eye, yie, yie.

Summer Outfit - Faux Lace Dress - Casual

I honestly wasn’t sure how to style this faux lace dress in a casual way, so I started by thinking what makes an outfit more casual. We usually associate certain shoes, bags and accessories as being either more casual or more dressy. There is also the option of adding other pieces to make a look more casual, like I did in my geometric maxi dress post, where I simply slipped on a graphic tee, to bring the look down to a more casual level. I also used more casual accessories like the straw bag and hat. I followed the same formula for this outfit.

I was sort of going for an artsy-writer look with this outfit…whatever that is. Ha, ha, ha. I was thinking if I wore this dress to a coffee shop to work on writing, rather than a night out to a show, what would I do differently? First off, I added my oversized, thrifted, pinstripe Izod button up, as a light weight jacket, for any air conditioning a coffee shop might offer.

This shirt is a very pale purple color and has gray pinstripes. To jazz up the outfit with a little more color I pulled out this cute fish scarf, but instead of putting it around my neck, I tied it to my bag. I thought the purple and green in the scarf pulled the outfit together.

The purple bead pendant goes so well with the purple in the shirt and the scarf. It also gives the outfit an added casual, boho feel. To keep that casual boho vibe going I thought the multiple strand green wrap bracelet a good choice.

This slouchy, thrifted, American Eagle hobo bag has made an appearance multiple times on the blog. It is good to have a few pieces in your bag arsenal that lean completely towards casual or dressy. It makes getting dressed so much easier. This hobo bag does just that and is a go to, if I want to make an outfit look dressed down.

Shoes are another thing that will either elevate or make an outfit more casual. I love these suede oxfords that I found on clearance a number of years ago at DSW. If I could have found them in multiple colors, I would have bought them all. I would love to have a pair in blue, green, red, brown…you get the idea. The thing I like about them, is they feel a tad tight when I put them on, but after having them on they are so comfortable. They are Naya brand.

What do you think of this outfit? Not every piece in your wardrobe will necessarily translate into a more dressy or more casual look, but I wanted to show you there are ways to think outside the box when it comes to your clothes. It not only gives you more outfit options, but enables you to get more wear out of each piece.

Summer Outfit - Faux Lace Dress - Dressy

This week my summer outfit piece is a dress I bought at Kohl’s a while back on the clearance rack. I’ve had it hanging in my closet for a couple of years, I’d say, and it was time to either wear it or get rid of it. I hadn’t even taken the tags off. I’m sort of silly that way. Do you ever buy things and then they hang in your closet and you forget you even had them? I think I get into that dilemma, when I buy things on clearance at the end of a season, then I put them away, because a new season has started and I forget all about them until they are unearthed like some sort of ancient treasure.

This AB Studio dress is really nothing more than a fancy t-shirt dress with a lace pattern on it. It has a zippered back, but I can easily slip it over my head without even undoing the zipper. The other lovely thing about this dress is that it has deep side pockets which aren’t visible at all. I typically would not wear a dress this short, but I thought I would push myself outside my own box. Originally, I thought the dress would be cute with leggings and boots in the colder months. I need to try that too. I decided to wear black hose to cover my veiny legs and to give the outfit a leaner, longer look.

I chose a few pieces of jewelry that I wore to my oldest daughter’s wedding a few years ago. I also used my blingy, silver clutch to make the outfit look more dressy.

I thought my black Clark peep toe shoeties finished out the outfit perfectly, though you could have done black heeled sandals or even a heeled ankle boot.

My post wouldn’t be complete without a silly picture of me. I hope these bring a smile to your faces, because we all need things to keep us smiling these days. In reality, I was trying to adjust my glasses which tend, not only to slide down my nose, but also to be lower on one side than the other. Ha, ha. However, I think this is my stereotypical “librarian” face. Now, we all know that most librarians are very friendly and helpful, but for some reason all the old movies and shows always made them out to be older women with an attitude.

Summer Outfit - Geometric Maxi Dress - Casual

Tuesday you saw this dress with a pretty, flowy, pink shrug, heeled sandals and gold accessories. Any maxi dress can be dressed up or dressed down. I did a series called Marvelous Maxis, a few summers ago using some of the other maxi dresses in my closet. I tried to think outside the box when it came to styling them. You can see how I styled a plain, black tank dress, that I would typically think of wearing to the beach for a snazzy night on the town. You can also see how I added a dark wash chambray shirt to this multi-print maxi to make it look more casual. Here is one more, a multi print one that I finally let go, styled both casual and dressy. I had to let it go, due to weight gain and I really didn’t like the way the horizontal lines fell. If you are not going to wear it, let it go!

Today’s casual take on the geometric dress from Tuesday is right up my alley. I love the way this all came together and taking this from dressy to casual was so easy.

In case you missed Tuesday’s more dressy post, this geometric maxi dress is Calvin Klein brand and the top part is a simple black tank. All I did to dress it down, was swap out the flowy, pink shrug and add a cute, thrifted, black and white Disney graphic tee. The tank part of the dress and the tee are both light weight enough that combining the two, doesn’t make the outfit seem any warmer. I did the side tie, to make the tee less boxy.

To make the outfit more casual and give it the added summer vibe, I chose a straw bag and a straw sun hat.

Instead of my wedge heeled sandals, I wore a pair of black flat cage sandals. Flat shoes to me, typically seems more casual than heels.

Summer Outfit - Geometric Maxi Dress - Dressy

Today’s outfit revolves around a maxi dress my mother-in-law passed along to me. She had bought it for herself, but then didn’t really like it as well as she thought. When she showed it to me, and asked if I wanted it, I said sure. I actually wasn’t sure how to style it, or rather, didn’t give it a lot of thought since I haven’t been reaching for my maxi dresses all that often. If it was just me and my hubby and I wasn’t hanging out with a nine year old, I might wear one more frequently, as they are comfortable and a fun way to dress for summer. However, when I started thinking about featuring a few summer outfits for the blog, I wanted to show off this fun maxi dress.

The dress is Calvin Klein brand and features a tank style top attached at the waist to an a-line style skirt featuring a geometric pattern of rectangles and squares. The bottom is fully lined. Macy’s carries a broad line of dresses with all lengths and styles. I’ll include a few shopping links below.

The pink shrug doesn’t match the pink in the dress, but I felt like it worked. This shrug is a thrifted Forever 21 piece. It is sheer and flowy, making it the perfect way to dress up and outfit.

Gold accessories just seem to take the outfit up another notch. My thrifted gold necklace and clutch go with the gold beads and baubles on my wrist.

I do get rather silly when we are taking pictures, especially when we are in a place where other people are around. I already feel silly getting my picture taken, but then if there are people walking by, I feel even sillier. Ha, ha. Anyway, sometimes, my daughter catches me in my shenanigans. I felt like I was up against the firing squad wall. This is another spot at the Toledo Botanical Gardens.

By the time this is posted I will have gotten a much needed hair cut. My ends are looking terrible and I need to get some of the length taken off. Have you been to the hair dresser recently? I know for a lot of people that was one of the first things they did after things started opening back up a bit.

These are a different pair of black wedge sandals, also thrifted, but a brand called Connie.

Summer Outfit - Leopard Print Skirt - Casual

Hi everyone. How are you doing? I just finished reading an article written by a woman whose whole family contracted COVID. They are all struggling through it. Her husband was in the hospital, but now is home. Both of her kids got it, but they are slowly progressing. She has it as well, but is managing at home with oxygen. I also read another article this morning that yesterday was the highest recorded day of new cases in the US since April. It is very disheartening and discouraging, but it is, what it is. Don’t stop taking precautions. Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Keep your distance. Okay, enough on that, now time for an outfit.

Tuesday I showed you my thrifted leopard print skirt in a more dressy, work wear friendly style. Today, I am showing off that same skirt, but with a more fun, casual flair.

If you didn’t read the last post, this thrifted skirt is a brand called Who, What, Wear. It is a very light weight material, but it did seem to get full of static when I put it on. I am going to have to see if washing it with fabric softener makes any difference, plus I dried it on the line, since I don’t have a dryer at the moment. As long as the weather is good, I like to hang clothes out in the warmer weather anyway, so I decided I wanted to get the dish washer, which we just replaced last month, paid off, before we purchase a new dryer. The joys of real life. Ha, ha.

I kept the same off white thrifted St. John’s Bay tank top, but swapped out the black polka dot blazer for my thrifted Rue 21 cropped denim jacket. This is one of my favorite thrifted pieces. It is so versatile and I pair it with everything. The fact that it is cropped with 3/4 length sleeves makes it the perfect piece for summer outfits, when you don’t really need a full blown jacket.

I changed my accessories to reflect a more casual vibe. Sometimes it is fun to wear multiple necklaces together, so I wore a gold and cream beaded choker with a longer gold charm pendant necklace.

I chose my thrifted yellow, Elle tote bag because I like the way it went with the skirt and I thought it added another dimension of texture and interest to the outfit.

My Mossimo sneakers were also a thrift find. One of the Goodwill stores I go to has multiple new items from Target. They must be items that are discontinued, but they are brand new with the labels still on. How fun is that! These are not sneakers I would wear for a long day on my feet, but I thought they were fun for occasional wear and for the blog.

Summer Outfit - Leopard Print Skirt - Dressy

I decided after finishing up my Pantone series, to do a few weeks of summer outfits, using pieces from my closet and showing how to wear them two ways; a dressed up version and a more casual version. Today’s summer piece is a thrifted leopard print, asymmetrical skirt that I scored at a Goodwill back before the pandemic ever hit. This is a Who, What Wear piece, which is typically found at Target.

These photos were taken at the beautiful Botanical Gardens here in Toledo, which are very close by. I tend to forget they are there, which is ridiculous, because they are so nice for walking, taking pictures, clearing your head and they even have a huge playground, which is now reopened. I may have to get my grandson over there on a day when it is not too hot.

Here you can see up close the uneven hem of the skirt. The skirt is very light weight, but unfortunately when I put it on, it became full of static. I ended up putting a slip on, which helped a little bit, but static was still an issue. I guess I need to add fabric softener next time I wash it.

For more of a dressed up work look, I added my polka dot Black Label -Evan Picone blazer. I have styled this on the blog before. You can see me wearing it with a burgundy tunic dress, a blue maxi dress, and a scarf print blouse. Because I knew we were going to be taking pictures at a location that might not have their bathrooms open yet, I decided to make my changes from dressy to casual as simple as possible so I could just do it at the car. When I was completely done with one outfit my daughter and I would drive back to her house where I would change into the next outfit. Yes, we get creative. Ha ha.

The thrifted, off white, St. John’s Bay tank top, was an easy top to just throw different jackets over without any fuss or muss. You’ll see that in Thursday’s post.

I kept my accessories fairly simple since I had some print mixing going on. My necklace used to belong to my daughter, and when she didn’t want it any more, I grabbed it. I like the ribbons and dangling beads. It makes for a unique piece. I opted for a simple wood bracelet and a off white clutch type cloth bag.

These Kenneth Cole - Reaction - black wedge sandals were also a thrift find and I have used them on the blog before. You can see them worn with two outfits styled around a bag. and an outfit with shorts.

Do you own a leopard print skirt? Is it one you could wear in the summer. I have two other leopard print pencil skirts. One is corduroy and great for cold weather and the other is a more medium weight, so could be worn in any season.

Pantone Spring/Summer - 2020 - Tanager Turquoise, Heritage Blue and Blanc de Blance

This is our last set of colors for this Pantone Spring/Summer 2020 series. Thursday I will do a recap of all the outfits from both palettes. Today’s blues are perfect for summer. Think tropical waters and blue skies and you have Tanager Turquoise and Heritage Blue. Pairing these two blues with white just seemed to be the right thing to do for a pretty summer outfit.

The basis for this outfit turned out to be a short sleeve floral sweater that I found while thrifting before the lockdown ever happened. I have yet to step back into a thrift store. I know many people are getting back out and resuming normal life, but I and my family have chosen to be a little more cautious. My husband and I have aging parents and we haven’t been able to spend any time since last fall visiting with them. Usually we spend the Thanksgiving through New Years holidays traveling to see our parents and other extended family, but this past fall, my job situation changed and I took on a seasonal job that did not allow for travel. Then, of course the pandemic happened. We miss our parents and hope to see them in a few weeks, Lord willing, but COVID is far from over.

Anyhow, this pretty sweater is Land’s End brand. It is perfect for these lingering cooler days of spring, before the really hot weather of summer begins, which for us, appears to be happening in just a couple of days. It is a medium weight with a crew neck and banded bottom. It has plenty of stretch so is easy to get on an off, although not like a regular tee shirt. Here are a few Land’s End tee’s to check out: leaf print, tropical, striped with ruffled sleeves, pale pineapple stripe, and here is a cute sleeveless polo as well.

I am also wearing one of my summer pants staples, my Christopher & Banks crop pants. I have used these numerous times on the blog. They are the perfect weight and thickness for summer and they have a banded waistline, so just pull on and off.

I added my light blue Croft and Barrow sweater that I have had for a number of years. I thought that this color mimicked the Tanager Turquoise in a softer more pastel shade. Now that I see the pictures, I think the blue flowers in the short sleeve sweater were a closer representation of that rather aqua blue color, with my purse being a closer shade to the Heritage Blue. Here are a few similar cardigans to look at: essential button up, seed stitch and another button up in darker colors.

I kept my accessories fairly simple since the floral sweater is doing all the talking. A few beaded bracelets, a bead and silver necklace that disappears in the sweater, the blue Rosetti cross body bag and my silver SO flats round out the outfit.

Pantone Spring/Summer - 2020 - Blush Beauty, Bossa Nova and Blanc de Blanc

Today’s two bright colors might seem like an unlikely pairing, but then if you have been following me for a while, you know the crazier the color combo the more I want to try it. In some ways these colors combined almost make the outfit seem monochrome. Blush Beauty is a pinkish orange, so we might say it is like salmon or coral. Bossa Nova is a dark red with a little bit of a brown undertone. I added a Classic color Blanc de Blanc which is white by any other name. I know that there are shades of white, but for all intents and purposes, white is white. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

My paisley short sleeve tunic top is a thrifted Old Navy piece. It has a lace up detail that is just for show, but the print is what drew me to it. I have always like paisley. It just makes me think of the 60’s and 70’s and lots of my Dad’s old ties. Ha. ha. Here is a look at the outfit without the jacket so you get a better view of the top.

My pants are W63 from dressbarn. I’ve styled these on the blog before. You can see them worn with a coral sweater, a multi print jacket, and with a LuLaRoe perfect tee. One thing I noticed as I looked back at these pictures and the one above, these pants are always wrinkled when I wear them. Part of that may be the material as it sticks to my legs, and part of it may be my chunky legs. Ha, ha.

Here you can see the lace up detail on the top and the thrifted distressed Rue 21 cropped jean jacket. This is another piece that has gotten frequent wear on the blog. See it with a floral midi dress and a maxi dress, a high-waisted skirt, dark wash jeans, and with a leopard print skirt.

I thought the white accessories were a good compliment to go with the white in the top. The Jaclyn Smith bag was thrifted and the Keds were a Kohl’s clearance purchase a year or two ago.

Pantone Spring/Summer 2020 - Storm, Fiery Red and Blueberry

Last week I was really struggling with all that was going on in the world and in our country, so I only posted once, and never did send out an email. I apologize for that. Sometimes, life is like a sucker punch to the gut and you have to step back and try to catch your breath. I am going to approach the subject of all that is happening and my own response to it on my Faith page tomorrow, so just know that I do feel this is important enough to talk about, but I do not think it needs to be done on my Fashion page. Be sure to look for that post tomorrow.

Today we are looking at two very bright and bold colors. When I thought about pairing Storm with Fiery Red, I knew I wanted to keep it as far away from looking Christmasy as possible. Obviously, Storm would never be mistaken for the typical Christmas green that we usually associate with that holiday, but things have changed. Christmas green and red are no longer the only color combinations in holiday decor. Still, I wanted this look to evoke a feeling of fierce femininity, so let me know what you think.

This thrifted, graphic tee from Old Navy is the perfect green and considering everything we have been going through, I love its positive message. Everything has beauty, we just need to look for it.

I had some sheets hanging out on the line on the day we took these pictures, so we had a little fun with it.

Rather than create an outfit with a full red piece, I thought I would show you an outfit where you use one color just in your accessories and wow, what a statement it makes! The Fiery Red bandana in my hair, the jewelry and the bag, add that bright red color, without being overwhelming. Some people feel less comfortable wearing bright colors and prefer to just stick to the classics, like navy, gray or black. Adding a bright color really boosts the overall look of an outfit.

My medallion print skirt is from Christopher and Banks last year. I like that it is light weight, and yet not at all see through. Win, win. I felt that it was a good match for the Blueberry Pantone classic color.

You’ve seen these loafer heels numerous times on the blog before. I got these thrifting and have had them for years, but they still look pretty good. The plus side of real leather. These are Relativity brand.

Pantone Spring/Summer - 2020 - Yellow Iris, Rose Brown and Cuban Sand

Today I am featuring two colors I was not quite sure what to do with. When I began searching for these colors in my closet I was sure I wasn’t going to be able to find them. Rose brown is an odd color; not exactly brown, but not really pink, it has a purplish feel to it. Yellow Iris was another tough one for me. I don’t have a ton of pastels in my wardrobe. I like jewel tones and earthy colors, so this pale yellow was stumping me. I have a lot of yellow in my wardrobe; bright yellow, mustard yellow, sunflower yellow, and so on, but not a lot of pale yellow. While Sunlight from the New York palette had an almost light beige or tan vibe to it, this Yellow Iris is strictly a pale yellow. This is what I came up with. Let me know what you think.

I found this floral embellished tee first when looking for these colors. The flowers bear a close resemblance to Rose Brown. This is a thrifted Christopher and Banks tee. The Yellow Iris button up is a thrifted White Stag piece and while not quite as dark as the Pantone color is similar enough. The next pieces I had that were a light yellow were too yellow. Ha, ha.

I added this brown woven belt, because it has a bit of that Rose Brown vibe going on as do the two necklaces I chose. They are definitely a darker brown color, but different than a regular brown, and I thought they went well with the tee.

The gold in the longer necklace made me reach for my gold clutch. You can also see that I added a few simple seed bead bracelets to add a touch more of the Rose Brown color.

My white crop pants I have styled on the blog before. You can see them styled with a dress in another Pantone shoot here. These are a thrifted St. John’s Bay brand.

I looked up the difference between a caged sandal and a gladiator sandal and discovered that there really is no difference. Many gladiator styles come up higher on the leg, much like a boot and involve some sort of lacing, but both gladiator and caged sandals are basically an open style of sandal with numerous straps coming across the foot. They can be open toe, thong or closed toe in variety. The gladiator style ones I have on are Massini brand. I like that they cover more of my foot than a sandal with only a few straps. They also have a small block heel, which I think makes them a little more dressy.

Pantone Spring/Summer - 2020 - Flame Orange, Blossom and Cuban Sand

Today’s colors are bright and light and make me think of late night bon fires and light pink peonies. The classic color of Cuban Sand makes me want to take my shoes off and walk on the beach. The combination of these three colors together makes for the perfect summer look, complete with my own version of print mixing and boho vibrations.

This very casual look revolves around my bright orange Worthington pants from JCPenney. I have styled these slimming skinny trousers many times on the blog before. You can see them with a dress, a sheer summery top, a dark green cardigan, and a multi print scarf. They are such a different color from what I normally wear and I like that I have been able to use them for so many different outfits. The fact that they are skinnies makes pairing them with a dress a fun option that I never would have thought of before.

My fringe, asymmetrical, open weave vest has been on the blog before too. You can see it styled with a pair of checked ankle pants. Say What brand is sold by a number of stores including Kohl’s, Target and Macy’s. I am not sure that this brand is as popular any more. Here is a fun shot of me twirling. In the second picture you can see the print at the top of the vest and notice the print mixing.

My thrifted, floral Croft and Barrow tee was really the inspiration for the outfit. Seeing as it had the orange and the light pink, I knew I could make this work. I am a sucker for floral anything. It is an easy place to find inspiration for an outfit and you don’t even really have to worry about accessorizing if you don’t want to.

You can see my Blossom colored necklace in the above pic as well. Another way I wear it is to double it so it looks more like a layered piece closer to my neck. I also chose a few light pink beaded bracelets to go with the necklace and bring more of the blossom color out.

I went for my George bag again from Walmart. While it is not exactly Cuban Sand, the patchwork mix goes well with the tan colors in the top and the vest.

My little thong sandals were a thrift find a few years ago. I don’t wear sandals all that much, but I wanted to give you all a feeling of summer. I would wear them a lot more, but I am very self-conscious about my bunions and my varicose veins. I know, I know! Get over yourself. Ha, ha. I’ll keep trying to push myself out of those boxes that confine me, but on the other hand we should choose to wear what makes us feel good about ourselves. Right?

Pantone Spring/Summer - 2020 - Classic Blue, Beetroot Purple and Oyster Mushroom

I am now starting the Pantone Spring/Summer London color palette. Once again, as you saw in the intro post from last Thursday these colors vary across the spectrum from blues and reds, to greens and purples. I like the variety in the Spring/Summer palette this year. There really are so many ways you could combine and wear these bright colors, so let my combinations be a spring board for your own creative style. Try combining different colors that you already have in your closet, rather than going out and purchasing new pieces. In addition, if you are more of a classic color kind of gal, think of these brighter colors as accent colors for choices in your jewelry, shoes, bags and scarves.

Once again, I am starting the series with the Pantone Color of the Year, which for 2020 is Classic Blue. These Ruby Rd. pants are a bit more like royal blue, but I thought they worked well enough. These pants were from a friend’s closet when she no longer wanted them. I have styled these repeatedly on the blog. You can see them with a blue sweater, a pink sweater, a plaid bomber jacket, and a colorful kimono.

My Beetroot Purple button up top is a piece I picked up from my daughter who was getting rid of it. It is A New Day brand. I would call this color fuschia, but I am not the one making up the names. Ha, ha. They can call it whatever they want, but basically it is a bright pink.

This light gray, or Oyster Mushroom moto jacket is another thrifted piece and Christopher and Banks brand. I love when I can find brands I already love at a thrift store. Especially older styles and colors that aren’t around any more. This is a simple, no frills jacket, which makes it perfect for this kind of outfit when the color is doing the talking.

I decided to do a mixed metals sort of thing with my accessories. The statement necklace and bracelet take on the gold hue of my shirt buttons, while my clutch and simple gladiator sandals go for more of a silvery look.

Pantone Spring/Summer - 2020 - Introduction: The London Palette

Tuesday I finished the New York Palette for the Pantone Spring/Summer 2020 season. I am not sure why they decided to start doing two palettes every season, but several years ago, they began posting both a New York and a London palette. I am sure it has something to do with the Fashion influence in both of these large metropolitan areas. Regardless, I like to make you aware of these color palettes, not to raise your awareness of the Pantone entity, but to show you how wonderful color is and to challenge you to think outside the box when it comes to combining and wearing colors.

Today I am introducing you to the London Color Palette. Many of the colors, while similar have different names and somewhat different shading. The Classic color palette is similar in that it contains a beige, white, dark navy blue and gray. I was just thinking it would be fun to do a Pantone series where the focus is on the classic colors with the other colors used to accessorize and compliment an outfit. Unfortunately, for this blogger, I don’t have many pieces that are just classic colors. Yes I do have a few things that are tan, white, navy and gray, but probably not enough to create a whole series of outfits, but then, if those proponents of capsule wardrobes could do it, I suppose I could too. I’ll have to think on that over the summer and see what the fall colors looks like.

I will confess, I haven’t even started putting outfits together for this series. Ha, ha. Rather than making that a priority over the last week, I was changing out my seasonal wardrobe and purging some things from my closet. I am trying everything on. With weight gain and post menopausal weight distribution changes I am finding many things I have don’t fit any more. Rather than hanging on to things with the hopes of losing weight and changing how my body looks, I’ve decided it is a good time to pare down and reevaluate what I feel comfortable in and what makes me feel confident. Many tees and tank tops are too tight, not only around the waist, but through the arms. Isn’t it crazy what just a few pounds can do?

I saw an amazing Instagram post from Arnold Schwarzenegger just last week, where he was giving a speech to the graduates of 2020. It was about ten minutes long and I’ve included it with this post. It was so encouraging and up lifting. He said one thing that really stood out to me about having a vision and keeping that vision in our minds as we work, train, learn and grow towards obtaining it. He knowingly shared that there will always be obstacles to overcome, but it is in that overcoming that we grow and finally obtain our dreams or visions.

I really felt encouraged to take that idea to heart. I want to lose weight. The weight I am at right now, is not comfortable for me and I don’t feel happy with it. The excess pounds are hard on my joints and on my heart. I have a vision to be a certain weight and to be healthier, so I am trying to keep that vision in mind as I evaluate what I can do differently in my eating habits, exercise and mind set to achieve that goal. In addition, I want to make a living at writing. In the same way, I am envisioning being an author for pay and trying to develop a plan for how to obtain that dream. Both of these things will take work. I have no doubt that I will fail, repeatedly, but instead of giving up, I want to dust myself off and start over. I don’t want to slide into that mindset of, “I can’t do this, so I might as well not try.”

God’s Word says,

I was also reading in My Utmost for His Highest the other day and Oswald Chambers said this:

“It is a continual struggle not to listen to the moods which arise as a result of our physical condition, but we must never submit to them for a second. We have to pick ourselves up by the back of the neck and shake ourselves; then we will find that we can do what we believed we were unable to do. The problem that most of us are cursed with is simply that we won’t. The Christian life is one of spiritual courage and determination lived out in our flesh.”

Moods are a huge thing for me. When I am up, I feel like I can get tons of things accomplished. When I am feeling down, I feel like am dragging my feet through sticky mud and can’t make progress in any area. Moods affect my productivity and my relationships to people and to myself. I think I need to do a whole blog post on just that idea, so maybe I’ll save that for later.

We don’t have to be failures. Yes we will fail. We will have obstacles thrown into our paths and for many of us that is a pretty regular occurrence, but they do not define who we are or what we can accomplish. Our perception and our belief have more to do with what we ultimately think about ourselves.

If the Pantone Color Institute can go about defining the color industry for thousands of businesses, fashion gurus and retail shoppers like us, than why can’t each of us have a vision for ourselves as to what we want to do and what we want to be? Let’s make it happen.

Pantone Spring/Summer - 2020 - Classic Blue, Chive and Navy Blazer

As usual, the names for the Pantone colors always amuse me. Classic Blue is pretty normal. Obviously, Chive makes me think of green onions and as you will see, the color is a pretty dark green. Navy Blazer is one of the classic colors and is your typical navy staple, which many of us have a piece or two in our closets. Since Classic Blue is the color of the year, I decided to start with it. The idea to combine it with Chive was a natural progression when I pulled out this thrifted summer midi dress.

This outfit centers around this thrifted OliviaRose dress that I got numerous years ago. Its pretty floral print combines blue, white and green a black background. I didn’t even have to think when I pulled this out of my closet. Classic Blue and Chive were the perfect pairing. An outfit like this really can be worn year round.

This bright blue scarf was gifted to me for Christmas and I used it to introduce the Pantone Color of the Year back in January. You can see that post here.

My faux suede blazer has a little more of a blue undertone than the Chive color, but I thought it was pretty close. This thrifted ISB Inc. blazer is meant to have a double breasted appearance when buttoned, but my figure right now will not allow for that. However, I think it looks just as nice left open since there are buttons on both sides.

You can see in the next picture how nicely the blazer fits through the back. I like that it is more fitted, rather than boxy. I was also trying something different with my hair.

This thrifted Simply Vera/Vera Wang bag has made multiple appearances on the blog as has my thrifted Relativity loafer heels.

I also added my sparkly Classic Blue bracelet, which was also a Christmas gift.

If you are not into wearing bold, bright colors, then these colors would be the perfect choice for you. You could easily make this pairing more summery by adding a white skirt or crop pants instead of the darker print dress. You could also wear head to toe white with a Chive colored blazer or sweater and just a few pops of Classic Blue jewelry. There are so many options, so never say never to any color.

Spring Trends 2020 - Actual Amy - Drawstrings, Chunky Jewelry and Fringe

This is the final post in my Spring Trends 2020 series. I hope you have enjoyed seeing the variety in the trends for spring and summer this year. Typically trends happen twice a year, just like the Pantone Colors; once in the spring, covering spring and summer and once in the fall, covering fall and winter. Even if you are not a trend watcher, I think it is fun to at least be aware of what is going on in that regard. It is a fun way to expand your thinking and your wardrobe, and if you do like a particular trend, chances are you will already have it in your closet.

Today’s outfit is a typical Amy fashion. As I have said before, I love my jeans. I love soft comfy sweaters, fun jewelry and you will more often in warmer months see me in a sneaker type of shoe rather than a sandal. I have also like vests for as long as I can remember.

We took these pictures in my daughter’s garage. Isn’t that amazing? It looks like we are in some big studio somewhere. She likes to play with her cameras, backdrops and lighting, just like I like to play with clothes, so we get along pretty good. Ha, ha.

My light pink sweater is A New Day brand from Target, but I found it at a Goodwill store. For whatever reason the fashion gurus seem to think there is need to focus on drawstrings as a trend for this spring. I would have never thought to focus on that sort of a detail, but when I saw that it was on the list and I came upon this sweater thrifting, I grabbed it. Not only does it fit the drawstring detail, but it is soft and extremely comfortable. Plus it is the perfect weight for spring.

My olive green vest is a clearance purchase from Kohl’s and is Mudd brand. I styled this on the blog last spring when the trend was utility dressing. You can see that post here. A vest is a great way to add a layer of warmth, but not the excessive layers of sweaters or jackets. Spring can be a tricky time to dress with temperatures fluctuating more than 30 degrees or more on any given day. This utility vest works great for just that purpose and I like the way the pink and olive compliment each other.

Chunky jewelry is fashionable right now, especially large link chains and bright colors. This wood and chain necklace was a Christmas gift from my older daughter a few years ago and the leaf necklace was gifted to me from Happiness Boutique from fall of 2018. You can see that post here.

It seems that fringe is still hanging around, which is fine with me. I love this burgundy fringe bag and don’t get to show it off nearly enough.

These Puma sneakers were thrifted. I don’t know why I feel that my shoes have to match something in my outfit. They really don’t need to and many times my shoes don’t match anything, but once in a while, it is fun to play the matchy game.

Spring Trends 2020 - Maxi Dresses, Psychedelic Prints and Vests

If you have been following along as I look at the Spring 2020 Trends, then you are well aware this year’s trends are full of patterns and diversity. If your style is classic, you’ll find pinstriped suiting and button up shirts; if you prefer color, you’ll be amused with abstract florals and tropical prints; if boho vibe is your thing then today’s post is for you. When I think of boho style, I think of 60’s and 70’s inspired prints, fringe and maxi dresses. While today’s outfit has no fringe, it definitely calls to one’s inner hippy.

I got this flower power maxi dress last year on the clearance racks at Meijer. I was attracted to the large flowers, the rusty orange colored background and the crochet overlay on the bodice. The dress has spaghetti straps, but since it is still cold out, I decided to layer a long sleeve tee underneath.

I purchased this striped long sleeve tee just after Christmas at Maurice’s. I thought the navy stripe worked well with the blue in the dress and the rusty color is similar enough to the rust of the dress to make a fun print mix.

I’ve styled this denim vest from Christopher and Banks on the blog before many times. It is a workhorse in my wardrobe and is appropriate for all seasons. See how I styled it for spring, summer, fall and winter by clicking on the seasons.

A couple of simple jewelry items are enough to make a statement without being overdone.

You’ve seen this Simply Vera, Vera Wang bag on the blog before. I’m thinking maybe a cloth bag or something like my fringe bag would have been a better choice. I almost feel like this bag was out of place. I think it looks nice with the colors involved, but doesn’t really fit the vibe of the outfit as a whole. I feel the same way about my boots.

These Baretraps boot from DSW first made their appearance on the blog last fall. You can see that post here. I love having a variety of boots and these with their slouchy fronts, spat-type appearance and wood stacked heels are just plain fun. However, I don’t think they were the best choice for this outfit. Maybe a pair of my suede ankle boots or even some sneakers would have been a better choice. What do you think?

At the last minute I grabbed a scarf to wear as a type of head band. My daughter said I looked like Frankie from Grace and Frankie. Which of course made me laugh. Lily Tomlin is a great actress and comedian.

Spring Trends 2020 - Color Play - Neon

When playing with color I have found the biggest obstacle to overcome is the fear that something won’t go together; that it might look silly or clownish if I have too many colors boldly blasting their way down the street. Obviously, right now, it really doesn’t matter what we are wearing because most of us aren’t going anywhere. I still like to get up, shower, put on make up, do my hair and at least put on a pair of jeans and a top and sweater or sweatshirt. A few days I have even put on jewelry, just because I could. It really doesn’t matter if anyone else sees us. It comes down to what makes you feel happier and more comfortable during this difficult time.

Since neon is once again trending on the runways this spring and summer, I decided to look to Pinterest for some inspiration. As most of you know, when you want to find something on Pinterest you just go to the website and search. I put in neon outfits and got all sorts of ideas, some of which were definitely way outside my style zone. Since I couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for, I made up my own outfit. This is what I came up with.

This outfit would be perfectly acceptable at most work establishments and certainly helps to brighten up a drab, gloomy day. These bright red thrifted Faded Glory pants made their blog debut a few weeks ago in last months Color Play post.

This pale neon yellow short sleeve v-neck sweater was a Gap thrift find a few years ago. It is a very comfortable piece and I purposely chose the oversized look. As I told you last week, I have been getting into more oversized pieces. They are comfortable and if chosen carefully don’t add the illusion of extra pounds, but actually hide some of the more prominent bulges. Ha, ha.

My pale neon green jacket is a thrifted Christopher and Banks piece. The 3/4 length sleeves make it a great piece for spring and even for summer, when you need a little something extra for overly air conditioned offices and restaurants.

I thought the addition of this scarf was the perfect way to pull the pieces together. You could think of the this outfit as a type of color blocking, where you wear two or three plain colors next to each other. The addition of a printed scarf and bag add a touch of visual interest.

I have had this large tote bag for a long time. I don’t even remember where I got it, although I think it may have been something JC Penney’s carried in their luggage department a number of years ago and they were phasing it out. I believe I got it quite cheap. It is very roomy and easily fits my computer bag, notebooks and other writing necessities. Now that I think about it, I need to switch over to this bag from my buffalo check tote that I am currently using.

I threw on a few neon orange bracelets, just for fun.

Once again, I am featuring loafers, as they are trending right now. These are a thrifted pair of Nine West brand. Kohl’s started carrying Nine West brand clothing and shoes last fall, so I was pleasantly surprised when I pulled these out and realized they were that brand. I’m trendy and didn’t even know it. Ha, ha. I’ll include a few shopping links at the end if you are interested in adding a cute pair of loafers to your shoe collection.

Spring Trends 2020 - Sheer Top and Tiered Skirt

Two more trends that were seen on the runways this spring were tiers and sheer. I can easily buy into the tiered idea, as you will see in today’s post. In my opinion a tiered skirt is a fun, festive way to wear a skirt. Tiers just seem to say party ready, in the same way a pencil skirt seems more down to business.

The sheer trend I have a bit of a problem with, but I decided to style it for you to show you there is a modest way to be trending and wear something sheer without showing off your pasties (and no, I am not talking about the Northern Michigan deliciousness of meat and pastry). Ha, ha.

With our newsfeeds filled with the latest stats on the COVID-19 situation, I thought it would be appropriate to give you a much needed laugh right away, thus my silly picture above.

This thrifted tiered green skirt is Old Navy brand. This skirt is a little long for a midi skirt, but a little short for a maxi skirt. I styled this before on the blog, for my Christmas series. You can see that post here. If you have been with my blog for a while, then you know, I am a fan of tiered skirts. You can see a brown one, a black one, a blue ombre one and a multi-print one from previous posts. While the runways showed other tiered clothing like tops and pants, I prefer to stick to the skirt. I like the prairie or boho vibe that a tiered skirt brings to an outfit. This skirt is lined, making a slip unnecessary. I do like that in a skirt like this.

This sheer, floral Kensie top was a past purchase from Macy’s. I fell in love with the floral pattern and the pretty detailed lace insert on the sleeves. When I saw this trend on the runways, it was typically worn with little or nothing underneath. I know there are plenty of women who will wear something like this with a lacy black bra or bralette underneath and that is out of my comfort zone. However, to wear something sheer without anything underneath is just a statement of poor judgment and poor taste. What is wrong with leaving something to the imagination? Why is it women feel the need to bare all? To me it just takes something that God made to be sacred and beautiful and makes it common place and ordinary.

I paired my sheer piece with a black cami and I really wish I would have worn a black bra as well, but I wasn’t really thinking that far ahead. Ha, ha. I guess I also feel that the less you wear under a sheer piece, the less people are going to notice the clothing and the more they are going to be obsessing either over your pretty bra or over your boobs. That’s just my opinion and I’ll save the sermon on modesty for another time.

Since loafers are trending again, I thought my thrifted, black ANA loafer heels a good choice for this look.

I kept my jewelry simple, with a amber colored tear drop necklace and a crafted bead bracelet that I picked up last summer at an outdoor art show.

My Vera Wang tote bag was a clearance purchase from Kohl’s from a number of years ago. Once again, large tote bags are in, so I have been able to pull out the ones I have hung onto over the years. I love the floral pattern on this piece and thought it went well with the flowers in the top.

The wide thrifted black belt was an after thought, as the skirt has a simple elastic waist. I felt the belt gave it a more polished look.

I couldn’t leave you without a twirl! Ha, ha.
